  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Windshield cracked

On Saturday, along a 2 lane highway, an oncoming pickup truck picked up a rock [or pebble] and hit our windshield. The actual point of impact is on lower side of the driver, however, the crack line has now extended to about a foot and even though not in the direct line of vision, is an annoyance.

I called up Geico right away and started the process of having it replaced. They are sending me to Safelite Autoglass to get it replaced. Unrelated, the Geico process took less than 10 minutes.

Upon thinking more and more about it, I thought it would be better to go directly to a Hyundai shop for the work. I called up three different dealerships and all of them contract this type of work out to their own local Safelites.

That being the case, I'm wondering if anyone has had any good/bad experiences with windshield replacements. Eons ago, my father had a windshield replaced which leaked until fixed again, but I'm hoping that technologies and techniques have evolved since then.

Also, any words of wisdom on what I should look for or ask for would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jay

The capabilities and quality today is not like years past. OEM quality replacement are pretty solid these days from the major vendors.

That totally sucks.

Safelite did my 2012 about a year ago, and it has had no issues. I insisted on OE glass and was willing to pay extra for it. However, I did not have to pay. Sometimes, there is no aftermarket option, if the car is low production or there are number of different windshield configuration options that make aftermarket manufacture less viable.

Be sure to double-confirm your car's option packages so they bring the right glass. The windshield may have provisions for rain sensing wipers and lane departure system sensors, depending on the car's trim level.

We had a similar experience a couple of months ago but took it immediately to a glass shop and they repaired it and there is just a slight "pit" where the rock hit. If one didn't know it was there they wouldn't see it. It is important to get it looked at immediately before the crack extends. Once that happens the windshield will have to be replaced.

Cost was $35 in our case.

Our new 2015 had a run in with some 18-wheeler tread kicked up by another truck late one evening. It hit the front end as well as dinging the windshield. Next morning that windshield impact was about 8" long. As we had significant front end damage, the body shop replaced the windshield with an OEM one along with the whole front bumper and grill. We were without our car for two weeks while they sourced parts.

I took my BMW to Safelite and had to go back 2 more times ,the last time I went to a different Safelite because the first people couldn't get it right ,
the windshield wasn't sitting right and it sounded like the windows were opened ,that's how bad it was installed ,still not like factory ,the car was very quiet before install

My wife's Lexus IS windshield cracked a couple of months ago. Safelite came to the house, fixed it in the driveway.

Works perfectly, you wouldn't know it had been replaced.

this is why I got the glass coverage for mine. it was 599 and covers paintless dent repair, key fob replacement, glass chips, and road hazard on the tires.

heck, one windshield....or one keyfob, or one tire blown by nail and it paid for itself. plus its all done at the dealer.

Insist on OEM glass. Less chance of distortion.

Just an update [and thanks to all of you for your advice]:

Safelite ordered the OEM windshield via the local Hyundai dealership. They used the VIN to get the correct one. The price I saw on the invoice was about $2000.

Replaced in two hours and all looks and works well [wipers, lane assist, HUD].

Had consistent rain last Thursday and some lingering rain on Friday and the car was outdoors both days. No leaks.

My total cost = $0. But I'm sure Geico will find a way in the future to get some back.

I was just about to reply that the W/S's are VERY expensive. Be sure your glass is the sound deadening glass, and make sure it's heated. I cracked mine changing a wiper blade. Had one stuck, and when it finally let go, the arm slipped out of my hand. From now on, it'll have a blanket or someone else is going to change it.

Is the heated windshield a feature of the 2013 Rspec because I am pretty sure mine does not have that?

It'll never be the same. You'll hear wind into the cabin forever :/
