  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All...

My trunk is getting harder and harder to open. The latch works fine but its like my trunk is Honey Boo Boo's mom...just keeps getting heavier.

Does anyone know of any lube points or if I need to disassemble any thing to get to the arms? I feel they need some lubrication badly.

Thanks in advance. I hope I remember to come back and check this...I'll bookmark it ;)

I lubed mine with a spray can of white lithium grease. My can came with the "straw" so it is easy to concentrate the spray in one small area. Also works wonders on the garage door hinges, and garage door opener (especially the chain). I guess you could also use WD-40, even though it is a completely different substance than white lithium grease (I think the lithium grease lasts longer than WD-40).

I have garage door lube with the straw...I assume similar compound. Did you just stick it inside the plastic sleeve and spray away?
Not sure I know what you mean by "plastic sleeve." I have a chain drive garage door opener, so I sprayed the entire chain with the white lithium grease. Also sprayed the garage door hinges. The "straw" focuses the spray, but is not absolutely necessary.

I do believe he is talking about the plastic sleeve that covers the trunk hinge :)

OK. I don't recall because it was a long time ago. I know I sprayed the locking mechanism, but don't recall what I did to the hinge.

So back to topic for a moment...

I'm having the same issue on my 2011. Did you determine it is a lubrication issue or perhaps the lifters have worn out or what? When I unlock my trunk the lid basically doesn't move and it pretty heavy to open. It stays open, but only just.

I'm having the same trouble with a 2012. I doubt it's a lubrication issue. The springs or struts that lift the trunk are not strong enough to help the trunk lid open. It unlocks, but sits there and it takes my wife too much effort to open if she has things to put int the trunk. Can anyone recommend how to substitute the weak springs or struts? Is this a warranty issue?

I have this same "heavy lid" issue on a 2011 Genesis. I wish I could find out more about the trunk and its components.

No struts or pistons, rather a curved arm, see picture.
< a piston is installed behind the curved arm, trunk liner panels conceal it from view>

I accessed the lifters by pulling the trunk liner side panels down. The side panel and the horizontal panel are separate panels. This allows pulling one aside and pushing the horizontal up a little. I did not remove any liner panels. I laid inside the trunk to do it. The pistons come off with the aid of a flat screw driver to ease the metal clip tensioner on each end where the ball fits into the socket of the lifter. The 2011 Genesis lifter is labeled as 560N or 126 lbs, the 2014 Equus lifter is labeled as 410N or 92 lbs. Advance Auto had lifters, but no force rating was on the package. I tried them and the trunk will not stay open, it slams shut. They are too weak.
More later, after the ones from the internet arrive and I try them.

I changed these on a 2011 Genesis and a 2014 Equus.
Results; easier to lift the trunk lid, but neither lift or raise unaided by the force of the lifters.

I got some from Rock Auto. $20+ shipping, and weak trunk lid problem solved. Pull the rubber seal up at the too-back of the trunk opening, lift the 3 black hooks and let the top panel drop, and them pull the side panels enough to replace the lifters. Easy enough.

As some say here, check the "lifters" (ie, the trunk struts). That's likely the issue. Change741 helped me a ton with his pictures. Cane says something in his video about 'having to push a little' and that's what I was trying to do...with the wrong struts! I'd have been the proverbial monkey with the football if I hadn't seen his picture and known that the Amazon seller with the product that 'fits all 2010-2012 Genesis without spoiler' doesn't actually fit all (I have a 2012 5.0 sedan). I need the one that's 12.26" long extended, not around 17".
