  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

As I mentioned in another thread, we towed our Genny across country from Sierra Vista, AZ to Lancaster (Fairfield County) OH. When I was checking air pressure in tires, I noticed the OEM Michelin X A/S tires were CRACKING on the sidewalls! Less than a year and a half and about 16,500 miles, these tires are shot. I took the Genny to Discount Tire in Canal Winchester OH Sat morning for an evaluation. Since it was a Michelin warranty replacement, I got the same tires (gas saving or lower rolling resistance) and I got them with a 10% pro rating..(at $216 each, I got the four tires for $86.40 (and of course, tax, the cost to mount/balance, road hazard certs, disposal fee and TPMS reset). But since I bought 4 of them, I qualified for a $30 rebate, so the tires actually cost $56.40. I'll post pics of them (can't from here).....The DOT number on the tires is: B9NP009X0411. They didn't have the 18" tires in stock so the ordered them and called me this morning and I took it in to get them replaced. I've had two other sets of Michelins crack (different vehicles) and a set of Yoks (on our Envoy) crack.

My car is identical to yours including the tires, except I have 30,000 on them. I'll be checking them in the morning.

You don't need motor vehicles in them thar parts....

Yea, we got the car in July of 2011. So with 16,500 miles, we got 90% of the new tires written off. Living in SE Arizona, at 5,000' elevation, it got more UV light...as for ozone, I don't know. Those are the two tire killers. I first saw the tires and thought they were like hairline cracks, but they were not. I'll post photos when I get home. Pretty lame for Michelins to crack like that.

My recommendation is to liberally and frequently apply a tire protectant that has UV protectant. I suggest 303 Aerospace.

I gave mine a good look-see this morning and I do see some very fine cracking along the bead. I don't see anything in the sidewall itself. I use a tire protectant about every other week. Its Eagle 1 brand. Mine were manufactured week 46 of 2011. Tread is well over 50% with just over 30,000 miles. I would like to see your pics to compare.

One of the things I've been asked, when initiating warranty replacement on cracked sidewalls, is "have you used any tire products on the tires"? The correct response is "no." LOL.

Here are my 4 tires, one pic per tire.

If you think these are bad, the Michelin tires on the Envoy, when noticed were missing small chunks of rubber.

Holy Hell:eek: I was not expecting your tires to be in that bad of condition - your old tires are downright unacceptable for their age and miles.

^ this. to quote daffy duck, "Odz my bodkinz".

I just looked at the photos. They remind me of 1975 when I worked for Goodyear Tire And Rubber Co. We(Goodyear) had a problem that looked like this with several production runs of the Custom Steelguard Radial. I think we recalled the tires and gave customers a large discount toward new tires.

303 is the shiznat. Highly recommend.

Those pics look terrible! Mine aren't anywhere near cracked like that. Glad you were able to get it resolved.

Yea, there isn't much else Michelin could do. I got new tires for $86...it's the installation and certs that cost...LOL...but you'd pay for that with any new tires, so it is what it is. Thing is, that had to have happened pretty rapidly...between Jan and now...my wife drove the Genny here last Jan from our home in AZ and I checked it out when she got here and the tires were OK. So until I looked closely at them a couple of weeks ago, they deteriorated. Such is life.

Since mine are the same tires on the same model, I'll be keeping a close eye out for cracks. As of now, I'm in good shape. But if yours happened that fast then mine could too!

WOW now that's what I call cracks! I too have those tires (build date 3/11) and I'm just nudging past two years with 30K miles and there are NO obvious cracks on any of the tires. Gald to hear that your issue with the tires was resolved.

Been driving on them a few weeks now. They seem to be doing fine.
