What does this curious statement by dealer mean?

I'm in the market for new car and have heart set on Genesis. I've been following the threads here about some concern over whether Hyundai is really supporting the marketing and selling of these vehicles. I'm a little concerned about resale value b/c in the area where I live, there are literally none of these cars on the road. [part of its appeal for me actually]. The local dealer keeps two or three in stock and just doesn't seem motivated to sell them.

I emailed a dealer in a town 20 miles away and got this curious reply:

"Thank you for your inquiry on the 2010 Genesis Sedan. The Genesis is a limited production vehicle and Hyundai does not offer rebates on them. You may have noticed during your shopping and research that many dealer charge above MSRP for them and do not have any trouble finding people to pay that for the vehicle. The Genesis competes very well with other premium brands such as the Mercedes and BMW and doesn't cost anywhere as much as those vehicles. If you are interested in purchasing this vehicle I will take $1,000 off the price in an effort to earn your business."

The price issue is not the interesting part -- it is where the dealer calls the Genesis a "limited production vehicle." Have you ever heard it called this and what does it mean? I'm concerned this is just dealer's way of trying to put a positive spin on perhaps Hyundai cutting back on production and not really trying to preserve the model for the future?

That "market value" pricing crap is just that, crap. When I was negotiating for mine, and the salesman kicked off at that price, some two grand higher than sticker, I told him he was crazy, and if that was how they were going to start off, I was out the door. He also gave me the "I'm on your side" BS and almost every other cliched tactic in the book. Unfortunately for a lot of folks, it's the cost of doing business with a car manufacturer that has, for most of its life in the US, been targeting their business to a different demographic than they hope to capture with the Genesis. Most people on this site have ended up somewhere near invoice, give or take, with some substantially under if purchasing an '09. As far as the limited production claim, that's BS too. They are simply trying to create a demand over supply issue in your mind. If they haven't sold many, which depending on your location may be true, they will not allocate valuable capital to stocking many in their inventory. You may have to wait a little while to get your first choice of color/interior etc., but don't believe the crap they are selling. Good luck.

I believe you are being fed crap as well. I purchased my 09 in September for 36.4K Tech Package with 18 miles on it(color, options, everything I wanted). That is below "invoice" I believe. They started with "the car sells for sticker" approach with me. I called just about every dealer in Florida. They will come down if they know you are shopping at other dealerships. You have to tell them things like "this dealer will give it to me for this price" and they'll work with you if they want to make a sell and they do. I had them fighting against each other to make a sell and when I got to the price I wanted I stopped trying. I almost ended up driving 100 miles to a dealer that wanted to make a sell but one of my local dealers matched his price so I decided to call it quits. I might have been able to get it a little lower, but I didn't want to take a chance on not getting the one I really wanted. This process will take some time as they know that once people have the bug they just want it. You have to be willing to take up to a month to get it. I caved at just a little over two weeks of negotiating.

Good luck in your purchasing experience.

The reason that car salespersons say crap like that, is some percentage of the population will fall for it and pay what they are asking. It may be a small percentage, but even a small percentage makes it worthwhile for them. This is the way car salespersons have done business for billions of years.

Mr. Genesis is correct. I'm not sure whether this is your first car purchase, but the thing you need to remember is YOU hold all the cards, not them. Walking out is sometimes the best thing to do. I visited the dealer four separate times during negotiations. Each time, the price got a little lower. One time as I was leaving, I got the old "I'll do it for this if we sign now." Keep a sense of humor about it so that you don't piss off the manager. It's possible to have a good spirited negotiation without it deteriorating into hurt feelings. The last time I walked out, I was told "there is no way I'll write the deal for that. I'll lose too much money. I'd rather sell it to someone else." My cell phone rang before I even got home. We split the difference. I got a great deal and they sold the car, win-win.

Every vehicle is technically a "limited production vehicle" - they won't be built forever :p There are states that have rebates available. I would also advise you to utilize online car buying, such as American Express' program, Overstock, USAA - and to find your local hassle-free dealership. Ask specifically if the valued owner coupon / competitive coupon / leasing rebate is available.

Good luck!

First time posting here. Couldn't agree more.

OP, that "limited production", "sell for MSRP" is a total crap.
If you look up ebay, there's a dealer in Kansas selling brand new 2010 4.6 + Tech pkg for $38,xxx and I'm sure they'll go a lil lower than that.
I was offered $36400 plus TTL for an '09 4.6/tech back in December.
I'm sure you can go lower than that for a leftover '09s.

Good luck!

