  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All,

Well I'm still in search of my first Genesis and I'm trying to explain to a salesman out of state where to look for the various VIN stickers. He can't seem to find the one on the hood. As I recall it's generally on the front portion of the hood, just to the passenger side of the hood latch.

Would someone please confirm that's where it should be.

No VINs, No Deal...

Thank you.

Are you asking to make sure that the various VIN numbers all match, or just want to find any VIN on the car? All car salesman know where the VIN is located inside the front windshield and if they claim they don't know then the person talking to you is a con artist. If you are having them look for multiple VIN's, why are you doing that?

My goal is to make sure that the vin numbers/stickers are all present and matching on the car before I consider it further. If the original vin stickers are there, the body panel is original to the car. If it is original to the car, it has not been damaged in an accident.

The vin stickers are a great tool for checking out a used car. Any one that counts on Carfax and doesn't do their homework, is begging to be taken.

I think you are being a little paranoid, and even if the VIN's match, the car could still have been in a serious accident anyway. Thankfully, I haven't purchased a used car since I was in college, and I have no intention of ever doing so.

Another route that you could take would be to run the VIN by Hyundai themselves you can call Hyundai at 800.633.5151 and give them the VIN. They will tell you if the vehicle is eligible for coverage under the HPP or not and any service history of the vehicle with them. Also carfax may not have all the answers but they can point you in the right direction to look for info. If a car has been taken to a dealer you can call the service manager of that dealer and and ask about the history of the vehicle. Chances are it is not the same dealer that is selling it and they are more than happy to talk about the car. I did all these things prior to my purchase and it saved me from at least one bad egg.

Carfax showed it had an accident with damage more than 1000 bucks. Come to find out that the dealer that had her prior to her being sold at auction went off the road in the mountains of Utah with her on the way to grandma's house and had to replace the passenger door and rear quarter panel. Then I come to find out through calling body shops in the area that the dealership that was selling her is known for dealing in wrecked rides and the owner of the body shop was willing to put me in touch with 3 people who had bad dealings with said dealer. Needless to say I did not pursue that particular car any further...despite the nice price.

When it comes to car dealers there is no such thing as too paranoid. They are worse than lawyers and teenagers...well you didn't specifically ask that or tell me this.....Can't stand that BS.

I feel the same way about car salesman, which I why I haven't purchased a used car since college. It's bad enough purchasing a new car, but buying a used car is much worse. My point was that I would have the car looked at by a expert, since even if the VIN's match, there still could have been serious damage to the car.

Thanks for all of the great input. I have actually purchased many used cars in my day (most at manheim auctions), so I have an excellent understanding of ways to prevent buying a bad car. Making sure all of the vin stickers are there is the best first step beyond reading the carfax.

This particular car is missing the vin sticker on the front bumper, so I'd like to know if the hood was replaced as well. It seems the front qtr panel vin stickers are there. So if the hood is original but the bumper has been replaced it should have been a minor repair. If the hood and bumper were replaced but not the fenders, then moderate repair.

If possible, it would be very helpful if someone on this forum would kindly go out to their Genesis sedan, open the hood and just let me know where their vin sticker is in relation to the hood latch.

Thank you.

On the flip side of that, you have people like me who hate the look of stickers all over the place and remove them, including some VIn stickers. ;) So just because it dosen't have a VIn sticker in a certian place dosen't necessarily mean that it was in a wreck or the pannel was replaced.

Thanks for the input, but I suspect you are in the extreme minority, but I could be wrong. However, this car has the appropriate vin stickers on the trunk and all four doors, so I would bet that if the previous owner had hated the stickers as Crusty does, the door and trunk stickers would be the first to go. In fact the last place most would look to remove a sticker would be the underside of the front bumper, where you can't possibly see it without sticking your head nearly under the front of the car.

Look folks, this is a valuable forum and I'm grateful for all that I have learned from it, but honestly all I'm looking for here is just a quick bit of input with respect to where the hood vin sticker normally is so I can ask the salesman to confirm it's existence (or not). This was not meant to be a discussion of how to buy a used car or anyone's personal tastes. However, if the forum members wish to move in that direction, I'd be thrilled to participate in such a discussion under an appropriate thread title so that we can all benefit from each others experiences.

Thank you.

The Hood VIN sticker on my 2010 is located about a foot to the right of center(standing in front of the car drivers side) and about 4-6 inches from the front edge of the hood. It looks like a printed strip with the VIN printed on it and nothing else.

The OP puts me in mind of Stephen from Braveheart "The almighty says don't change the subject just answer the efing question! LMAO

Thank you Vermillion....That is exactly what I was looking for.

This thread can now be closed.

Six useless and borderline insulting posts and one useful that answers the OP's question. Com' on everyone, let's work to make this a friendlier, more inviting forum.

In my best Matt Hooper:

Aye, aye, sir! AYE JIMBOY ARAGHHH! I don`t have to take this abuse much longer! :D

I find this board quite informative 99% of the time; however; one must also realize that all posts one receives will not always be helpful or timely. As this request required one to "look up" the info the requester wanted. To expect anyone on this board to drop what they are currently doing and look that up immediately is a bit demanding; IMHO from a site that is at all of our leisure. Besides a 3 hour turnaround is darn good for a forum post during business hours.

I would not catagorize them that way, more of they were adding a different perspective to why one may not find a VIn sticker that one was looking for.

To the OP, you are correct that I did not climb under the front bumper to remove the ofending stickers, but the door and trunk ones are gone. ;) Now I'll have to go find the bumper and hood one. :)

OP wasn't clear what as to what he wanted. Therefore, your categorization of what posts where useless/insulting may not agree with everyone else.

Don't forget about the engine block and frame rail etching:D

If we're going to keep beating this dead thread, perhaps you guys should go back and re-read my original post.

I was very clear exactly what I was looking for - a description of where the hood vin sticker typically is. I didn't mention anything else about etchings, why people remove vin stickers, motor and frame vins, what others look for when considering a used car, what lottery numbers I should pick this week, etc., etc., etc.

Although this is still a free country (at least until BHO gets through with us) and you can certainly reply with anything you like, but for this forum to remain both a good and relevant resource for people like many of us here, actually answering the question would be far more helpful. And, if you can't answer it or at least provide valuable insights, then please don't hijack the thread.

In the end, Vermillion3 provided the answer I was looking for, so the process worked, but the back and forth within such a simple thread seems pointless.

Flame me if you like, but it's the truth.

Rest assured, Bells, that I was watching this thread and saw about what I expected.

I knew exactly what you were looking for, but I was at work. I'm glad you got your answer, and I know you will continue to find answers here. The flaming usually isn't QUITE as bad, but it's still there.

Enjoy your stay and let me know if you need anything!
