  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone had this happen to them?? Internal failure on the A/C compressor??

Yes, at about 32,000 miles on my 2005 Acrua.

I only have about 11,000 miles on my 10 month old 2012 Genesis.

It's what warranty is for. My Acura was only about 11 months old.
Enjoy the loaner and don't worry. My replacement compressor on the Acura was going strong at 239,000 miles.

The part is not in yet. They offered me a rental car when it's time to install it.. I think I will say no and just insist on a loaner. I don't want to be seen in anything else than a Genesis.. (apart from an Equus of course). :D

When my a/c comp. went bad I took the Acura in and my comp. also had to be ordered. I got a loaner right then and drove it for three weeks until my car was repaired. In that three weeks I had to make a trip from GA to KY. I put nearly 3500 miles on the loaner.

1994 ford aerostar, compressor died, but my mom drove with it still running and it destroyed itself and spit the parts all through the system, required a complete system replacement to the tune of $3000

wife's 2004 CRV compressor died in 2010, it belched parts of itself throughout the whole ac system as well. $3500 repair

wife's 2004 CRV compressor died again last week, so it got traded in toward a genesis, and i gave her my camry.

apparently several honda vehicles have a phenomenon called "black death" when it comes to air conditioner compressors.

The service guy actually told me to go ahead and run the A/C - that no damage would come from it. I find that hard to believe, so the last 3 days (as well as the next 4 coming up) I've driven it completely w/o A/C. Thankfully I go in at 5.15 and come home at 19.45 - while it's still below 80F.

This will be covered by the warranty.

I'll say this:

All mfg. have warranty issues. God does not build cars.

The only thing that matters is whether or not the problem is handled to your satisfaction. Repeat problems are dealt with through lemon laws which actually work OK. I've had both a GM and Chrysler bought back from me. One dead compressor isn't a big deal, three would be an issue. Good luck.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not upset in any way.. I just found it odd that he would tell me to go ahead and keep using it, as it sounds absolutely horrible - like the entire car is on it's deathbed.

Actually I'm surprised as well. I would have bet money that they would have disconnected the A/C clutch during the diagnosis so it no longer ran no matter what you did. Maybe the service advisor assumed the tech did that, but in any event, they're on the hook to fix it under warranty. IMHO I would say do not run the A/C regardless.

Thanks for the advice.. It's reassuring that I'm not the only one who found the service tech's advice odd.

UPDATE..

They finally have the new part, but fail to notify me; it's actually been sitting there, waiting for 2 days..

I take my Genesis in and they tell me it's going to be a couple of hours. Lo and behold, I get a call from them after 2 hours, that now they need my car at least until tomorrow afternoon!!!

Guys, all I ask is that you're honest with me from the get go. Don't tell me "..a couple of hours.." and then all of a sudden change it to 2 days.

Its not possible to change out a compressor, pull a vacuum on the system and install 134a, pressure test, and road test, and do paper work in two hours. The service manager should have known better. Hope you got a loaner because it could be 3 or 4 days in the shop if the test don't go well.

I wouldn't know how long it takes, but if it's not ready by tomorrow, they better give me a loaner.

LOL! I had to drop off my new Genesis overnight today to have the Perma
Plate applied, and they offered me a rental. I never realized how spoiled I'd gotten driving a Genesis for the past 3 weeks, until I got into the rental, a perfectly serviceable 2012 Nissan Altima, and it felt like I was back in high school driving a 1981 Datsun.

Counting the hours till I get the G back tmrw!

At the very first service where I did not wait on the car, I asked, "What Kind of car they would be giving me for a loaner" and added that my Acura and Mercedes dealers always gave me a new model. Now they tell me at the time of scheduling that they will have a car ready for me when I get there (no waiting). Of course my Mercedes dealer here in Athens GA offers to come pick up the car at my house and leave a loaner. In fact the Acura dealer now will do the same for up to 125 miles away. A lot of Hyundai dealers need to step up.

Yeah, I actually was surprised they offered me a car, and I expected at least a low end but new Hyundai, which I thought might be kind of fun to experience for half a day. Then they gave me a slip of paper, pointed to the door, and told me to walk around the block, down an alley, turn left and give the paper to Enterprise rent-car to get a rental.

I guess it was better than the alternative, which was to wait an hour for the shuttle. So I give them props for that. But I definitely did not have a delightful experience my first time out the gate having my new G serviced.

Not only was the service desk guy rushing and glossing over a lot, but he seemed disinterested and bored. I came in with a list of questions that I had saved up for the past few weeks, reasonable and thoughtful questions. After getting through about 4 questions, I gave up because he seemed to know less than I did about the car. It was definitely not what I expected.

Oh well, still love the car and can't wait to get it back in 12 hours, I hope!

I rent between 60 and 100 cars a year for work.
Every single time I have gotten back in my personal car after driving a rental, I appreciate it more.

I'm surprised.. the car is ready and I'm on my way to pick it up. Hopefully everything works to perfection.

UPDATE>
Car is running immaculately again, with a fully functioning A/C, which btw works even faster than before - more than sufficiently for this hot Southern California heat.
