  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2012 3.8 with Tech and Premium was recently wrecked badly by a reckless 20-year old on the freeway. I am trying to compile my own list of comparable prices in preparation to negotiate with my insurance company.

The challenge I'm having is that nearly every 2012 I'm finding online (cars.com, autotrader, etc) appears to be a base model. Those that might not be a base model either don't have accurate descriptions or don't have enough photos to distinguish.

Is there a way to use the VIN to determine what options packages a 2012 3.8 has?

Of the 34 or so I've cataloged so far, all of the VINs begin with KMHGC4DD#CU1, with the # ranging from 0 to 9 and a few with an X instead of a number in that spot. All but two of these cars I can definitely tell are base models. The remaining 5 digits don't seem to have any rhyme or reason either.

Here go... Should show you every option your car has. Not sure how well it will work for newer cars but it is worth a shot. Good luck...

Very cool site! Unfortunately, it shows virtually no information for the Genesis VINs.

It worked for my F250 (See below), but when I ran my wife's new 2012 Honda it had no data at all and her car is an EXL fully loaded with all the bells and whistles... Oh well... Good luck on getting the data you need. Can you go to your insurance company and have them print you a report. I know when we had State Farm, they can run the VIN and get a list of all the options.

The 17 digit Vin was implemented in 1981 for conformity.
First three digits-WMI World Manufacturer Identifier
fourth digit-line
fifth digit-body type/trim level
sixth digit-trim level/body type
seventh digit-restraint system
eighth digit-engine
ninth digit-check digit-mathematical formula and can be 0-9 or X
tenth digit-model year
eleventh digit-assembly plant where the vehicle was produced
last six digits-sequential production number

Bummer. Based on this, the 5th and 6th digits would give trim level, but I believe that would just be 3.8 vs 4.6 vs 5.0/R-Spec, not the specific options packages.

Thanks!

Went to the dealer and asked for a copy of my window sticker based on my VIN. They were not capable of providing a window sticker but they did print out about 8 pages of specific data written in a bit of dealer code but that might help you.
