If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all. I've had my awesome Genesis for about a month now. I have about 1100 Miles. It's really difficult to switch to my other family cars to try saving mileage!

Anyway, I love this SHIFTRONIC thing where I 'manually' shift up and/or down. But when the car slows down near the intersection on a red light, I feel sudden JERK when the gear switches itself from the SECOND to the FIRST gear.

Has anyone experienced this 'jerk'? I even tried to shift down myself from SECOND to FIRST to possibly reduce this 'jerk,' but doesn't appear to help much.

I am afraid this is some sort of sign to come with transmission problem in near future. Whenever I see this, I can think of my Honda Accord transmission dying on me in the past... =(

Well, I am a believer in "u should test everything out to see every feature works." Not so sure if anyone tried out the SHIFTRONIC feature, but if you have, please share you experience.

Thank you all for your time and sharing in advance! Enjoy your Genesis! I know I am!

You are likely just feeling the lockup torque converter engaging/disengaging. This is usually more noticable in the first couple gears. Doesn't sound like anything to wrry about or any sign of impending problems. Never hurts to run it by a service tech, but, I think they will tell you it is normal.

if you dont hear anything i agree with iminpa its probally the converter engaging but you should not here or feel them engaging or disengaging you should bring it in for a service check

Mine does not switch itself from second to first when in manual mode. Sounds like a problem to me.

You should have to manually shift it from second to first.

I have a V-8 and mine will auto downshift while in shift-tronic, but not agressively. Without going out to test it, I think mine shifts to 1st once I am stopped or nearly stopped.

I use it extensively in the snow, both for accelerating from a dead stop in 2ND and to downshift to a complete stop. Mine also shifts to 1ST at an almost complete stop.

tested this morning (in manual mode it still auto shifts). the gear indicator did not report 1 until I was stopped.

I don't notice a jerk when slowing to a stop in D mode.

I guess I'm going to have to try this again. When I tried it before I did not come to a complete stop (close to it).

I have heard/felt this in a wide variety of vehicles running the price spectrum. The lokcup torque converter reduces mechanical losses in an automatic transmission by eliminating slip. Some manufacturers only implement the lockup on the higher gears. Many today allow the lockup to occur in all of the gears (although usually not 1st gear). If you were actually in 2nd gear long enough for the torque converter to lock, it is very common for this to be felt and perhaps even be heard. Now, there is a difference between this sound being simply audible vs. being a loud clunk. The slight shudder that is often perceptible is a function of torque/power and what the ECU is doing at the time. The ECU has a lot of control over this. That said, I do think that there is NEVER a problem in seeking out service for something that concerns you, especially on a new vehicle.

Ok, I have tried this again. It does in fact shift to first by itself but only when I come to a complete stop and then it does it without a jerk and it does it silently. You would not know it without looking to see that it says it is in first gear.

oh snap... I suspect transmission issue... Right before transmission gives up, this JERKiness / SOUND can be felt... This is what happened when my neighbor's and my Honda Accord transmission gave up...

Since then, I drive AUTOMATICALLY to avoid any damage. I will check with the service dept...

I was hoping that it was true. "torque converter engaging and disengaging" we'll see.

Wally, u mentioned that u don't notice this jerk when slowing to a stop in D (drive?) mode. how about manual mode? where you go up or down using + or - sign.

Do you feel the jerk when u are in MANUAL model and coming to a stop?

jasonw..keep in mind wally has the 4.6. That has a different tranny than the 3.8. I am not sure what Richard has. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. I notice what you describe in my Passat TDI from time to time. depends how long I stay in 2nd with Tiptronic engaged. You should have the service techs check it out to give you some peace of mind. I do believe that it is likely normal operation but, that is why you have the warranty. Go have it checked out. Let us know what they say.

I have a V6.
