First long drive

Considering 3.6 Ultimate as a touring car. Live in Los Angeles, when I look a the map heading north, I can see pretty long stretches 100 miles plus between dealers. I am sure other parts of the country this may even be greater. In the event of problems how far will the included towing service take us? Is there such a thing as Hyundai authorized service facilities (garages-non-Hyundai) but approved by corporate for warranty repairs?

My first long drive was from Maple Ridge B.C. to Whistler. New highway loaded with high speed, switch backs and hair pins. All I can say is Wow, I loved it. I can't wait to do it again.

Took my Genesis for 170 mile drive and it felt amazing. It gave me a average of 28 MPG. Which I think is amazing. My Sonata v6 gives me 22 MPG max on long drives.
Genesis performs extremely well on hilly terrain. BTW what does the Eco mode do? Does it increase the fuel efficiency?

I guess the '15 3.8 is a bit of a gas guzzler. Must be the extra weight. My '12 routinely exceeds 29, or 30 on a long trip.

It all depends what speed you drive. You weren't getting 29-30 mpg driving 85 mph unless you were drafting. Likewise, I can push 30 mpg going 55-65 mph. I don't doubt the '15 gets slightly lower mpg due to the weight, but i would hardly call it a gas guzzler.

How do you routinely get 30mpg on the highway? At what speed?

That said, if all you are basing forward progress on is gas mileage, then maybe the '15 isn't better than the '12. But overall, you cannot debate the fact that the '15 is overall a much more refined vehicle. It simply is.

I would agree with you if it were a new powertrain. It isn't. They held over an existing, reliable powertrain and the car got heavier. Understandable from my point of view. 2G is undoubtedly a step forward. It was a non-step for the powertrain.

Also to your point, weight has a minimal effect on rolling friction. Most of the mpg losses due to weight are only on the acceleration side and don't apply to maintaining speed. The slight improvement of the drag coefficient should theoretically supersede the increased weight when maintaining a perfectly constant high speed. Of course that only applies to constant speed freeway driving. The weight penalty is real for city driving and acceleration.

How do we know this? I would think since the car is heavier then yes it should consume slightly more however they did tweak the engine/transmission for better economy so that should make them pretty much equal.

If you are going by the EPA estimates of the Gen1 you can forget those as those figures were BS and Hyundai got nailed for that big time. They still are throwing money at me and others for that BS. The new figures are much more credible, in fact most tests done come back surprisingly with EPA estimates and even better which was impossible in the past. If anything their figures are now quite conservative.

When I turned in my 2012 in Aug they gave me a check for the appropriate amount. Just this week I received a form to hopefully get even more money out of the class action law suit against them.

Driving my 5.0 Ultimate back and forth to work on in-town roads only, I get 19.8 mpg (calculated) using the ECO button. Not to shabby for a 420hp engine. This last tank the computer has me at 21.8 mpg as of today. Each fill-up I see improvement on the mpg which I think is due to engine break-in. I have a little over 2000 miles on it now. I burn Super Unleaded and strictly Mobil gasoline. After my first oil change I am going to try regular gas just to see what the drop off is on mpg (not as a cost savings, just a test).

How can you manage to get so high MPS? Are you driving more on highways than city?
I drive mostly in city and my average MPG is only around 10,max 12 MPG, yes when I get on highway it increases up to 18-19. And I am not aggressive driver.
Of course I accelerate harder once in a while just to feel the power and have fun, but mostly I drive normally, and I have 3.8 compare to yours 5.0.
My tires are 3.3 cold, I use only premium fuel, and just passed 2000 mile mark as well. I don't use the Eco mode, just normal driving ,sometimes but not often I put in sports mode, but that's just for short time, I am just thinking what might cause that high gas usage and what to do to improve it.

Ohhh, got it I started to think something wrong with my car Why only Mobil fuel? Is it any better than others?

It is a Top Tier gas. I have always use it in my boats with no issues even though it is E10 fuel.
