  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This may be a dumb question but does tinting the windows affect the HUD?

Are you talking about tinting of the front windshield? That is illegal in all states, although easy to get away with if you use something like Air 80 (80% VLT) and/or have a medical waiver.

I suspect that it would affect the HUD, but depends on the type of tint film used on the windshield.

Thanks for the help. Like I said "it may be a dumb question". I haven't tinted a windshield before but a black car can get very hot. I didn't think about it not applying to the front. Thanks for teaching me something new.

On my last car, I tinted the front windshield with a special very light blue tint. It is hardly noticeable but does reduce heat. That said, it is a good question although I believe the HUD would still work. You need to discuss specifically with an installer. I suspect they can test it out with a small square for that area. My bet is yes.

Most high quality tint nano-ceramic films, such as would be used on a windshield, are reflective, but maybe a little too reflective unless the brightness could be adjusted.

If you are new to getting your car tinted and need a lot of heat rejection, make sure you get a ceramic tint film such as Formula One Pinnacle (there are other good brands as well). A dyed or charcoal tint film (the kind a dealer will put on) looks great, but doesn't have very good heat rejection compared to ceramic.

Check Google for tint laws in your state, and states where you regularly drive in. Although some people have tinted their windshields, it is not normal to do so, and a standard "quote" will not include that unless you ask them to do it. Plus, if you get a 35% VLT film for the rest of your car, you will want about 80% VLT for windshield. If you have any state inspection stickers or parking stickers the inside of your windshield, that may be a problem. I personally use a folding windshield reflector on the windshield when parking my car in the sun for a long time.

You're fine as long as you leave the front window alone. The Owner's manual warns against this due to the sensors located up there.

Another thing to think through is the possibility of getting double images on the HUD. Somewhere they talk about the windshield glass being special to eliminate the image doubling from the HUD.

It definitely sounds like I would be best to just avoid the front windshield. That will probably be enough for me. Thanks to all!

I am picking up my 2015 Genesis tomorrow. I live in TX and am very interested in windshield tinting. I spoke to the tint shop and they said that the tinting will not effect the HUD. They have tinted other vehicles with HUD and have had no issues. The windshield tinting is supposed to reduce the heat load by 14%. It is supposed to reduce glare by 9%. Assuming it works well, I am going to have the windshield on my other 2 cars tinted.

A good quality (ceramic) tint film on a windshield may reduce visible light by 14%, but should reduce radiant heat by about 40%. But it make the windshield slightly more reflective, and probably make the HUD just a tad brighter. Not a big deal, especially if brightness is adjustable.

My dad tinted the windshields of his last two cars. It makes a massive difference in interior heat, and I really could not notice any material difference in visibility.

Check out 3M Crystalline 90. It is a relatively new product http is supposedly DOT-legal.

Maybe I am wrong, but DOT does not regulate what VLT you can put on the windshields (it is regulated by each state).

But I agree that no one is going to notice Crystalline 90 on the windshield, so not going to get a ticket for violating state tint laws.

Two quick comments on the windshield tinting:

- Llumar Air 80 and polarized sunglasses do not mix.

- Polarized sunglasses and HUD do not mix.

Avoid these two combinations.
