Considering new 2013 3.8 for < $25k. How is reliability?

Hi, my local dealer has a 2013 Genesis Sedan 3.8 (base model) for less than $25,000. Seems like a good deal and drives nice. And less than 100 miles on the odometer.

How is the reliability of this car?

Any big issues to be made aware of?

I've been driving the same Nissan Maxima for nearly 15 years now, and am used to a very reliable near-full-size car that handles great. I'll miss the 5-speed on my Maxima, but I know I can't find a manual anymore at this price range for this quality.

I have a 2013 base model. It now has 22000 miles. I love it. No issues so far..and it still drives like new.

Doesn't have the telescoping wheel. That's a big deal. No fix for it either.

I have one like this myself and if I had to do it over I wouldn't have gotten it. I paid $24880. Otherwise it is fine but it aggravates me continuously without this necessary "option." You need the premier package that does have it plus some other goodies.

I would pass.

Right, the lack of a telescopic steering wheel occurred to me. But I measured the distance from my chest to the steering wheel, and it is the same as my Maxima (that I've been driving for nearly 15 years).

The 2014 Base Trim does have manually telescoping steering wheel. Also comes with 18" wheels that are also standard on Premium Package (17" wheels on 2009-2013 Base Trim).

Interesting. Thanks. No way to convert though. Wheels are OK. The only complaint I really have is the lack of the scoping feature. The rest can be remedied. I have the wings and the center caps and it looks sharp and is perfect but that lack of the scoping annoys me no end.

I understand your situation, but was thinking that OP might be able to find a 2014 at a very good price if he needs the telescoping steering wheel. But sounds like he is OK with the 2013 anyway.

I got to thinking about that. Why couldn't a 2014 steering column replace the 2013 steering column? Seems the dimensions should be about the same. These should be available at several dismantlers who have available parts in their warehouse at very reasonable prices.

If there are no electrical connections wouldn't it simply be a remove and replace deal if it is a manual adjustment? I don't particularly need the automatic electric telescoping wheel.

Sure, why not. Folks here have swapped out their suspension parts from 2009 to newer years. You ought to be able to swap out a steering column.

So putting aside lack of telescopic steering wheel, this is a decent reliable car and a decent price?

Based on my 5 1/2 years on this forum, I would say the Base Trim model is the most reliable Genesis sedan, and quite reliable compared to Japanese cars.

Keep in mind that the 2013 Base Trim models may have Dunlop tires, which are really crappy in terms of road noise, tread life, etc. Other than that, sounds like a very good deal if it only has 100 miles on it and is sold as new.

I concur except I haven't seen any problems with the Dunlops. Is there a problem I should be aware of?

He should ensure that he is the first actual retail buyer to get the full warranty.

Apparently the warranties started ticking on 7/31/2014 as the dealer owns the car.

Yes. Complaints are very rare here. I had one recently as a loaner for a few days and found it quite fun to drive. The 3.8 Lambda engine is excellent, and if you won't be jonesin' for all the techie toys, the base trim is really an incredible value for money.

I'll keep that in mind if and when I need new tires. This is not my daily driver but for longer drives and vacations. Do you have a favorite tire you would recommend?

I will say that I can't really see the need for the V8. The V6 engine seems to have all the power one could reasonably need for sane driving needs. At at nearly 26 mpg overall, I can't complain either. (I keep good records so that is accurate). I have driven the R-Spec over 300 miles and it's fine but I don't have the need for all that power. Some do perhaps. Each to his own.

If the lack of telescoping wheel isn't a factor, the $25K price is certainly a good buy with only 100 miles on the clock which is more likely than not just from customers driving it to see if they wanted to buy it. So it is a new car.

One other factor is the delicious 8 speed transmission. That makes a huge difference IMO. Probably accounts for the very good fuel economy.

Off the subject, any vehicle with the CVT should be eliminated from consideration altogether. Hate that thing. A lot of the Nissans have it as do several others. Get a "real" transmission. The CVT belongs in a wind up toy.

Bridgestone touranza serenity plus are good for ride/comfort, as are most Michelin tires (other than MXM4).

If you have a 2013 Base Trim Genesis with 17" wheels, then the Michelin Primacy MXV4 (but not MXM4) is an excellent tire that is quiet and smooth riding. This particular tire is not available in Genesis 18" OEM sizes, but I believe that the Michelin Premier A/S is could be used.

I did not mean to scare you away from the car just because it has Dunlop OEM tires. Just don't expect them to last a long time, and the ride will definitely get better when you eventually switch to the Michelin's or some equivalent tire.

That's very good information to have and I value your advice. I don't put that many miles on my cars as I am retired so it may be a while before I need tires but I'll certainly consider them.

Now if I could just get that steering column problem resolved!!
