If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Drove a 2011 4.6 the other day, and it seems to be just what I am looking for in a daily driver. I realize that they haven't been around long enough for there to be many with 200k mi, like the last few fords and lincolns that I've run into the ground, but is this car a reliable candidate for a long reliable lifetime?
I see a few issues from reading this forum, like early amp problems, some other electronic issues and I just read a 14 page thread on the seats stretching, which is particularly bothersome.

The general question is, is this a quality, reliable car, or just one that runs good for a short period of time/miles and then becomes an expensive unreliable hassle to own?

So, I hate to lead off with a couple annoying responses, but I will...

First, what are you used to? I ask, because if you are coming from a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes, the Genesis will be the most reliable and enjoyable luxury sedan you have ever owned.

If you are coming from a base Honda Civic, then you might perceive the Genesis as high maintenance.

My next door neighbor and my father-in-law have both had early models for many miles. Neither has cracked 100K, but they have been highly reliable. I don't think my father-in-law has had any meaningful service outside of the scheduled stuff.

There is not enough data yet, because this is a brand new car as of about 5 years ago, so there are few that have cracked the 100K barrier, much less the 200K barrier. And, the car represents a major move forward from any other model that existed at that time, so you cannot judge a Genesis by any other Hyundai model.

I would buy with confidence. I have been very impressed so far, even though my car is a baby in years and miles.

^ Agree with GenesisCaptain. Homeofstone has put lots of miles (under 200,000) on his virtually trouble-free. You might want to check out some of his posts.

I'm betting on the former myself - I expect the Genesis will be the last car I ever buy.

I have just under 117k miles on my 2011 4.6 with tech and all systems are working fine. No oil consumption, no engine noise, no transmission noise. Never had any electronic problems. No alignment problems.

genesis cap. I did sort of say what I was coming from. a ford and 2 lincolns that all made 200k+ miles. I realize that the car is only 5 yrs old, but I drive 100k in that time, which is not an unusual amount of miles.
I also realize that in forums there are often a lot of folks that complain about the car --as well as those that almost break their arms patting themselves on the back for their wise purchase.. The reader of the posts job is to sift through and figure out what the reality is --if possible.
I appreciate the positive responses, and probably will buy one. It seems like a lot of bang for the buck. I just hope that it stays that way and has reliability closer to Lexus than Audi .

I can say that my 2011 is more reliable than the 2004 Acura that I had. We did drive the Acura to 232k miles but... ac compressor went bad before 50k, cat. converter went bad at 100k, power steering rack failed at 125k. plus a few other items.

4.6 failed at 72K.

However, I believe if I were the only owner it would not have. I have no idea how well the previous owner took care of the vehicle. That said, I am getting my Genny back tomorrow with a brand-spankin' new engine and I am sure to pass 200k now!

Have a 2009 4.6 with tech and at 119,000 miles my engine imploded. Dealership thinks that a rod broke and blew through the engine block. I am a former Volvo owner times 3 and drove all of my cars over 200,000 miles. This will be my first and last Hyundai.

So, I have a 2010 V6 premium, and at 70,000 miles the engine and transmission have been bullet proof.

My problems have been: 1. The seat stops moving, and has 3 times before, fixed under warranty, but now misfunctioning again and 2. Steering wheel will stop moving, and that has been repaired twice before, under warranty, but is still not working. 3. At 57 thousand miles the front door wouldn't unlock with the fob or button, so they replaced the door handle, and if worked better, then it would still have problems, so I showed up with just over 60K miles to tell them it was never fixed, and they said they were sorry, that it was the actuator broken inside the door, and that it would cost $550 to repair. So it works 75% of the time, and I am living with occasionally opening the door with the key in the fob. And I am embarrassed whenever a friend borrows the car because the seat won't move.

Oh, I am afraid to let them fix the actuator in the door, because I so worry that a TIGHT SEAL in the door is need to maintain the very excellent bass sound from the Lexicon stereo.

I think the engine and drivetrain will last the 200,000 miles, but I don't think the interior will, and you will be living with those kinds of compromises that most of us that keep cars a long time will have to live with.

One last thing: I think the V8 will carry the car around with less effort, and will be more likely to handle the 200,000 miles than the V6, but that is based on opinion, and though that might be generally true, it really comes down the quality of design and components.

