Just to give everyone a heads up. In case they’re not aware of it, because I was not. The windshield in my 18’ G90 caught a rock on a recent trip. (Common problem here in Arizona) I brought the car down to my local Safelite auto glass. I know the manager very well. While we were talking, he asked me if I had a camera in the mirror area of the windshield. I told him I wasn’t aware of one. I know there’s one on all four corners of the car. We went outside and he showed me a small triangle area front of the windshield that contains a camera. He advised me that the windshield could be replaced, however the camera would need to be recalibrated. He told me that Safelite auto glass has invested thousands of dollars into a Bosch recalibration machine. There should be no problem with them doing the job as they’ve done Hyundais and others. Time came to calibrate the car. They hooked up to the machine. They could not find the 2018 model G90 in the system. However the 2017 model Genesis showed up. So they attempted to calibrate it with those parameters. I was in the shop while they were attempting to do it. Everything was set perfectly. But the car would not recalibrate after multiple attempts.The manager got on the phone with Safelite national who handles this division of the company. He was quickly Informed that the 2018 parameters are different and that the current equipment was not able to reset the camera. They’re not sure when they will obtain the software update. So I need to bring the car into the dealership to have them re-calibrate it. I’m not sure if the dealer will cover that under its normal warrantee or if I am going to be out of pocket. I’ve been too busy to take it in. I’ll update you all soon.

On a sidenote, just to let you know, Safelite replaced it with a genuine Hyundai Genesis windshield the label is in the corner. In case you don’t have glass coverage on the car I would suggest getting it. Safelight’s bill to the insurance company was $2400.00. It would have been higher if they were able to calibrate the car. However, because they could not recalibrate they did not charge the insurance company for that.

It is not a warranty issue. They (or you) should collect from the insurance company I've not looked at windshield replacement but that is pricey. Most are less than half that, but it is a low volume unit.
 
Many insurance companies cover windshield replacement if it has a stone in the drivers visual field. They view it as a safety issue.

Your insurance company should cover the cost of calibration of the camera. I had
the same issue with my last car. I had to pay the dealer myself, then submit the bill
to the Insurance company.

I got my windshield replaced...chipped. No mention of a camera recalibration. 2017 G90. They did it in the parking lot at work. Car has no issues. Sounds a bit like a scam. The camera sits behind a windshield. What would need to be recalibrated? The whole point of the camera is that it figures out how far away things are and is constantly recalibrating. I assume it has auto focus. I just can’t see the camera or that whole console needing to be recalibrated if you clean the old seal properly and install it properly. It sits against the windshield at the proper angle nd is connected to the roof. You would really have screw the job up to have the angle of the glass be altered in such a way that the camera and what ever other tech is in the that module would not work properly.

I would love to hear a deeper explanation. I am not saying I am right, just color me skeptical.

I was extremely surprised they even had one in stock. The crack started in the upper corner of the passenger side a couple of millimeters from the exposed edge of the windshield. By the time I brought it in and had traveled all the way over to the driver side. I sure wish they would put trim piece at the top of the windshield instead of having the edge of the glass exposed. It may prevent things like this.

They also do exact measurements with lasers to make sure it’s in the proper location.

If you haven’t had your car recalibrated since they replace the windshield I would suggest you do it.

I can see where a degree or two off can really screw up the LKAS. 1 degree at 100 yards is a bit over 5 feet. I don't know how far the camera looks, but it could easily put you in the other lane if not mounted properly.

This road test for calibration should take 15 minutes.”

I wonder if there is a seal around the module or if it just rests against the windshield. I read if it is off a millimeter it can cause problems. I am still skeptical. Why would you make something that sensitive, that would obviously be impacted by 2 NFL players sitting in the rear or in the front. Someone decides to get different tires with different inflation from front to back. When you are traveling at a high rate of speed wouldn’t the wind push down on the front by a millimeter.

Would you suggest it just be slapped on any old way? There has to be a tolerance of some sort and a limit that affects it. If it is already facing up too far then the two football players will take out of range. I imagine some testing was done in the real world to see how much a passenger or air pressure changes things at distance.

If installed perpendicular and the car travels at speed, why would it be pushed down when the force is equal on the entire face? I cannot think of an explanation for that.

Everything has a specification and tolerance and usually for good reason.

No. I get there has to be a tolerance. But if it is not sealed to the windshield, and if you change the windshield properly, the module would not even move.

I am no expert obviously, but I don’t believe they are cutting a seal on the interior for the module. I am guessing a non-adhesive foam rubber gasket against the windshield. Cut the seal around the windshield on the exterior and use the big suction cups to pull it off the frame properly, and do the same in reverse and the module will not have moved any more than grabbing your sun glasses would make it move.

Just to be clear mine was repaired. Not sure if calibration occurred or not. If I was betting, I would say no and I don’t recall it being listed on the invoice.

Everything seems to be working the same as before...radar cruise control and emergency braking (not even sure that is behind the windshield) still working as before, interpreting speed limit signs still good to go, lane departure working properly and of course the rain sensor is working.

Your post is excellent and wished I knew what I didn’t know then so I could have ensured they did everything by the book.
 
I have had the windshield camera on 2 previous vehicles and was told it was for the automatic headlights? One had windshield replaced, technician said as long as it isnt unplugged there is no calibration needed after windshield replacement. Not really sure at this point.

Forgot about the Auto High Beam function. I cut and pasted from the Hyundai site. It only says “potentially moved”. Parsing that phrase leaves room for a careful technician to change a windshield carefully and not have to perform the calibration.

Peace of mind will demand the calibration knowing what we know. You don’t want to be the guy that drives under a semi’s trailer because the camera saw sky and failed to activate the emergency auto brake as you look for the dropped French fry.
 
I had the windshield replaced on my G90 last month. Caught a rock while driving on I-17 in Phoenix. Lots of dump trucks traveling around the city carrying landscape rock (typically 1/2 " decomposed granite) because our residences utilize this as front yard cover instead of lawns to conserve water. Sometimes these trucks leak a few rocks, making travel on our city freeways a bit hazardous for windshields.

I have AAA insurance and the adjuster complained about having to buy an OEM windshield for $2330. No aftermarket windshields were available. Arizona law requires the insurance company cover the replacement if the chip or crack is in the driver's line-of-sight. I don't know about regulations on deductibles - my policy has $0 deductible for windshield replacement - but I did learn that AZ law prevents the insurance company from raising your premiums due to a windshield claim.

I told my Service Valet about the windshield replacement and he included a calibration check along with my car's oil change and tire rotation. No charge to me, but I think there were no adjustments necessary.
