  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When did the 4.6 get the power bump? Considering purchasing a 2010

The dealership group that I work for got a 2010 Genesis 4.6 with 58k miles as a trade-in that I can get a massive employee discount on. I'm considering trading in my Mazda 3 for it so that I can have a more comfortable car for college.

I know the V8 got a power bump at some point, but I can't find a source as to when. Wikipedia says that it happened midway through MY2010, but the cited source is a press release about the Equus. Carfax says that the one I'm looking at was built in June 2010.

Also, are there any common issues that I should know about or look for before I buy?

Thanks in advance

Seems strange that they would make a change to the engine rating in the middle of a model year, because I presume they would have to retest the gas mileage with the EPA. Maybe they meant in the middle of calendar year 2010 a change was made starting with model year 2011.

There was a power bump in model year 2012 when the Tau 5.0 GDI engine was released to replace the 4.6. But the engine was delayed, so some early 2012 V8's got the 4.6 EFI engine.

AFAIK the power bump from 375 to 385 hp happened in the 2011 model year like Mark said.

As far as what to watch out for... the 2009-2010 tech trims had some chronic problems with power seat and power tilt steering motor limit switches (would fail and get stuck, requiring ~$400 replacement mostly labor), as well as radio-head-unit failures (~$3k).

I believe Hyundai had sorted out the early Tau metallurgy problems with the valve springs by 2010... but I'm not 100%.

The part number for the valve springs changed on the late 2010 engines(which I believe weren't actually put into any 2010's, they started in the 2011's). This is the same time they gave it the 10 HP bump on the rating. I have not done deep research to confirm this, but as far as I know, the only physical changes from the 2010 to 2011 4.6L engine were the fexplate/starter and valve springs. Neither would create a horsepower bump, so if their rating increase from 375 to 385 is legitimate and not just fudging with numbers, it's probably in tuning and nothing else. I don't expect my 2009 to have more power now that I've dropped in a 2011 engine.

With the common failures not related to the engine, *knock on wood* the only thing I've experienced was that the CD/DVD drive doesn't function on my car. It hasn't since I bought it 2 years ago. I run my music off USB so it never matted, but if you don't want to take your chance on a used part from a salvage yard, it's an $800 part new. So...I haven't bothered lol.
