Smart key info...

Hi I'm new to the forum, and I just purchased a new fully loaded sedan about two weeks ago. My questions is and probably stupid, and I searched and searched here and on Google oh and the manual...but no answer...
If the smart key has a dead battery, you can open the door with the manual key, but how would you start the car...I have no idea where in the dash or close by to insert the key fob to manually turn it on.?
I have my Infiniti G37 has a key fob too but it has a port on the knee area to insert it if the battery dies... Please let me know thanks

The smart key has a physical key inside it which can be used to both open doors and start the car.

I believe you hold the smart key next to the start button. Try removing the battery and trying it.

As with all push button start cars I have had, there is no way to insert a key and start the car. That being said, I wrapped a spare fob in Aluminum foil and have it hidden in my car. I can always get into the car with the physical key and retrieve the spare fob. If you happen to lose the entire fob, you can remotely unlock the car via Blue link or after market installation like I have and again retrieve the fob so basically all bases are covered unless you are in no cell service territory.

Obviously the car cannot be started with the physical key (can only open doors, glove compartment, and trunk).

In the older Genesis models there was a slot to put the smart key into if the battery was dead/weak, but starting in about 2012 (not sure exact MY) they said to just hold it near the on button to start the car. I am not sure if this works if battery is completely dead, or just very weak. My guess is that it does not work if battery is completely dead (even when they had a slot).

The 2032 battery can be obtained at just about any store that sells batteries (check the camera department), so even if the battery went completely dead (unlikely before you realized it was very weak) you could replace it fairly easily (need a small screwdriver to pry it open). I replace the battery in both my smart keys (keyfobs) about every 3 years, and don't wait for it to fail (they usually come in packages of 2 anyway).

Thanks, however loss or failure other than battery or dropped in the water or whatever may not work so well so I will stick with the hidden spare fob thing.

Put a New spare Battery in your owners manual in the glove box. Then you can easily replace the battery after you enter the car using the metal key. Ta da

Thanks, however loss or failure other than battery or dropped in the water or whatever may not work so well so I will stick with the hidden spare fob thing.

Thanks for trying this - good to know it works even with a completely exhausted battery (and you should notice there was a low battery before this).

I dont think I have ever had to replace the battery in a keyfob. But then I never had a car longer than 3 years, lol.

This topic was kinda beat to death on another thread - but basically you need to get a spare keyfob - the genesis "allows" one spare. The catch is that this little item will cost you about $400-$450 at the dealer - including the fob, programming the fob, and cutting the "sidewinder" metal key.

Then you can hide the metal key in a mag. key box while keeping the spare fob inside the car/trunk - preferably disabled with a foil wrapper or battery removal.

Otherwise if you are away from home and don't have a working fob - you are just about out of luck.

*** footnote: in addition to a fat bank acct., it takes one Hyundai Genesis plus both original fobs to make a third working spare fob.

I believe you can program 3 fobs. Reason I say so is the Canadian V8 model comes with a smart key card and 2 fobs so 3 in total. I keep one in the car hidden in foil, use the credit card fob and still have a spare at home.

Actually, Midnightsun proved that a fob without the battery will still start the car - so this whole "issue" is really a non- issue. No need to do any of the above if you're fearful of a dead battery - your dead fob will still start the car!

Thank very much guys great info here....I read the spare keyfob thread before, but that's was not the answer I was looking for... I guess on this car you have not option. And having a third key want meant by Hyundai to be "hidden". I just figure it would like any other car out there with a keyfob they you can insert In the dash somewhere in case of keyfob not operational. You know a back up, but I guess I'll keep a spare 2032 battery In the glovebox thanks anyway...

When the dealer made up my "third fob" - he said that they could "make up one from scratch" if you were stranded somewhere. But, he also made it clear that it would be an experience that you would regret - worse than shelling out $450 in advance - whatever that means.

But if you lose your fob, you also can't get into the car either, so starting is your second priority in that case. I suppose if you get a locksmith to get you in, then having a spare fob to start the car is beneficial. However, if you remote start once inside and with the car locked, do you need the fob to put it into gear and drive off? I don't think so - so that might be an option too? I'll have to see if that actually works as it could be useful in a pinch.

What a brilliantly simple idea (that I wasn't smart enough to think of)! Pure Genius.
Tomorrow I'll be getting a set of spare batteries for both my Genesis and my wife's Lexus. According to the date stamps on the packages, they are are good for about a decade. Small price to pay for insurance.

The reason I had a third fob made is as follows:

I'm gonna disable the thing w/alum. foil, or removing the battery, and put it somewhere, probably in the trunk. The metal key that came with the fob will be in a magnetic box under the car or around the back bumper. The metal key gets you in the car (or trunk).

Sounds like a lot of trouble, but I have been advised over and over again that you will be in a world of hurt if you find yourself somewhere with a genesis and no fob at all.
