  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Page 5-42 of my owners manual states a maximum load of 860 lbs. for passengers and cargo. Two pages later it shows a graphic of three pictures all referencing a total maximum of 1400 lbs. for passengers and cargo. Which is it? I'm interpreting it as 860 in the cab and 540 lbs. in the trunk although it doesn't really say that.

The label located on the driver's door sill gives the original tire size, cold tire pressures recommended for your vehicle, the number of people that can be in your vehicle and vehicle capacity weight.

So here is a bit more to add to the confusion, my GVWR (4850) is 1100 lbs. more than my curb weight (3748). The door column sticker matches page 5-42 stating 860 lbs maximum weight but page 5-44 of my owners manual is quite clear with example 3 showing 5 passengers at 172 lbs each totaling 860 lbs plus 540 lbs of trunk cargo ( which seems like a lot!!) totaling 1400 lbs.? I'm still trying to get my arms around my GVWR. I drove a fire engine for over 32 years and always it seemed my GVWR equaled the total Front axle weight rating (14400 lbs in this last one I drove) plus the Rear axle weight rating (24,400 lbs) to equal 38,800 GVWR but not the case in this genny....scratching my head. Also wondering if my car max is 860, 1100, or 1400...thinking now it's 1100. Probably more thinking here than anyone else cares to.

Tow weight is not the same as maximum weight (assuming the item you are towing is properly balanced).

Just asking about maximum weight rating....seems like manual states conflicting amounts and one for sure exceeds the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. My point about the two axle ratings (front 2650 and rear 2760) NOT combining to equal the GVWR was a surprise to me. If anyone can look at page 5-44 I think you'll see the incongruities I'm calling out. But I'm not asking about towing.

The numbers used in the Owner's manual are examples only of how to calculate the passenger weight and luggage weight that is allowed. The 1400 lbs is an example, and the Owner's Manual specifically says to consult the sticker in the door jamb for the maximum weight allowed for your specific vehicle:
"The label located on the driver's door sill gives the original tire size, cold tire pressures recommended for your vehicle, the number of people that can be in your vehicle and vehicle capacity weight."

"Refer to your vehicle’s tire and loading information label for specific information about your vehicle's capacity weight and seating positions. The combined weight of the driver, passengers and cargo should never exceed your vehicle's capacity weight."

Ditedog, I think you are confusing an "example" shown in the manual with the "actual" figures for your car which are shown on the door label. I think the examples in the manual are intended only to illustrate how to calculate the cargo or total weight.

GVWR may be lower than adding the 2 axle ratings together due to other considerations including brakes.
