  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2012 Genesis and have had the engine stop while driving twice since
October. No indicator lights come on. Both times I was driving under 25 mph
making a turn. Very scary to have this happen. First time I took the car back
and service writer could not duplicate the problem. Today I dropped the car
back again with a different service writer who told me he has never heard
of this problem and" has been in the business many years".
I am worried this is something that they cannot fix and I am not going to be
confident about driving the car without worrying about whether or not it may
shut down while driving for no reason.
Anyone else have a similar problem?
Thanks for any comments or advise.

Call Hyundai direct, get the Issue noted & a Case #..
Get the Hyundai area guy to contact you direct...
although it might be difficult - note down time & place & all/any other details,
if you cause an accident or are involved in one previous notes will be helpful..
So many times over the years (not only Hyundai) the dealers/writers stated
"Never Heard of That" -- :eek: yea right{{{

What is your trim level for your Genesis Sedan 3.8 (Base, Premium Package, Tech Package). How long have you had the car, and how many miles does it have?

My Genesis has the Premium Pkg and has 26000 miles.

Not sure if you have had the car since new, but this is not a problem that I recall being discussed before (but could be a lapse in my memory). Maybe Richard is correct, and related to gas cap.

Loose or failed gas cap vent valve will throw a check engine light and throw an OBD2 code, not shut down the engine. Had mine replaced under warranty after a check engine light came on when the cap's vent valve failed.

My money is on an electrical problem (loose wire or short on the ECU) for the OP's issue.

My bet is the same.
Just two more cents: Tank overfilling may cause chokes... solved when some fuel is burnt. Transient codes may go away.

My Equus did this once at about 8000 miles making a LH turn at slow speed. The gas tank was 1/2 full, and it has not happened since. (14000 miles on car now)

If you need to record this.. Get one of those Russian dash cams that run in a semi loop. It runs all the time the car is moving. Just a fun thought.

Are Russian motorists required to have them, issued through their insurance providers? I know like a ton of Russian motorists have/use them, which is why we get the best crash videos from Russia!

A couple months ago I experienced the same problem that posters Debbyfla and mcrean3 did. I had just exited the interstate and come to a stop at a traffic light when the engine stopped. In my scenario, all indicator lights on the dash came on and the radio stayed on (can't recall A/C). I put the car in park, restarted the engine and moved through the intersection without a problem. The next day I took the car to my dealer, where they ran a diagnostic. My service writer said no errors were logged in the computer, so he couldn’t determine what had happened. He also said he had not heard of this problem before.

I haven't had any problems since, but I still don’t know what caused this problem so I worry about it happening again. The car is a 2012 with about 33,000 miles.

If Debbyfla or anyone else has any updates to share about this problem, please do. Thanks for the help.

I'm going with an ignition related problem. My 99 Acura TL had the very same problem (car died but radio and some other stuff stayed on). Restarted and everything was fine. The issues was solved by replacing the ignition switch.

There was a known short/bad solder joint in the switch.

If you sit in the car and without your foot on the brake, press the start button twice (accessory 2) you will see the same things are on as when the car died.

And it also does not throw a code so it makes it tough for mechanics to trace.

My 2012 Equus did this once on a LH turn. No code thrown, and it never happened again. I set up a case # with the Equus hotline.

Dealer thought it might have been bad fuel.

I've a 2012 3.8 with 40k+ miles, and this has happened twice since I've owned the car. Once was in a turn. Restarted immediately. Not happened since.

Thanks for the replies. I just setup a case number with Hyundai and will follow up with the dealer this week!

YES. We also have a 2012 Genesis sedan. Bought with 21k miles, 1yr old. 3x has this car just out of the blue and suddenly shut down while driving. No warning without control. The steering can lock up as well as brakes are hard to apply. We have 39k on car now. Car is at dealership. This is completely unsafe to drive. Will update ASAP.

In three years, I've had that happen twice. Both times at slow speed, and at least once involving a turn. It's been well over a year since that happened, never to be repeated. Both times, stopped the car, put it in park, and started it right back up. No clue what happened, rock solid ever since.

could you have restarted in Neutral without coming to a complete stop do you think?
reason I am asking is with the neutral safety lockout automatics have not been able to crank the starter in any gear but park and neutral for many years obviously. But you and at least one previous said they put it in park to restart.
no one mentioned if it restarted while in neutral.
