If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

8-Year No-Tow streak over: Major Oil Leak

GENNY IS BACK!!!

It turns out that the O-ring on the drain plug split. While we have put nearly a 1000 miles on the car since the oil change, it seems oil pressure over time worked it over and caused it to fully split. I got a lot of "we're very sorry" and complimentary this and that. I'm just glad that it wasn't anything that required a long shop stay and that it gave up in in the way that it did so there was no engine damage was done from oil starvation.

Sorry for the drama but I share things with my Genesis family. :)
  • There is no o-ring on the drain plug. There is a crush washer (washer made of soft metal) on the drain plug that "could" have split if drain plug over-tightened.
  • Maybe they meant that the o-ring on the oil filter split. If it was an o-ring problem, it was not put on correctly or filter the housing cap was over-tightened.

As usual, great points. I was wondering that. But since I do not have a V6, did not say anything.. To split the crush washer would end up tearing the pan threads up.

Speaking of pan threads.. You think they could have cross threaded the pan? And then re-tapped it? Oh, never mind.

Having done all my own oil changes, I suspect it was that they put on one of the two O-rings incorrectly on the filter housing (or maybe left it off). I don't have a 2015, but I think the housing is pretty much the same (but not identical) as the first generation Genesis (both made by Mahle).

Your V8 (and mine) do, in fact, have a little item called an "oil filter drain bolt" which takes the smaller O-ring. Before removing the filter cap, you are supposed to, at least, remove the little "drain bolt" in the center of the filter cap with a 6 mm hex wrench to facilitate draining residual oil and reduce "slop".

I'm not sure if the V6 has the same arrangement - I think there you just unscrew the filter cap and let the oil go where it wants to go. And all this, while lying on your back.

But I agree - kinda hard to fracture the aluminum crush washer on the primary pan drain plug.

Mark_888, and kn5owa, 👍👍

Oh.. Kn50owa, if I go to the FCC site to renew my ham license, will your letter here show up as your license? :)

+1 on no o ring on the drain plug. But at least is was no too serious and is fixed.

So......what happened to that big puddle of oil on your driveway?

Hey all. I am parroting what the service advisor and manager said and maybe they didn't know the right terminology or I misunderstood what they said. Either way it was something they felt responsible for and fixed quickly. As the Genesis has all kinds of covers and such that shroud the engine belly, I have never seen what the drain plug or anything else below the top of the engine.

As far as the oil in my driveway, my neighbor brought up some stuff they use at his shop to get up grease and oil and it did a good job. There is still a feint blotch about a foot wide and 2 feet long but nothing HOA would be bothered by and I still need to pressure wash my driveway and sidewalks so I'll probably get the rest up then.

Half joking around here..mocking the overlords.... Better watch out, you may need a permit.. And your driveway might be turned into a super fund cleanup.. And look out for criminal charges if you are in a state or national waterway/watershed area.. Which is any ditch, or storm drain these days.. Eventually runs to a creek or discharges someplace. People have been fined thousands for spilling 8oz of gas at a gas station.. Others like dry cleaners have been put out of business for spilling half gallon of dry cleaning agent out the loading dock door.. Come to think of it, ask the mod to delete this post before troll environmental terrorists find this post and ask for a reward as they turn you in...

Again, I have half joking around.. But the other half is what one should be afraid of... :)

They are not to going to tell you the truth, that one of the O-rings was not put on correctly. The O-rings don't break if put on correctly.

Apparently this was in ATL? Which dealer was it?

Agree that it is not hard to fix, but not sure how much oil drained out before it was noticed.

It's all no code now - right?

Yes it is now.. Been thinking of knocking out theory to get advanced. I want my dad's old call sign.. He has passed... I wrote the .gov boys.. They say I still have to have advanced like him. I do not have long before they recycle it back.. Kinda stinks. Only so much time... And Inam not electrical Engineer...

I thought the advanced class was long gone - I'm a dinosaur (in more ways than one). But, if you get an extra class ARRL manual, the question pool comes on a CD which you install on your PC and then you can memorize the answers easily, which is the way it's usually done.

Since this is an oil change thread, I'll say something on topic:

The Hyundai oil/filter setup was designed to facilitate screw-ups by people who may or may not care much about your car. And the 2015 5.0 setup is a further step in that direction (worse).
