  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Mushy Brakes Result in a $2400 Repair Estimate from the Dealer!?!?

I will have to do that later when i have all the information with me. The dealership called and stated that the ABS module went belly up. However they are trying to get the 3rd party warrenty place to cover it. They don't want to pay for it because no CEL was tripped.
I don't think you need any additional information. This is not a consumer affairs complaint website. They only need information of what happened to your brakes, not information about whether the dealer fixed it or who paid for the repair. Please register your experiences at the site above because it is extremely important and you may save some one's life.

Waveman...the recall is now up on NHTSA's site. Campaign number 13V489.

"SUMMARY:
Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Genesis vehicles manufactured April 30, 2008, through March 28, 2012. The vehicles may contain brake fluid which does not protect against corrosion of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).
CONSEQUENCE:
If the module corrodes, reduced brake effectiveness may result, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners and instruct them to bring their vehicle to a dealer for service. For vehicles manufactured prior to June 01, 2010, dealers will change the brake fluid and inspect the HECU, repairing it as necessary. For vehicles manufactured after June 01, 2010 dealers will flush the HECU assembly and brake system and change the brake fluid. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of December 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 or by email at consumeraffairs@hmausa.com. Hyundai's recall number is 114."

There is no way in hell you should be paying for that repair. Hopefully you don't have any troubles.

I bought my car in Dec. 2010, so it was probably built after June 1. (I'm going to check this morning.) What I don't understand is why they chose that cutoff date for inspecting the HECU and how they can be sure that vehicles built after that date don't have corrosion - I would think that other factors, including mileage driven since build - would also influence that.

I also don't know if the brake fluid exchange that I had done months ago included flushing the HECU assembly. Is it possible to replace the brake fluid without doing that?

Hyundai is repairing the brakes on the car at their cost! I'll post up NHTSA site when I get my car back.

You can sleep better now!:p I have registered my issue! :D

I have great news - after a brutal fight with Hyundai, I was able to get them to cover the entire price of the $2400 repair!

Let me quickly recap the entire sequence of events:

After receiving the shocking $2400 estimate, I contacted Hyundai "Customer Connect" and filed a complaint. They told me that they had to contact the dealer again, who would then contact the "DSPM" (District Service Parts Manager) to seek resolution.

A week later, I heard from the dealership Asst. Service Manager and he stated that Hyundai had agreed to pay for half of the dealer cost of the part and that my cost was reduced to $700. I stated that the was unacceptable, as the ABS controller was part of the recall - where Hyundai had publicly stated that the DOT-3 fluid used in the brake system caused corrosion in the ABS system and failure of the ABS controller. He said that he needed to report this back to Customer Connect.

After a few days and some heated phone calls to Customer Connect, I finally received the call that Hyundai was covering the entire price of the repair!

$2400 to $0 - as it should be.

I must say that my opinion of Hyundai has been seriously tarnished. I spent many, many hours reaching this conclusion. Has Hyundai not heard of the customer relations nightmare that Toyota experienced from their brake issues?

Good luck to everyone!

Glad its getting handled. The process you went through is about what I would have done except through emails and overnight letters so I would have a paper trail.

If you read this thread:

you can see that Hyundai has already agreed to a reimbursement for brake problems, and the recall is not limited any warranty period (unless I misunderstand the terms of the recall).

my car was over 60k miles and I had no issues getting them to repair the car at no cost to me. Same part went out on mine as well. They even reimbursed me my rental while they decided if they were going to cover it as well as gave me a free loaner for a week. I only had my rental sat-monday and the loaner from monday-friday at no cost.
