  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Lately I've been noticing a lot of complaints about people posting images so big that you need to scroll to the right to read posts in the discussion and find the reply button.

When you "attach" images (by uploading them to our server) the system can automatically size down images if they're too large. The system cannot do this when you "hotlink" to images.

The only way to stop this from happening is to:

1. Ask members to avoid posting large images
2. Remove the ability to hotlink to images and force users to upload attachments instead

How should we fix the problem?

I'm a web developer and also did plenty of work involving vBulletin since 2004. There is a modification that can be installed to make images smaller and once clicked it will display a Lightbox popup showing the full image to fit the users computer.

I'd rather use the Genesisowners server, but I ALWAYS get error messages, so I usually just put on photobucket instead and use the URL link option. This makes for large pics though. It seems that I can put reasonable size pics (without being too big) on other forums, but this one I cannot, unless it is very small pics.

Dominic. Would you mind pointing me to that modification?

Scott. We're currently set at a size limit of 200k and 1024x800 for attachments. What do you think I should increase those numbers to? I'm guessing the "error messages" you're receiving are because of those settings...

I'm not exactly sure of what size should be used to satisfy most people, but maybe at least make the width around 1000? Is this doable? The pics I uploaded today were only like 1024 x 806 originally, but even when I re-sized the photo to meet the forum requirements, I kept getting error messages even though I was under the requirements??

The width is already there at 1024. The height is set at 800... I have a feeling it's the "file size" beyond that. If your images were over 200k, you would have received the error message... Maybe I should set the image size to 1000x1000. I THINK most of the time 200k is enough. I'm afraid if I raise is TOO much more than that, server space will suffer. Then again, I could increase the attachment allocation for supporting members...

That sounds good to me. 1000x1000 should do the trick. Time will tell.

The change has been made - including an additional 100k per image. Now... What should we do about the large images being linked to?

I hate having to scroll right and left to read replies to a post. I have a 24" flat screen that runs at 1920 x 1200 resolution. I normally run my browser about 2/3 of the screen width so I have access to the desk top and other open app windows. I've run across some really huge pics in some GenesisOwners postings that force me to scroll right even after I've gone to full screen on my browser. This is a real PITA.

I really enjoy seeing the pictures and I much prefer the "inline" pics that result from linking to a URL. The "attached" pics are a little awkward to view IMO. But, I don't need to see a poster sized pic to see the detail in a pic. As far as I'm concerned, the absolute MAX size could be 1200x900. Even 800x600 pics are good enough.

You will never get compliance from all if you just ask or tell us what max size of pic should be. It will need to be some sort of forced requirement. If you could somehow require all pics to be uploaded to GenesisOwners.com members album area it could work. The album area has these limits:
Pictures Remaining 60
Maximum File Size per Picture 195.3 KB
Maximum Picture Dimensions 800 by 800 Pixels
(I thought "Supporting" members were supposed to get more than this.) After a pic is uploaded it's easy to link from there. You can just copy the "BB CODE" for a pic and paste it into a reply or new thread like this:
picture.php

This pic is 800x600 x 102 KB. The 800x800 size might be a little limiting for some - maybe it could be bumped up to 1000x1000 for "Supporting" members. BTW, the default pic size on my Galaxy S3 camera is 3264x2448. That comes close to 36" x 24" poster size!

Well, that's my 2 cents worth on this topic. Good luck, I hope you come up with something that's workable and eliminates those HUGE pics. :D

I'm not finding a way to adjust album picture file sizes and dimensions on a PER user group basis...

Perhaps I should turn off "thumbnails" for attachments and allow them to simply display inline, in full size...

Turning off "thumbnails" and allowing full size inline attachments could work. But, I'm really curious how these "thumbnails" are generated. I've tried using the "Manage Attachments" feature but all I get is a text link to the attachments.

The FAQ on "attach" says "After posting, the image attachments may display a thumbnail, depending on the forum settings." I've not found a setting that addresses "thumbnails".

How do the "thumbnails get generated?
