  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Music For The Lexicon!

I do find that the frequency response of the center channel (it's the elongated speaker on the dash) is not as good as the door speakers. The highs are missing. Before I call that a fault, it might be by design in that typically as we listen to 5.1, the sound designers try to expand the 'spacial' nature of the sound and thus reasonably little goes to the center speaker.

The center channel, by design, would be of limited range/frequency response. It's purpose is to 'fill in the blank spot' in the audio field, but not overtake the placement (and audio that proceeds from) the mid-highs and tweeters placed elsewhere in the car. Ideally, you don't want to 'hear' the center channel (meaning you wouldn't want it to be the primary source of your audio feed), but if its not playing, you would 'miss' the audio in the sound field.

Another comment made above suggested that the center channel in a movie theater was for the dialogue, and that typically is correct. However, the logic system used in movie production (audio following action) is entirely different from audio recorded in the format suitable for our new chariots.

Porcupine Tree is outstanding!
one of my favorite bands.

P.S. Drop down your rear seat ski pass through & you wll get a better sound with more resounding bass. Trust me, try it, & if you don't like it, you can always fold it back up.;)

Not everyone likes the Beatles... I'm not sure I could stay in the car very long with that DVD playing in the dealer's showroom...:o

+1....Hate 99% of all Beetle's songs & only have 1 down loaded on my ipod of the 2,000 songs that are on there.

The Lexicon Discrete is by the far the best factory stereo I've ever heard & my bimmer has the upper end DSP sound system with an addtional pair of subs. Hell it even sounds better than many custom stereos of competition level.

For those who are curious/interested, there are ways to rip the individual songs off of dvd-audio discs and re-author your own mixed dvd-a disc. This allows you to have a dvd with songs from multiple albums, much in the way you make a mixed cd of music. It's not as easy as doing a cd, but dvd-audio ripping has come a long way, and is not difficult as it once was. If there's interest I will start a thread with a tutorial.

I would love to see such a tutorial thread!

That's the problem. You've been listening to Volkswagens. You should try listening to the Beatles instead...

For Christmas my son got me an iPod and loaded tons of music I love. He asked be yesterday if I've listened to it much. I had to say no. I've been playing with the DVD-A so much!

He's 19 and has one of those 'bleed from your ears' subs and amps in his car and HE loved the cool stuff on the Chesky DVD (http://www.chesky.com/core/details.c...ctcategoryid=2 ). He wants to borrow it. When your 19yr old wants to borrow the DVD-A from the 56yr old dad... :D

It's now official: I have no CD's in the changer, only DVD-A's:

Marvin Gaye
Diana Krall
Elton John
Beatles
Dizzy Gillespie
David Bowie

For those that love the surround aspects of "Love", wait until you hear "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (Elton John for you youngsters out there)! It will blow you away, and I'm not even that big a fan of his. Unbelievable.

Growing my collection of DVD-Audio disks. Now have:

The Beatles - Love
Good but not great in my opinion. The one exception for me was "A Day In The Life" - fantastic sound. I like pure Beatles and too much of this DVD is a funky mix.

Elvis - 30 #1 Hits
The newer songs are very good, the older stuff kinda weak for 5.1, but that is somewhat to be expected. Nice mix of Elvis tunes - the wife loves anything Elvis and this sounds better than a regular CD

Eric Clapton - There's One in Every Crowd
The one I wish I hadn't bought. I love blues, but this is early EC in his reggae mode. The sound is not very good either. A waste of cash in my opinion. I'll have to pick up "Ridin with the King" sometime.

Pat Benatar - From The Front Row
Very good live sound. Close your eyes and you almost feel you are at a concert. I may try some of the other "From The Front Row" DVD's

Steely Dan - Gaucho
Outstanding sound separation - the best of anything I have. Some of the sounds seem to come at you from outta thin air! Well worth the purchase if you like their music.

The Who - Tommy
Just got this one. Need to listen to it a few times, but on first listen it is top notch. Crank up pinball wizard - great stuff! It comes with a second dvd with a bunch of live studio edits. This alone made it worth the purchase to me as it gives you a feeling of being with the young members of the band as they put this all together. One of my favorites so far.

