Thunk in the trunk

Has anyone out there experienced a slight noise in the trunk area. Originally I thought that it was the owners manual sliding around in the trunk when I accelerated away from a stop.

I removed everything from the trunk, including spare and tools.

The intermittent noise (a low thunk) occurs at low speed turning or moving off from a stop. It seems to be coming from one side or the other down low behind the rear seat. I keep suspecting it might be the inertia reels for the seat belts.

At Red Hoagland, my dealer, we have put the car up on the lift and inspected everything. Suspension, driveline, gas tank, etc., etc. Nothing!

Any suggestions? Any similar experiences?

Possibly the Auto Hold function? Are you using Auto Hold when this happens?

Completely unrelated but while we're at the trunk...... Got out of my car, locked it and stood next to the back side of it for a few seconds while trying to cross the street to go to a restaurant. When I sat down to order I inadvertently looked across the street toward my car. A wind gust had opened my unlocked trunk leaving it wide open and standing at attention .
I'm a big fan of the auto open trunk feature but a word to the wise, don't forget you have that feature while standing anywhere near the back of your locked car for a few seconds .
As for your noise, I'd check the seat belt auto tension spool as well as the battery hold down. I've not been under this car yet so I'm not exactly sure what's under there so until I do all I can offer are guesses. Another 'clunk' source can be rear sway bars. Often they look and feel snug but need to be tightened. If your dealer hasn't already done this have them check the motorized rear sun shade mechanism. Lots of stuff in the back of these cars besides kids that can make noise .

I have noticed the thunk as well, usually when making a left hand turn after a stop, at slow speed.

I hear that noise every time when I reverse the car or specially on cold start. It comes somewhere from rear passenger side seat.

That's exactly where my rear seat passenger said it was coming from yesterday.

Could this be simple shifting or movement of the battery? It is behind the passenger seat in the trunk.

I don't drive the new Genny on a daily bases, but I test drove 2 different 5.0's - yesterday and today and I didn't notice any of those symptoms.

I am so happily surprised to see this thread. I noticed this thunk while backing out of my driveway (slight incline and I gunned it a little bit) and then as I pulled off. I thought it was my laptop bag shifting in the trunk but when I checked, it hadn't moved. I will continue to check back to see if there have been any finds. *side note* I still get amazed at the info I'm able to find in this forum..I'm a Genney newbie...less than a week old...5.0 Ultimate and I LOVE it...however that thunk in the trunk is a little unnerving.

Just heard it, soft right turn under medium acceleration. Friggin loud this time! Anyone game any insight into the root cause yet?

Red Hoagland Hyundai just called. They were not able to hear the thunk in the trunk, but nevertheless kept investigating.

What is interesting, is that Manny, my tech, decided to check the torque setting of the rear suspension mounting bolts.

What he found is that certain bolts, while tight, were NOT torqued to spec. One bolt required 3/4 turn to be brought up to torque spec.

I am having the taillight fix, and other small items done.

So tomorrow afternoon I will have the Genesis back, and I will be able to see if this fixed the thunk in the trunk.

I'm having the same issue, very strange and not consistent. My plan was to keep driving it like I stole it until whatever's thunking falls off and is hopefully covered by warranty😜

I've heard it a few more times, kinda startling when it's loudest. It's not really a metal on metal sound IMO.
