engine noise?

Hello, I'm new here and would appreciate some input from people owning a 2012 Gen 5.0 R. I was looking at a used 5.0 R at a dealers lot and was really intrigued on how well this car handles, acceleration, and comfort with absolute quietness. However, upon arriving back at the car lot , I put the car into park and popped the hood. This car sounded almost like my Ford F250
Super duty diesel at idle. The saleman told me that it was just injector noise. This particular car only showed 10,350 miles. Is this normal or should I shy away from this car ????

I think you are hearing the direct injection or GDI system which produces more noise than older type gasoline injection systems. My advice is to listen to a new 5.0 on the lot and compare.

I agree with Homeofstone.

The Genesis 5.0 R is a GDI (Gas direct injection) engine. The fuel pressure is somewhere around 2000 psi in order to inject it into the cylinder when the piston is at the top of its compression stroke.

Homeofstone’s suggestion to drive a new 5.0 R to compare engine noise is the way to go IMPO.

The GDI noise is normal, I'm told some cars and certain situations magnify it. My Rspec sounds very loud at idle when parked between two other vehicles...noise is just rebounding between vehicles. In traffic or on road , noise is non existent . The noise or "clatter" sound will always be there , but should not get much more aggressive over time. I'm at 17K and I don't even hear it except in parking lot as described above.

As others have said, it's totally normal for this sort of fuel injection. Check out this youtube video. At about 5:10 he does an engine tour and you can hear the signature GDI clattering sound.

Nice video. It should be noted that the 17 spk radio package does not stream Bluetooth audio. Also, I thought R Spec came with lighted door sills?

It does come with lighted door sills.

Another mistake in the video is his reference to a LDWS control on the steering wheel. He was actually referring to the adaptive cruise setting on the wheel. The LDWS switch is to the left of the steering wheel column.

I agree with homeofstone. I personally don't find mine to be noisy, and to hear the GDI injector noise being compared to any diesel sound is a real stretch for me.

The idea presented here is correct the injectors and the line pressure to them causes a lot of clicking noise. The fact is that most GDI engines and DDFI (diesel) engines use much higher than 2000 PSI, in fact many use almost 10 times that! The reason is that the injectors used open and close incredibly fast, and often the injection is talored to the particular engine and driving cycle using multiple injections per stroke. The most complex GDI engines will have as many as 5 fuel releases during 1 stroke. This injector "ring" is often caused by having steel lines from the pump to the injector. You can ignore this blather though and know that most of this noise is normal.
