In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi everyone, I purchased a 3.8 genesis about 2 weeks ago and was wondering how everyones MPG was like?? Ive driven roughly 200 miles purely on city and im hitting and average of 12.5 to 13.9. Im not sure if thats normal. I understand there are alot of conditions that change it but I honestly have absolutely no extra weight in the car, have never revved the engine over 2000 rpm, nor have I done any excessive or rough driving.

What model year is it? If 2015, does it have AWD?

But in general, city mileage is not good on the Genesis. It is much better on highway partly due to 2 overdrive gears in transmission.

Sorry I didnt mention the rest lol. It is a RWD 2015 3.8. I could imagine that mileage wouldnt be great but it seems hard to accept that im getting the same mileage as a lamborghini gallardo haha.

That's horrible. I can average around 20-22 around town if I am gentle and use ECO mode. That said, it is hard to be gentle. When I drive aggressively, it can drop into the mid-teens -

Do you have any highway miles at all? On the highway, I can get almost 29mpg being smooth.

Coming from a G35, I am happy. I have a 3.8 Ultimate with about 3K miles. I do know mileage improves as the engine breaks in. Good luck

Mid 20s in mixed driving. Close to 30 on a 160-mile highway round trip.

Mileage jumped up significantly with about 2000 miles on the car. It seems that it took that long to break in.

Much better mileage than my former 2009 4.6. I filled that up once a week. The 2015, I fill up once about each 1 1/2 weeks.

I have maybe about 50, give or take a few. I put in about 15 gallons of premium and even thats not helping. On the first tank my dealer gave me, I got roughly around 220 miles.

Went to the dealer and they told me I need to give it about 2 engine oil changes in order to get near the epa rating, which I also find hard to believe.

Try to find more down hill routes.

If you are driving around Manhattan, I could understand it.

If you have selected auto reset for MPG, the milage starts over after adding more than 1.6 Gal of gas. If you look at the milage after taking off from the gas station, it will probably read low milage like you are seeing. Then, over time it will rise. Hope you are not offended by this possible scenario.

Try resetting the milage by pressing and holding OK, then take a highway trip.
If you get 20 plus MPG, you are good to go.

Good luck,

Brian

2 oil changes? That seems like a red herring. Is it possible that one of the brakes is dragging? Maybe the parking brake? That mileage is quite low.... good luck

Taking a stab in the dark here, but OP lives in LA. Don't they have notoriously bad stop and go traffic? If you're sitting still a lot your mileage is going to drop precipitously.

no offense taken sir. I totally understand where you're coming from. I have tried the resetting option but it goes the other way. Mine drops from 18, when leaving the gas station, to 12, the very next day.

parking brake seems off. I dont see a red (P) when I drive around. I will see about the brake dragging.

If I may ask how much MPG did you guys get during the engine break in period?

If you only have 200 miles on your car, it's much too soon to get worried about your MPG. Most likely your new car has sat idling too, whether at the dealer, or while you have been sitting in your driveway fiddling with adjustments and settings. I know this because I have been doing the same thing with my brand new Santa Fe.

If you are doing stop and go LA city driving, you likely won't get above 16-18 mpg around town. By the way, I find it hard to believe you've kept your engine from exceeded 2,000 rpm for 200 miles.

During the break-in period, it is best if you try to exercise the engine at between 2000-4000 RPM as much as feasible, in order to get the piston rings to seat properly. Usually MPG does improve after engine is broken in properly, but I would not expect a huge difference.

I did realize that idling will just drop the mpg endlessly.

well maybe at 2000 rpm is a bit of an exaggeration but I have feathered the accel pedal for every ride. never seen it surpass 3k.

Maybe i need to be patient with it. I hear that the break in period is pretty length on this car.

Finally the refreshing sound of reason. My car has 1500 miles on it. My driving is something like 60/40. 60 % stop and go and 40% highway. While not completely broken in it’s getting about 19 MPG under those conditions. Best way to put this in perspective is when I was living in Long Island and driving my Inifinti G since new I was getting around 14 MPG. At the time I reasoned it this way. The mileage is really bad but the car is so much fun to drive I don’t care. Then I moved upstate same car same gas but now to my amazement I was getting about 21 MPG…yeh I know still not that great but the fun factor still applies. If that truly is an LA car zielritter is right. Remember you didn’t buy an econo box. Some of our posters have reported gains after breakin so I imagine you should also. I’m sure it’s not going to be significant enough to change your mind as all the reviews have said mileage is not its strong point. You haven’t stated anything else about the car I’m sure there must be some good observations or else you wouldn’t have considered it. If the enjoyment of the car in its present state is not enough to get past the mileage dilemma then it’s time to look for higher mileage car.

Pretty much spot on. The 2015 Gen was never made for superior fuel economy. There's no fuel saving technology such as stop and start or cylinder deactivation. A break in period should be pretty much expected and your driving habits play a huge part in what your fuel economy will end up. Knowing this, I still plan on getting the V8 shortly. If I wanted luxury and fuel economy, I would pick up a 2014 BMW 328.

Have you confirmed by manually doing the calculations to insure your onboard system is calculating properly?

Im just counting my cents to the dollar. I understand its not an econo box but damn, in the day and age we are in, some MPG must have been put into thought, no? Dont get me wrong, I love driving it.

It is true that there arent any fuel saving technology and I wonder why not. I am going to go ahead and use the "But the competition has it" card. hahaha

im in the process of doing so. I even purchased a notepad just for this.

As an Albertan, just approve Keystone and MPG will be less of an issue ;)
