  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have an unusual issue that I have not read about here before. A couple of months ago the passenger mirror started staying tilted down after taking my car out of reverse. This would only happen very infrequently. Then about a month a go, the driver's mirror did the same thing. Again it was very infrequently. This morning, the driver's mirror did not unfold when I unlocked the car. Only the passenger mirror did. When I tried the button on the door, the passenger mirror folded in but the driver's did not move. When I pushed the door control again, both mirrors folded out to the driving position, but I noticed that the passenger mirror had stayed tilted down again. ( I usually back into my driveway)
Has anyone ever heard of or experienced anything similar? I booked the car into the dealership this week, but the service person had never heard of this happening before. My worry is that the problem may not show up when the technician tries to replicate the issue.
I have a 2012 3.8 Premium pkg only.

These glitches are a pain, take a few pics of the mirrors in their different positions as it happens..Record everything, then if the dealer cannot reproduce the issues, call Hyundai Help Line and start a service Issue..

Thanks, I will start bringing my camera with me in the car.

I went to the dealership today and as I feared, the problem would not pop up for the tech. As I was leaving, it happened to the passenger side mirror in their lot. I called the shop foreman outside to check it out himself. He saw the issue and was able to replicate the problem with the passenger mirror in the lot. He took photos of both mirrors and the dash showing that the car was first in reverse, then park. He still did not find any problem codes and has never heard of the issue before but said that he is going to take it up with H.O. to find out any and all he can about it and get back to me. He told me not to worry, that he will not let this go until he gets an answer and finds out how to fix it. He did not want to start tearing my baby apart until he had something definite to go after. It may come down to leaving the car with them until they can diagnose and repair it but not until he can find out everything from H.O. technical department. I have had a good relationship with the dealership and believe that this will get resolved now that I have proof of a defect.
I will update the group when I find out more and or the problem is resolved.

There is another thread about the mirrors getting stuck if they are adjusted certain ways. Its possible you are getting them in a bind.

I thought of that after reading the thread and checked my mirror adjustments. They are not out all the way, and I am the only person to drive my car, so the adjustment does not change.

Just an update; The passenger mirror failed to return automatically again. This time I noted that the main mirror switch on the door was set to the r/h mirror. I had to go to the dealership to report that the passenger mirror heater was failing and mentioned to the shop foreman (he has been checking on the mirror return issue for me) about the mirror switch position. He agrees that this is the likely cause and has ordered a new mirror switch along with a new passenger mirror to repair the heating issue. I hope this will finally fix the mirrors as it has been going on intermittently for too long with no ideas for a fix. I will let the group know how this turns out.

I have a 12 3.8, and I've once in a great while seen one or both mirrors fail to return to position after the reverse tilt. I found that pressing the seating/mirror position switch returns the mirrors to while they should be.

I can get them to return by readjusting them with the door switch, but they are supposed to return on their own.

Agreed about returning on their own. Although in my experience, this hasn't been limited to just the mirrors. My steering wheel, once in a great while, doesn't return to it's proper position when I start the car, very much the same as the mirrors after reversing. And, like the mirrors, when it does happen, pressing the #1 switch on the door (my wife's positions are set in #2), returns the steering wheel to the correct position. I'm thinking it has more to do with the body computer systems that control this kind of positioning.

I just got back from the dealership. They replaced the main mirror switch on the driver's door, the driver's side mirror glass( failed heater) and my steering wheel( leather starting to come off on the bottom). So far, no problems with the mirror not returning to preset, but it did not happen all the time so it may take a while to be sure it is fixed.
The whole thing took 3hrs and they washed my car too.

I have a 2012 R-spec with similar issues. Even more frequently, the mirror adjustment switches fail, allowing only one direction of adjustment (for instance only outward) or sometimes no adjustments at all. Several times when the mirrors have tilted down for reversing, they don't come back up, and then the adjustment switch fails, not allowing any means to bring the mirrors back to normal. This problem also occurs intermittently for me, in conjunction with a failure of the window switches. I have had it in to the dealer at least three times to have it fixed, and each time they say they have fixed it, and yet it occurs again. The first "fix" was a loose connector, the second was a replaced connector, I can't remember their explanation for the third "fix". I know for a fact that they have not yet replaced the whole bank of switches, which I think is warranted. I also fear that the problem may be with the computer that controls all of the memory functions. This is a very frustrating problem, made even more frustrating by having to leave my car at the dealer several times, get a ride home, etc. I'm getting close to filing a lemon law claim.

I've got a '12 R Spec and have the same intermitent mirror stuck down issue as the rest of you. No big deal. I usually adjust the mirror a little, then hit the 1 memory button or go reverse/drive and it resets. It happns so little that i haven't worried about taking the car in.

SoCal, as for your lemon law, it won't happen for a mirror or window switch, been down that road before. Those are considered "conviences" not "necissities". ;)

FYI, the problem is fixed. The dealer finally agreed to install a whole new switch panel on the drivers side door. This included the windows, mirrors and locks. Not surprisingly, all the problems vanished. Per my service writer, Hyundai is very stingy on the warranty work they will authorize, especially if it requires new parts. I guess that's how they offer such long warranties.
