  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What surprises have you "found" in your car...

Here's a weird one. My car sat idle for an hour and a half one night this week - the gas mileage went from 19 to about 10, in that time.

When I turned the car off, then on again, the mpg reset, as it does when I put gas in it. No idea if this is a "feature" (as in, "this mpg is not real, let's reset it for you, sir") or just a bug.

(Shrugs shoulders)

I have a bad neck, so tilt adjustable headrests are desirable for me. Most
new cars no longer have a tilt feature due to the NHTSA"s insistence that
all cars now have active head restraints. My 2003 BMW 525i was built before
the government edict, and had the right type of tilting feature for me. Since
I know most cars no longer have this type of headrest, I didn't bother to
check for it when purchasing my Genesis. The next day after the purchase
I discovered that the Genesisi still has this feature, and was surprised in a
very good way!

2012 Champagne Metallic Hyundai Genesis 3.8 with premium package
1993 Bentley Brooklands Touring Sedan, without Bentley premium package
1956 Packard 400 Hardtop that is a premium package to maintain
2011 Kia Optima Hybrid (wife's car.)

Good! My dad bought the new Azera 2012 and I also bought a 2012 Kia Optima SX. Both cars I feel have the headrests WAY too far forward and I just can't seem to get comfortable because of this. Feel like my head if being forced forward. May dad mentioned the same thing. maybe it's something to get used to??

My Genesis Coupe was like this. If my wife was driving, shouldn't couldn't have her hair in a pony-tail because of the headrest. Driving home from work, it would rub the back of my head and I would have a headache before I got home.

When buying the sedan, I mentioned this to the sales guy. He says, "just remove the headrest".

If you have the hvac off, and all the windows and sunroof closed, there is little to no air movement, but as soon as you open a window a little bit or open the sunroof the hvac system let's fresh air in from outside, not moving the air with the fan, just letting it in... Easier to notice when on the highway, and when its a bit cooler out

Agreed. Its like someone having a window open in the house and then opened the door to the backyard - air flow! Very cool.

What surprises have I found?

Let's see: There was a used band-aid on the back seat yesterday, and I've picked up occasional unidentifiable food remnants. Other than that, no surprises in terms of functionality that haven't been covered here.

The Lexicon stereo has made me much less efficient at work. Rather than making phone calls, I find I just want to listen to the sweet sounds from the stereo and decompress. I am not an audiophile, but the sound from the Lexicon is incredible. I've never experienced anything like it.

What he said

(Do this while you're parked, not while you're driving.)

Try this with the base stereo. On an XM channel, turn up the sound to at least halfway. Push and hold in the "info" button. Now what do you do?

The battery in the trunk!!!

This is fairly common. My BMW and Mercedes have their battery in the trunk , it helps provide better weight distribution.

It's potentially safer when jump starting, because there are no battery acid gases under the hood.

Yes. I had read the NY Times review of the car before buying. It said "The Lexicon 17-speaker sound system is, in my opinion, one of the best factory-installed units you can buy at any price." Other reviews were even more glowing. Still, the 17-speaker Lexicon surprised me.

Flip the headrest around.

Finally found one (apologies if this was already posted - I don't have time to read the entire thread):

Walking to my car in the parking deck at work, I sometimes hit the unlock button from relatively far away if I'm not sure where I parked. A couple of times, the car re-locked itself before I got there. I assumed this was a feature, not a bug, but wasn't sure until I read this in the manual:

After depressing this button, the doors (and trunk) will be locked automatically unless you open any door within 30 seconds.

I recently "discovered" that - if the car is unlocked - the trunk can be opened using the button above the rear license plate without keyfob being present. I had assumed that the button would work only if you have your keyfob.

I had read all the "surprises" about a day after i got the car, so i didn't think i had anything new to contribute...
I friend of mine who's 6'5" was looking at the car, and said if he fits in the back seat he will like it, then he tells me "Hey" look its got detents for your knee's on the backs of the front seats!!

I would like to see a light under the hood, and with all the heated stuff the car has, i was surprised that it didn't have a heated steering wheel...
