If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Which home charger/EVSE should I get?

Hello all -

We're scheduled to pick up our GV60 Performance tomorrow, and so need a home charging solution. We already own a Tesla and have a NEMA 14-50 socket in the garage, so we just need to pick up an appropriate box for the GV60. I see many brands, from Electrify America, to Mustart to Amproad to Autel, to JuiceBox, to Emporia to Clipper Creek...

A friend bought the Electrify America for his iD4 - seems happy with it, but it's pricey, and I'm not sure I see its advantages over some of the others..

In theory, I could use the Tesla mobile charger that I got with the car with an adapter, HOWEVER, the cable isn't long enough to reach the parking spot in the garage for the GV60, and no, I'm not gonna just swap parking spots with the wife whenever she needs to charge...;)

Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Thanks!

Saw that one too - looks nice enough.

Is there any benefit to a “smart/Wi-Fi” charger given the GV60’s inherent scheduled charging capabilities?

Personally I don’t ever use
the wifi on my Grizzl-e

Currently here in BC, BC Hydro has a deal on with ChargePoint & JuiceBox owners. If you are connected to the internet & will permit throttling, they will give you $35 over three months. That being said, we had almost nothing for internet for the last two weeks & the EVSE kept shutting off. Was a royal pain in the ass. I would have preferred a dumb unit but couldn’t get the combination I wanted.

I have a charge point home flex and I regret not getting a dumb grizzl-e.

The scheduling is more accurate through the car (since it knows soc), and the chargepoint removed the ability to change charging current easily (so not really flex?).

One time my wifi went down and the charger had a fit (it worked eventually but it took a few plug in retries).

Other than the metrics on charging cost, which was cute for the first month, I haven't used any smart features.

I have a Charge Point Home Flex. It's been working great. No regrets so far.

I have a Juicebox 40 and quite like it. I like the control a Wi-Fi unit provides - I can turn charging in and off by the minute remotely, throttle charging, and if/when a second EV arrives, can share load between the two chargers.
I also love data and spreadsheets, so, love that I can download charging details from the unit for analysis.

It also depends whether your utility company has the discounted rate program for EV-s. In that case, they can extend it to you if you have a certain "smart" charger- i.e Juicebox and Charge Point (I think) in NJ.

I have a question for you . I have a Juicebox 48. I like it for the analytics as well, just one annoying thing. I find if I plug the car in for the evening it charges it up fine but after the charge session is done the EVSE won't re engage (unless you you physically remove the j1772 and replug it into the car) when the car calls for preconditioning in the morning. Is there a setting I am missing?

I've never had such an issue occur. Do you have any smart charging schedule set that could be interfering? Just got through each of the selectable settings and see if something is engaged that you may not want to be.
There is a setting where you indicate the total kWh capacity of the battery. I believe it's just meant to try to show what percentage you've charged, but I wonder if it might be stopping at some pre-determined amount?

I have the Autel, very happy with it and the App…
It’s also really easy to reduce the charge current if you want to give your battery inverted and charge port a break. @48A the whole 25 feet of wire gets warm to the touch! 😳

That's probably one of the appreciable differences vs Enel x Juicebox, the wiring is relatively massive in diameter and does not get warm even at the full 48 amps. The major drawback to the thicker wiring/insulation is its poor flexibility at sub zero temperatures.

I used my thermal camera to check temps before putting the cover back on the Autel… this is after maybe 2 minutes…

Autel tucked in behind too much junk.. zThank heavens for the remote holster.

Yeah its weird, after a successful charge the car reports the EVSE is disconnected even though it physically is still attached. Its clearly a software thing. I went through all the settings again on the web based UI instead of the app, seems a little easier to navigate. My original time of use schedule on the EVSE was off but this time I scheduled it on for 23 h 59 minutes per day and added minimal (SOC ) to 77.4 kWh one of these changes seemed to get the EVSE to wake up to the car's request to charge again without physically re plugging it in again.

Well It worked at least once far, but it didn't want to repeat. Honestly, I got admit their software is a bit flakey at times that or I may just have a flakey unit. As much as I enjoy the faster charge and analytics with the Juicebox I have started to resort to using my old 32 amp dumb EVSE periodically as I was really starting to enjoy getting into both a charged up and scheduled preheated car in the morning. As I am sure you may appreciate the nice thing about the scheduled preheat is that its 30 minute sessions instead of the 10-15 minutes via the app or remote climate preheat. I imagine you could superimpose both preheat schedules on top of each other and get an hour of preheating if you really wanted. I just find -20C or colder weather 10-15 minutes of preheating is barely enough.

I find 15 minutes fine - even at -20C, but the absence of a warm seat is a huge oversight, IMO.

Picked up the car yesterday - love it!

Many thanks to all for the comments and charger suggestions. After further review, the cable on my Tesla charger DOES reach the GV60’s charging port, so I just bought a Lectron Tesla-J1772 adapter and we’re good to go.

We’re in a very temperate climate and don’t have TOU electric rates so there’s not much benefit to a “smart” charger for us.

Next question (maybe for a different thread) is do we chance taking the GV60 on a road trip over New Year’s weekend, given the potential Electrify America sh*t show, or do we do the safe (but less comfortable and quiet) thing and take the Tesla?

Good luck with the Lectron adapter. I bought one soon after getting my car, and returned it soon after and bought a Teslatap. The Lectron does not work well.

Did you have this one?:
Reviews were good overall for this “revised” version…

That appears to be the same unit I had. Had to regularly replace power cycle the car several times to get it to work. The unit does not work with e-GMP cars.
Search the forum for “Lectron”, I posted details.
