  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

is the trim around the windows stainless or chrome? and whats the best way of polishing it? Just did a full detail on Genny and my Zymol had no effect on the hairline etchings/swirls in the window trim. A little nervous to use a metal polish until I find out what its made of, theres no mention anywhere that I was able to find.

Thanks, Staz in Myrtle Beach, SC!

My detailer stated that the "chrome" trim around the windows is actually stainless steel.

Rspec is stainless and so may the rest of the 2013 lineup but not sure. Prior years are chrome.

That chrome is actually stainless steel 2009-2012. Turns the metal polish black indicating SS.

Try a magnet-------it it doesn't stick, it's a good grade of stainless. If it does stick, it is either steel or a poorer grade of stainless.

Could br however my 2010 4.6 was high gloss as in chrome colour. Never have seen SS high gloss. The Rspec however is definitely SS just by the colour.

EDIT. Just tried the magnet and it sticks like it was regular metal on the so called SS imitation.

Bottom line the older models were chrome finished and the newer ones are metal with a brushed SS finish.

This is a poor statement. 400 series is a great grade of stainless (serves a different purpose than 300 series) and 400 series is ferrous. 300 series is non ferrous and is mainly what is used for aesthetics.

If the magnet sticks...like it is said to. Then you're probably dealing with some form of carbon steel...odd honestly.

The 400 series stainless is cheaper and not as corrosion resistant as 300 series--------and that is a correct statement!!!

The strength of 304 SS is higher than some (most?) of the 400 series.

This is irrelevant, however, as I doubt any auto trim is SS these days-----it's just too expensive. And if it were, the scrappers would be tearing off the cars.

Scrappers think it's chrome.:D

So does anyone know for sure? My 09 4.6 has a TON on scratches on the trunk trim. What should I use to remove them? I tried 3M rubbing compound but it didn't make a difference at all.

Uranium

Yes yes... Uranium... you can find some on Uranus? :D:D