Try and join Hyundai's Think tank. If accepted you can buy your Genesis at dealer invoice less 3% and less advertising fees. A 2010 Genesis Sedan 4.6 with a tech package will cost you approximately $38,450 (plus destination charge, title and taxes). No haggling over price and at a great price. Go to hyundaithinktank.com.

Ben,

Where did you buy your Genesis? I bought mine in January 2009 at Orlando Hyundai. At that time, (Jan. 09) the only dealers in the area with a V8 Tech in a color I wanted, were Orlando, Jenkins in Leesburg and Universal. (Don't know about Bob Dance as I refuse to buy anything from them). Universal would not deal, and Jenkins would not come down from his $5000 "Bump-Up" sticker. Although Orlando sales department was not much better, they quoted me a price $2000 below sticker, however while dealing with them, and knowing what the value of my trade was, they offered me less than my trade was worth, so in reality, I got it for $1000 below sticker. Great salesperson, whom I often visit, but his sales managers tried every trick in the book to get more money out of me, and even after we made the deal, the F&I guy tried every trick in the book to again, get even more out of me. (I hate F&I guys).

I always take it to Orlando Hyundai for Service, as their Service and Parts Departments are great.

Bob,

I went to every dealership in Orlando. Bob Dance's sales people were a joke. I went there to look at the sedan and left as I would never buy a car on the first visit anyway. Well, they told me they would call me the next day and they never did. I never bothered to call back. They never did call me at all. They must be raking in the cash to show so little interest. Anyway, I ended up buying it at Universal Hyundai. None of the other dealerships actually had the one I wanted in terms of color and options (I didn't tell them that of course). I did find one in New Port Richie and they were very much willing to work on the price(small town I guess). I put them up against each other with pricing and finally got Universal to match them. I really think I could have gone down between $500-1K more but it would have taken another couple of weeks to get that much more with the already good price. I think the price was reasonable for that month. I think it was Sept. 10th when I bought it.

For service I've been to Universal, Holler and Orlando Hyundai. Universal ticked me when the Service Advisor said to me "What do you want me to do about it," with regards to my high oil level. I though that they may want to look into it or offer to change my oil to see if they overfilled it at the factory since it was a factory filled and he agreed it was over filled. Holler was okay when I went in for an oil change. They were okay with me going into their service area to watch the service tech change the oil. I told him about the high oil problem and brought in all the documentation. The service advisor didn't really show an interest in the matter. He did document on my service papers that they had confirmed it filled at 4.5 qts. I also took my car into Orlando Hyundai. They young service advisor was very nice but also didn't show much interest in the high oil level problem. They only put in 5 qts though I gave them 10 qts. They never opened the other 5 qt jug. Anyway, based on your comments I may want to go there again and speak to the service technician as you do to see what he has to say.

Sound like you got a good deal on your Genny considering you bought it in January of 09 when they were very new to the market.

When I leased my car, I negotiated the sale price through www.autobrag.com. I swear this is the best auto negotiation site , I have used. In my short car buying life history, I have bought a Honda OdysseyEXL with Navigation for 3K below invoice( Jan 2007, 07 model), a Lexus RX350 $950 below invoice( Feb 2008, 08 model). Igot my V6 Premium Plus with IPOD cable, caro tray, for $30.133 sale price. This was the only car in Atlanta with my color9Black with cashmere) and option, but negoatiated hard with the delaer. Try autobrag, and you will never be more happy. The website never ask for any phone numbers, so all deals were made through e-mail.

If you can find a "participating" dealer.

Bob/Ben: I am also in Orlando. I had the benefit of buying recently (12/09), after "gouge fever" abated.

We live in Hunters Creek, near Universal Nissan/Hyundai, but have grown very unhappy with them over the last 15 years of owning Nissans. My internet research informed me that Red Hoagland Hyundai in Winter Haven had the car I wanted in inventory (2010 white pearl/cashmere 3.8 w/PremNav) and that that dealership is highly regarded by its customers. Tho it is 35 miles south of my location, we bought there.

Had a great, no-pressure purchasing experience and great service dealings since. Our salesman, Shawn Hayes, was as knowledgeable and enjoyable to deal with as any car salesman I have even met. They started to negotiate at $500 under invoice, but I promptly informed them of my HAPP price thru the Think Tank, which brought us in at $4350 under sticker.

I recommend them most highly if anyone in Central Florida wants a Hyundai.

the dealers may think you are stupid. ;)
But they didn't know you are armed with this great forum. Enjoy hunting... sometime, driving off the new car from the dealer's lot is as much fun as hunting them.
