If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I recently returned from a 1200 mile trip to Northern California and finally got around to washing my car.
To my disappointment, I have a number of small paint chips in the hood and one on the roof. In 9 years of Lexus ownership and 98000 miles, I never had any paint chips.
Is the paint process by Hyundai where they save some money? Has anyone else experienced paint chips?
Another question. Any recommendations on how to "paint" over the chips? Touch up paint from Hyundai? What about the clear coat??

thanks for your help.

We put about 36000 miles a year on our 1st car and about 15,000 on the 2nd. My experience has been that chips from rock come from trucks hitting very small loose gravel from road patch work. I have had it happen several times and its just random as to when you may be in the wrong place when near the rear of a truck.

Stone chips are unavoidable. Hyundai did not skimp on the paint. I have had stone chips in every car I own. As has my mother and father. Fact of life.

Clearshield is the only solution I know. However, when it gets old enough and beaten up by the same stones and gravel, it looks ugly too. Then pay more for a new Clearshield, but at least the paint is still intact.

Be aware that you can order touch up from Hyundai based on your VIN but even then it's not a perfect match. I have 7500 miles a a number of chips and scratches. I'd touch up only if you're anal about or if there is danger of it spreading. The paint seems to be of the same quality as Acura.

I bought my RSPEC with 12K miles on it. There were 3 or 4 paint chips on the hood and a couple on the sides. I called my dealer and they have a guy that comes in once a week. It took him about 3 minutes to fix all of them. After a wash, I can't find them even if I look hard. Maybe your dealer has one of these guys as well?

Just be grateful you only got stone chips, my roadtrip was shorter than yours and I got a stone chip/crack on my windshield from a semi that decided to sit in the passing lane, and start hitting the shoulder and rumble strips when I got close.
... And it has turned into a full fledged cracked windshield now.
I'd just get some touch up paint from hyundai, mention it at the dealer if you take your car there. From experience touch up paint has cost ($50 for BMW, but two seperate bottles, one base and one clearcoat, very nice) ($9 for subaru, not bad stuff) (audi... Free, lol, I asked the service manager and they gave me samples for both my body and roof colors in containers twice the size or most paint pens) so asking doesn't hurt, especially when you're already paying them for something else.

I bought a paint chip pen on ebay, about $15.
Made just for Hyundai colors.
It came from Korea, works very well.
The pen applicator works much better than the brush type.

Had the same thing last year and had to replace my windshield. I'm now very careful driving behind trucks, though there's only so much you can do. I have a few small paint chips on my Genesis, but have been wary about fixing them myself. I tried it on my last car and, even though the color match was good, the fix looked like a small blob of paint.

I think my Coupe chips way easier than either of my wife's vehicles. The Jeep Cherokee Sport has over 100,000 miles on it and it does have some chips in the paint. The Ford Fusion as just over 20,000 miles on it and I only know of a couple of chips I've seen when washing/waxing it.

The coupe is getting chips in some weird places - on the roof, on the fender above the front wheel, the middle of the hood, etc.

I do my best to stay well off the back of big trucks and I'm not in the habit of getting close to much of anything.

Maybe I'm just more critical of the paint because I like the car so much and plan on keeping it for a long time.
