Note re: Door/Trunk Locking

For those of you who've grown fond of locking your car via the little black button on the door handle, be advised that you're only locking the four doors, but not the trunk.

I haven't had a chance to look through the manual to see if the handle-based lock function is described that way, but I've verified it a couple of times on my car. I wouldn't be surprised if at least some owners assumed that locking the car via the handle would lock EVERYTHING, but it doesn't. So if you have anything of value in your trunk, be sure to use the button on the proximity key to lock all five "doors".

I just checked and found that if you pushed the button on the door and then checked the trunk with the key in your pocket the trunk will open but if you take the key and put it in the house and then check the trunk it will not open.

Ah hah! So, it's a function of the ol' proximity key, eh? Good catch, Richard. I'll try the same test just to be sure, but it sounds like I can go back to using the door button to lock the car (as long as I'm not rendered unconscious a few feet from the car...with the key still in my pocket...thus affording thieves a chance to pillage the contents of my trunk ;-).

I had noticed that when the car was locked I could still walk up and open the trunk before I unlocked the doors...

I guess those Koreans made the smart key right.

Yes, thats right... its in the manual... the trunk will open with the proximity key in proximity. I dont remember if it automatically locks again after the sensor loses the signal, but I think it does.

The trunk is always locked (latched). If you have the proximity key in your pocket you can open the trunk by pushing the button on the trunk door itself, exactly like the two front doors. If you don't have the proximity key with you, you would have to open it with the toggle-type switch inside on the driver's door.

I just got my car yesterday and am having trouble locking the car using the button on the doors. All I get is the warning chime and nothing happens when I press the button. The manual says this can happen when the key is in the car (it is not), any of the doors are open (they are not), or the ignition is in acc / on mode (it is not). I can unlock the car just fine using the button (with the remote in my pocket) and it locks just fine using the lock button on the remote.

Any ideas please for the new guy?

Sorry... figured it out (and this IS a tad embarrassing). Turns out the second remote (which the dealer claimed was lost with a replacement on order) was wedged below the driver’s side windshield wiper. It must have been close enough that the car thought it was inside the car. So the car behaved as designed! And I feel like an idiot. But all is well know and the door works just fine... and that second remote still works even though it spent the last 2 days braving the elements... not even a scratch on it.

Day 2 and I'm really falling in love with this car... hard to believe it cost thousands less then my 07 Saab and it feels infinitely nicer.

The mystery of the trunk locks was driving me crazy until I researched it and found your posting.

I know your posting is a year old, but as of today, November 2009, the documentation still doesnt' describe how the trunk lock REALLY works.

Your posting set me straight. The problem of how to lock the trunk was driving me nuts on my new 2010 Genesis Sedan.

Vlad - be sure to take the extra key. They cost almost $300 if you lose it. Grab it if you can!!!

FYI, if you received the third transmitter from the dealer, it would not come pre-programmed to your vehicle. If they (the dealer), program one "key" they will have to program the other two in order to work.

I know how Vlad feels. I couldn't get my doors to lock as well and it was because the other key was in the center console (which I knew about) but didn't put two and two together.

Yes, play dumb and keep the extra key even if it doesn't work with the car. If you loose one during the lifetime of the car you can just go to the dealer and get it reprogrammed.
