I've only had my G for 6 months and I've already put some dollars into it (see signature list), but my dealer just handed me a brand new 2013 Equus signature and I can buy it for $49K. Obviously the G will cost me big time to get out of it, but I have to say, a new Equus for 49K is very tempting.

Thoughts?

Great price and a very sweet car. My hunch is that you would have to put in another $15K cash to get the Equus. Edmunds shows the 2013 Equus TMV is $50K (same as the quote you got). Similarly, a new 2013 Loaded V6 Genesis TMV is $39K, and you will have to absorb a used depreciation hit. This give a rough order of magnitude of the price difference between your used Genesis and the new Equus.

All that said, if I had the cash, I would go for it. I had no idea that Hyundai was discounting the outgoing MY cars that much. The Edmunds TMV for the 2014 Equus is $57K, so it would be hard to justify buying the latest MY with that heavy a discount.

Shop around, and then pounce. Or even better, live large, and nab an Equus Ultimate for $56K (or less).

Very tempting, indeed!
I was that close from getting the Equus myself but the R-spec was a better buy at the time, in terms of discount/incentives.

I like the Equus but you can save a lot of money and get the R-spec. Just go to Hyundai and compare the two. Not enough to justify the extra cost. On top of that a lot of difference is in the BACK seat. I don't know about you but the only time I've been in the backseat is when I tried car to decide whether to buy or not.

A bit bigger and a little better ride with the air ride. You can pay for gas and insurance for the life of the car with the savings.

Now if someone gave me one....I would jump on it.

You can get a brand new 2014 with the Hyundai Circle pricing at 55k (Signature) with the Valued Owner added.
In my opinion, it may be better to wait to upgrade to the 2014 and save that extra 6k for it. Since they re-did the whole inside with better quality materials.

I guess some people see it different ways, I see it to where I would regret getting the 2013 knowing that the 2014 is out with the more refined interior and options. However, that is just my opinion :P

I drove the R Spec and while I liked the power, I didn't care for the stiff ride as compared to the V-6. It's not terrible, but I don't think it fit the character of the car, and I have something much faster already. Couple all that with some pretty bad roads in So. Cal., the higher price, and less mileage for a commuter and the V-6 made more sense for me.

The back seat is also a big deal because again, it's a work car that clients can and will sit in, so this is a tempting offer. Had I been able to stomach the POS Avalon this long instead of ditching it for the G, the choice would be obvious.

I think I will push the dealer for a reasonable trade in value for the G and see where this goes. There is more than one CPO Equus in the area for as much or more than this new 2013 so it probably won't last, but we shall see.

As per their websites, Hyundaidealers in my area are asking $46 - $47500 for 2013's.

personally i like my rspec since 98%+ of the time it will be just me driving alone or with the wife in the passenger seat.

If i had someone driving me around, or if i was driving around clients or potential business partners and wanted to impress them, no doubt i would choose equus.

personally it sounds like equus may be a better option for you

you are going to have to determine if the extra cost in insurance, gas, and the trade are worth the benefit.
I personally wouldnt do it as you will get totally hosed money wise. Then again, you can always make more money, but, happiness you cant put a price on.

If you want to pamper business folks in the back seat, go for a used "stretch" Jag XJL. Also, check out how much CarMax will offer you for your Genesis.

Quick question for you! have they given you an offer for you Genesis ? and also how much is your payoff on your car. if the number are right it might be worth going for the Equus .

Holy depreciation Batman!!!

I knew these cars weren't Accords or anything, but my car stickered at $48K, I got out the door for under 40K, and it's now worth 25-28K. Unless I raid the piggy bank pretty hard, that's a big hit on payments. It doesn't make sense taking liquid cash to buy a car I can finance at 0.9%, but the hit is just too much. I think I'll wait until the next gen Equus, hopefully they bring back the massaging seats.

Might as well wait and take a look at the new Kia K900. Full page ad in today's Wall Street Journal announcing availability next Spring. Looks like a lot of the interior fittings are shared with the Equus.

From a marketing point of view, I'm wondering how large the market is for upscale cars without upscale heritage. Now Hyundai and Kia will be fighting for share of this small group of customers.

For the massage seats you gotta get the ultimate package i believe...not the signature...but costs more

Having bought & sold many cars I have decided a new "action plan" when looking for a new vehicle..
The Genesis has pretty much All the technology I require.
Definitely power to spare & comfort equal to many much higher priced vehicles..
So, I take the On The road cost of say an Equus, BeM or MB..
Then look at the amount over and above the original cost of my "G"..
I then deduct a $ amount depending on my personal need for each piece of technology & general road performance on the possible new purchase........
At the end of the day my "G" still comes out $'s ahead on value..
Yes, Hyundai's will never attain the resale value of some Honda's or Toyota's
but I did not buy the "G" for it's resale value.. I purchased it because it's a
damn good car for the money...... Reliability in these days of high tech and
multiple electronic choices (seats etc..) is to my mind pretty good..
Now when I get the "Itch" wifey takes my "G: and gets it Detailed, leaves a few "New Car" smells under the seats and says "there You go"

Or growing it.

I don't dispute anything you said. However, having spent a little time working this deal (no, not fanatically working every resource and beating every dealer to a pulp like the wife) for some time, I got this car for many thousands back of sticker. Obviously not as good a deal as it might have been later, but that's true of all cars. This would not have been possible on the brands you mention, BMW, MB, etc. Having a relationship with a few of these dealers still would not have worked me deal like that, so I felt that I had some insulation from the depreciation that was expected on a G.

Alas, that is not the case. I'm not upset by any means. Rarely can you bail out of a vehicle purchase within 6 months without "taking it in the shorts" so to speak. These cars are relatively cheap, so in the end, I'm not complaining and I'm pretty happy with this car, even compared to some that cost me more than twice the price. Hopefully, the next car is as satisfying, what ever the brand or price.

How many miles were on the R-Spec you drove?

The one I test drove had 7000 miles on it and rode well over rough pavement. When I got my new one delivered, it rode uncomfortably stiff--------------for the first couple of thousand miles. At 5000 miles, the stiffness is gone and is comfortable (and I "ain't" some youngster).

Brand new, maybe 10 miles. I didn't realize these would get any softer and I don't remember anyone else mentioning that here?

My V-6 rides exactly as it did when I bought it, just reaching 10K miles.
