First Generation Wheel coating coming off

Anyone else experience the silver coating peeling off the black wheels?
I thought the wheels were silver but are indeed, black with a coating. Seems cheap to me. I wash the car myself, only had it at a car wash once and dealer wash twice. I thought I had run through some black tar and went to clean them off and found they were actually peeling.

I have never had the problem and have owned my 4.6 for 6 years , however, I live in an area where we don't have much snow or salt air from the ocean. Also, after washing my wheels I use a spray wax on them. Road chemicals in snow belt states or coastal areas may produce more problems with the peeling, I'm not sure. But I do know that some wheel cleaning chemicals for aluminum or alloy wheels will damage or remove the painted finish. Many wheels on new cars now are painted.

Your wheels are painted alloy with a clear coat. As such, they should be treated like any painted surface on your car, with a mild detergent and good quality synthetic polymer wax. They should not be treated with any kind of commercial wheel cleaner, which are designed for polished alloy wheels (not painted alloy) and are too harsh for a painted surface.

Other people have experienced the same paint peeling as you have, but many who have cared for their wheels properly have not had any trouble.
