The wife and I recently completed a round trip from Orange County, CA to Denver, CO over the course of 8 days. Overall we averaged about 27 mpg for the 2500 miles which is not to shabby considering all the 2 lane highways and mountain driving we did. The trip to Denver was mostly freeway with the exception of an excursion into Zion National Park.
Had one leg (which included Zion) between St. George, UT and Grand Junction, CO where we went 452 miles on a tank of gas with the distance to empty display suddenly going from 30+ miles to 0 miles. We gassed up only to discover there was still 2 gallons left in the tank. I knew we could have gone further!
The trip back home started with snow (chains never came out of the trunk) and 2 lane highways over numerous mountain passes;
Kenosha Pass 10,000’
Red Hill Pass 9,993’
Trout Creek Pass 9,346’
Monarch Pass 11, 312’
Cerro Summit 7,958’
Red Mountain Pass 11,018’
Molas Divide 10,910’
Economy thru this stretch was only about 22 mpg and was the worst we saw but it was the best scenery.
From Durango to Flagstaff via 4 Corners we did 28.2 mpg and that was on 2 lane highways where somehow the car exceeded the speed limit a tad once or twice to about 115 mph. Gotta look into how that happened.
Sure didn’t feel like we were going that fast. We probably would have gone for more if the speed alert system sitting in the passenger seat didn’t keep going off.
The best economy was between Flagstaff and Bullhead City which was mostly freeway with the cruise control set at 84 mph. Here we did a respectable 30 mpg.
The only gripe was the performance of the windshield wipers when the temps were in the 20's. They seemed to freeze up and not wipe very well. And yes I did have enough sense to put the right windshield washer fluid in before we hit the frigid temps.
Great car for road trips and we are both looking forward to another one soon.