I did have a V8 GS400 Lexus that I put 200,000 miles on and then sold too cheap. The current owner hast 350,000 miles on it now, and it's running like a top, but the air conditioning did go on it at 200,000 miles, the stereo at 120,000 miles, and the leather was in shreds when sold

Sounds like you came from the panther platform. No it won't be as reliable as those, but nothing will be.

What's the panther platform and which post was this in reference too?
I'm the op and the cars I was referring to were:

1988 Ford Tbird V8 (4.6)
1994 Lincoln Mark VIII (4.6)
1997 Lincoln Mark VIII (4.6)
2002 Lincoln Continental (4.6) trans rebuilt twice

All the above went over 225K with original drivetrain, save the Conti.

Oh, and since I posted this, I did buy a 2011 4.6 with 25k mi, which now is just shy of 40k.

A number of electrical gremlins plague this car (windows, mirrors, steering wheel memory). The seat is soft and not deep enough to really be comfortable, never an issue with the Lincolns and Fords that I drove for many years. And I swear that every once in a while the car lurches from stop as if there is a transmission issue. The car rides fine on the highway, and as others have noted, pretty awful (for a supposed luxury car) on secondary roads.
All in all, I'm not sure that I'm really happy with my choice. Hopefully big ticket reliability issues will not come up, but we shall see.

the Panther platform was Ford's rear wheel drive platform that the Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car sat on from the late 70's to 2010 or whenever they stopped making those cars, I can't remember.

It's in reference too your first post where you said you had Lincolns that had over 200k miles on them. I figured they had to be the Panther platform Lincolns to last that long without issues. Not sure if the ones you had were on that platform or not, but I'm guessing they weren't else you would have heard somebody use the Panther term at some point!
It's pretty well accepted as one of the most robust platforms ever. That's why all those cab companies/police/limo drivers use cars that sit on that platform.

If you were able to keep four Ford 4.6s running with over 200k on them I think you'll be just fine using the Genesis for 200k+ Miles, sounds like you take care of them well!

Yes it will. do regular maintenance. For a car this complex I am very pleased with mine. No issues whatsoever. Runs great goes like a rocket. Very stable at high speed, (140+) no aero add-ons.

09 122k here, Had to replaced the Starter at 100k and the seat tract been iffy, other than that its been a real treat.

its not as soft as my mom Lexus ES300 and definitely not as nice as her S500 but I dint pay for a 3000 to fix a dash light to mercedes benz either

if you are worried, dash out 1500-2k for the extra warranty.

I kinda wish my engine crap out before my warranty is up, that way I get a somewhat newer engine when I give this car to my father and buy a newer version.

I have a 2010 4.6 and it is a lemon piece of garbage. Go buy a Honda, Toyota, Lexus, or acura.

I have an 09 4.6 with tec at 95k

Tons of electrical bugs, and I don't know if its my imagination but the valves are very loud, lots of engine noise in the cabin when idling

Ive also had a lot of problems with the brakes failing. Hyundai did the recall but now are refusing to admit to any further problems. I just shelled out $350.00 for them to bleed the lines and replace a diode that caused the brake lights to go out at the exact same time the brakes themselves failed  I normally do all my own work but I was hoping they would own up to the problem with the brake system. To add insult to injury the service department scratched the hell out of my door down to the metal. They did offer to repair it (after I pointed out the giant and very obvious scrape) but I had a massive family emergency come up and I was unable to get it done. :(

Aside from all that, the car is a dream to drive. I do a lot of highway driving 40k miles last year alone. Handles great, pulls hard and is really comfy on those long hauls. If it wasn't for the electrical I really wouldn't be complaining. Driver side keyless door handle was the first to go, the back up camera fails randomly, the parking assist beeps randomly, the day/night sensor for the auto dimmer and lights goes off randomly, the auto wipers go off randomly, the cruise control shuts off randomly, the stereo shuts off randomly and then comes back on at half volume until you turn the car off and back on, the navigation restarts randomly, the voice commands only work when they want to (usually fails when Im trying to show it off LOL) I'm sure there is something im missing... Is funny when I first bought the car I thought the automatic sun shade would be the first thing to fail, but it works like a charm LOL

Regarding engine noise, have you always used OEM oil filters? And what kind and weight of oil do you use? I have 143000 miles on my 2011 4.6 and it sounds and drives like new. No problems like IcedC.

mobile 1 synthetic 5w-20, I have only used OEM filters from the dealer because none of the auto parts stores in my area carry anything for it. I couldn't even get a replacement DRL when they burned out

I know it sounds bad with all the problems I've had, but they are intermittent problems and only occur enough to be slightly annoying
