5.0 Highway - much better than EPA rating

I just completed a 6 hr round trip from DC to DE and I was easily getting 27mpg on the highway. How is EPA only rating it as 23? Is mine some kind of a freak?

Bet you did not notice you got the model with the 4 cylinder. Hyundai got nailed big time for exaggerating their ratings and now are more conservative than others it seems. I also am getting EPA numbers which I have never come close to on any car because of how I drive. I assume you were doing 55 and being careful though.

I get about 25-26 mpg on the highway at 70 mph. My 2008 V8 got a little better, but had 40 less hp.

I took a nice, long drive today, and my average went up from mid 16.x (lots of sitting in traffic on the way to work) to mid 17.x. Instantaneous when cruising at about 55 MPH on adaptive cruise control was around 40 MPG (fluctuating between about 35 and close to 50). I don't really have any long-term averages just yet because I've only had the car for a couple of days. I'm still on the full tank of fuel from the dealership.

I've noticed that, at 70 MPH, it still cruises below 2,000 RPM. I believe the EPA measures the highway MPG at a top speed of 60 MPH, so with the 8 speed we should get better mileage above 60 than most older cars.

Nice, I have not had a chance to highway cruise yet, my around town average for 2 weeks or so has been 18.8

I don't think it should be all that surprising that you can get better than EPA mileage for some trips under some conditions but over time, the EPA numbers will represent the range for most drivers. I generally get forgettable mileage out of my V6 but I have gotten an occasional 30-32 on some highway trips but 26-28 is more common on the highway (Rated 19/29). I've gotten way better gas mileage in Florida with its relatively flat highways than I do in North Georgia where highways are like a roller coaster (you can momentum drive and get better mileage but it's not that serious).

Until they flashed the CPU against my expressed banning of such procedure (it had original flash from production), I would get 30+ on highway if kept under 75-78 (depending on winds) where it the ECO light stayed on. Premium used with Local CO-OP based ethanol free 91 or Shell 93. I had a high average in rural 4 lane of almost 35MPG flat, no wind, and under 64 or under MPH.

Once the flash happened, best I have done is 28. Typical about your mileage of 27, slightly less in winter (with 19" R-Spec wheels and Blizzaks) . I have 18" Michelin on 5.0 non R-Spec. I am cranked about the morons doing the flash update. Whatever Hyundai did for the CPU flash update, I have soot on the bumper. Also, in town dropped from about 23-25 in suburban driving to 19-21.

I was very pleased with mileage. I keep the tires a few lbs over spec. Better handling, and seems to have less rolling resistance. Also, check the alignment, many came off the boats goofed up when they were tied down. Mine was off out of the factory. Also, Brian was my witness.

One other item. The other picture is of a procedure I do every 10k miles. Knocks off the deposits on the intake valves (PCV blow by, since DI does not wash intake valves with detergent gas)... That also helps. Plus keeps one from eventually having to walnut clean the intake valves.


If you have not had your CPU flashed, make sure they do not.

Genesis mpg reading is exaggerated. When all said and done and judged by a receipt from the gas station the mpg is coming in line w/Hyundai's estimate.

Well, the above picture turned out correct when filling up, and rest of the time is within .5mpg. Normally to the conservative. (Shows lower)

I guess so. I've been getting 12-13 city here in LA and am pissed. I haven't taken a highway trip yet.

I bet with bunch of stop and go traffic. I have found the use of the recommended premium helps overall mileage, especially in town.

What is a "CPU flash" and why would this be done? I'm envious of your gas mileage. I drive the 3.8 AWD and I'm struggling to get 22MPH and I use Shell 100% gas. Thanks for your response.

I am running 2012. Not 2015. Which is at least 550lbs heavier (or more). And no AWD. The 5.0.. I would like to know if 3.8 AWD folks can get a tank full in high 20s or more..

On the way home through PA, my best observed was 28.7. Also, it seemed that running in high 70's mph gave better mileage than running low 70's.

Great feedback. Happy to hear AWD doing that well. I agree with the speed choice. Unless on pure flat land, in my first gen 5.0, seems like better RPM setting and mileage at higher in the 70s. Especially on cruise. Smoother and in more torque band where mileage improves going up hills than running slower. Your V6 likely reacts the same..

The pic above I had with the high average over the trip was on very flat roads. And no adaptive cruise turned on. In that condition, my foot is smoother. Good premium on the V8, 5-20 synthetic oil, good mileage tires at 38-39lbs, no headwind, running "auto" (or setting manually the HVAC air outlets) with AC off, all help a little bit each.

Still cannot get the mileage now than before they flashed the CPU when I asked them not to.