Gotta go get me some more of these disks. After listening to them I have no use for XM radio (except for the comedy channel once in a while). The FM is good, CD's are better, but DVD-A is head and shoulders above all other options!

DesertGen:
Took your advice and bought Gaucho (and 5 others) today. Your description is spot on, maybe even understated. Beautiful sounding, great example of surround sound.
Coming back at you, I would suggest Mannheim Steamroller's Walt Disney album. Picked it up today also, and another perfect surround experience.
Thx for the tip, and now we need to talk Hyundai into a 12 disc changer...

The man is dead on  The two ways to be blown out of the car is the "Intro" which plays after you select DTS, but before it gets to the first track. The second is the 'hidden track' Seven Bridges Road, which only plays with DTS, and it has to be manually selected via the play list. (it's at the bottom of page 2) Set EQ at treb 50%, mid 75% & bass 100%

I can't find the hidden track. Are we talking about the Eagles DVD from the tour a couple of years ago that was recorded in Australia? If so, how do you "manually select via the play list". I don't see it listed on the bottom of page 2. Is it on Disc 1 or Disc 2? Thanks.

It sounds like he's talking about the Hell Freezes Over dvd which has the 7 bridges road extra track.

Note on the previous Elvis dvd-audio, with most of the songs they were originally recorded in mono. So they had to do some sort of fake surround with the material.

I agree that Gaucho is an excellent disc. Another great sounding disc that may still be able to be purchased is Beck's "Sea Change".

Ok thanks. I'll stop searching for it on my "Farewell Tour" DVD. :o

I know that everyone is amazed (use the adjective of your choice) by our DVD-A, but is everyone amazed by volume or quality? The following paragraph is from the Dolby web site.

Widely recognized as the successor to the compact disc, DVD-Audio makes your home audio system sound like a live musical performance. DVD-Audio combines DVD technology with MLP Lossless™ coding from Dolby Laboratories to give you music with full 5.1-channel surround sound and fidelity that sounds identical to the original performance. http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_entertainment/music.html

We don't have MLP Lossless. I sure someone can explain what they are hearing. You also should look at this site. http://www.dolby.com/consumer/auto/yourauto.html

I thought "lossless" was the definition of DVD-Audio ?

I'll defer to Cliffbig or Elshagon for the definitive answer to your question.
Btw, "quality" is what impresses me.

First off, the Dolby site is horribly incomplete. For example, they only list two models of Acura as being capable of playing back MLP or Dolby Digital, even though both the Acura MDX and the Acura RDX have had such capability for years (they have the same ELS system as is in the TL). I don't know whether or not the confusion comes because auto manufacturers no longer see the necessity of submitting vehicles to Dolby for certification, but that might be it.

The Genesis most definitely does play back DVD-Audio discs in the DVD-Audio format. I have several DVD-Audio discs that do not have a DVD-video track--that is, they will only play on DVD-Audio capable units. The Genesis has no trouble playing those discs. That's the best test of capability that I know.

The Genesis most certainly does play mlp lossless. MLP is the compression used for the music that's on the DVD-Audio disc itself. On regular dvd's you have Dolby Digital and DTS to compress the music or movie soundtrack, with DVD-Audio they use MLP. The reason they use MLP (Meridian Lossless Packaging) instead of the raw lossless is to compress the music down to meet dvd's bitrate limitations. The MLP you see used on DVD-Audio is pretty much the same thing you see with Dolby TrueHD Lossless you find on bluray discs.

Here's the advantage of DVD-A over DTS and Dolby Digital on regular dvd's:
1. DTS and Dolby Digital highly compress the audio. Dolby Digital uses 12 to 1 compression, yes that's right for every 12 you now have 1.
2. MLP is lossless. Sounds identical to the original. So with dvd-audio discs you not only get the music in surround, but with much higher resolution. The music is generally a lot fuller and less fatiguing.

I talked with Hyundai. I still more than a little confused about the MLP issue, but was told our player is not a MLP player. MLP is the highest quality sound in a DVD-A. We should still get 5.1, but not MLP. I was uncomfortable with the answer so went digging and found this, http://autos.signonsandiego.com/autoshow/hyundai-genesis.php

I think the answer is forget about it.
