  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've been researching the genesis and the equus over the past few months and I have decided I will purchase one of the two. It will be a used model. I have a work truck i use during the week and need something else to keep the miles off of that and off of my wife's new car. I've been impressed with the reviews of hyundai's and projected reliability. I'll be paying cash so i didn't want to drop a ton into an equus... I think the car is awesome but it will be roughly 10K more for something i'm not driving all that often. I did find one with 1 owner, looks great minus some small curb rash on a front fender, no accidents and seems to have had every scheduled maintenance done with regular oil changes that would get close to my budget but it does have 80K miles. I've never purchased a vehicle with that many miles but I am considering. It's the ultimate package as well. my concerns lie with some of the more complex systems failing... air suspension - my wife's old GL450 cost an arm and a leg to fix....

thoughts?

I've been thinking about the two as well. If you need a lot of rear seat room I think the Equus is the way to go. If not, save the money and go with Genesis.

What do you think about it having 80K miles?

It is very difficult to offer advice, since you don't mention the model year, trim level, or how much the car would cost.

2011 ultimate equus I could get for around 19K

Are buying privately or from a dealer?

If privately I would suggest to have it inspected by Hyundai dealer/mechanic that is familiar with these cars.

Although both the Equus and the Genesis are generally reliable, I would also suggest to get an extended warranty for 3-5 years and whatever miles you may need.

Being the second owner you will have no warranty after the first five years / 60k miles.

They are expensive to repair outside the warranty period, as much as 13k for a new engine, 8k for a new transmission, 3.5k for the audio head unit, and so on and so forth...

Just my two cents...

clearly

anything is possible..especially for something that may have been abused
But if there are many incidences of any of those three things happening then perhaps the car itself should not be considered to purchase at all..no matter its warranty status

The car that the Equus copies...IMO...the last iteration of the Lexus LS, is an EXTREMELY reliable car. Even the units with stratospheric mileage
A used LS is about $12K more than an Equus of the same year and mileage

What you are suggesting..if those repairs that you mentioned have any regularity...is that the Lexus is worth the $12K just for the reliability factor alone

The Genesis and Equus are both fine cars. If you are looking for a used one, there are bargains galore. Especially on the Equus. Prices on a two or three year old Equus Ultimate is about the same as a Signature. The 13s are the last year with vibrating seats and refrigerators. They are not selling well, a lot go through a Hyundai auction as a used car just to get rid of them. Look at AutoTrader and CarsDirect at 2013 cars with low miles. Warranty remaining can be calculated on CarFax, usually included in ad. 2012s have had troubles, but 2013's seem relatively trouble free, and drive great. I got a 2013 Ultimate in 8/14, 12k miles $38k for $67k car, trouble free at current 48k miles. Gook luck!

agreed ...which is why even with the large discounts some have gotten on brand new models..$12-17K off sticker...the depreciation is steep
4 year old cars with 50K miles and still in factory warranty are bringing about 1/3 of their sticker price

I expect there will be another faster rate of depreciation as soon an the new body style Equus rolls out next year

The Kia K900 is another good buy on the used car spectrum
