  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was looking at my car insurance and it is listed as a R-Spec. When I called and spoke to a rep, I told them it wasn't a r-spec and they said all they can do is go by the VIN.

I then checked edmunds vin check and it comes up as a r-spec there also..

Can someone with a 5.0 check their vin and see if it says r-spec or not.

Thanks,

Not to look too stupid - but what is an "R-Spec"? - I googled it and didn't really find the answer.

An R-spec is the top level of the Genesis 5.0 model line. Differences from the regular 5.0 include a stiffer suspension, 19" wheels and low profile tires and badging. It also comes pre-optioned with full tech and premium.

I believe that in model year 2012, Hyundai produced the following Genesis V8 models:
  • 4.6 Sedan (regular fuel injection)
  • 5.0 Sedan (Gasoline Direction injection which replaced the 4.6 during the model year)
  • 5.0 R-Spec Sedan (Gasoline Direct Injection)

After 2012, the only V8 available was an R-Spec. So some of the VIN lookup sites may just be wrong in assuming that for 2012 that the only 5.0 is an R-Spec, but not sure what difference it makes.

You are correct about the wheels, tires, and suspension, but I believe that the regular Genesis 5.0 had the Technology Package (and obviously Premium Package) features as standard equipment. R-Spec had a different steering wheel and slightly different interior trim.

My plain vanilla 5.0 has 19" wheels (a big plus, in my opinion), tire profiles? 40% front, 35% rear, pretty low - plus they're the new 96W rated conti's so I can go 170 mph! The badging - I can probably eke by without that.

So, I guess I'll keep the old jalopy - it's only got 800 miles on it.

thanks all

2012 5.0, which I have one, has both tech and a Premium. Listed as standard on window sticker. It also shows the Sachs suspension, same sized say bars as the R-spec... Only suspension difference is 18" wheel and non gum ball tires. Oh, and the brakes are also the same. It is a sleeper.

All 2009-2014 Genesis sedans have Sachs (ZF) shocks/struts. The only differences are the shock rates, depending on V6 vs V8 (to account for difference in front end weight), model year early model years were stiffer/bouncy), and trim level (2012+ R-Spec is stiffer than other 2012+ models, more like pre-2012 models).

Spring rates also varied to match the shocks/struts.

Since R-Spec sedan was only available from 2012 - 2014, we are not talking about 2015 5.0 V8 model.

Somewhat redundant, as the Tech package includes the Premium package. It is impossible to have Tech and not Premium.

Thanks much for a much needed clarification - I can stop wishing I had bought an "R-Spec" - And maybe my ins. co. will like me better.

Your DAY will be over soon. The '16s are coming. Then you will be passé too.

When I become "passe'", maybe my ins. rates will drop - they really socked it to me when I added the Genesis.

My VIN says my car is a 2012 when I know it's a 2011. Insurance reports it wrong as a 2012 as well.

on the inside of your drivers door is a built date. When was your car built?

OK. From what i was able to find out the R-Spec has:
Blacked out headlights
19" rims with lo pro tires
stiffer suspension
r-spec badging

My car doesn't have any of those things (its a 5.0 Ultimate) but the vin calls it a r-Spec. this kinda sucks.. i wonder if im paying more for insurance.

Do you have the new tail lights and headlights for 2012? Or other times for 2012? You have a 5.0? OR the 3.8 V6 is NOT GDI? If you do not have these, it is 2011 and can be proved. Might have to get Hyundai involved to send some kind of official notice about your car being 2011. If you have any of the above features, you have a 2012. If you have one of the items above, you will likely have all of them.

In the USA, there was no such thing as the Ultimate Package prior to 2015. The 2012 V8 came standard with the Technology Package included (which automatically includes Premium Package also).

Correct, tail lights would be the easiest way to differentiate a 2011 vs 2012. However, some owners put the 2012 tail lights on their 2009-2011, although I doubt anyone put the 2009-2011 tail lights on a 2012.
