  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

In the past couple of weeks I have had the electric system go dead when shutting off my 2009 3.8. Tach stays where it was last, completely dead. Starts immediately with a jump start but I know it is not the battery. Read a thread discussing the rubber grommet and switch under the hood, the grommet is in place. I am assuming it has to be anti-theft related. Next time it happens I am going to open and close the hood to reset the switch but I am looking for a long term solution. Thoughts?

1) Do lights work when battery won't start car?
2) If yes, do lights dim when starter is engaged?
3) If car is driven enough to charge battery, will car start after sitting for an hour?

What year car?
Original battery?
Battery contacts dirty?
Bad cell in battery?

Bill. Car is completely without power. No lights, flashers, anything electric is non functional. Battery is 2 yrs old. I can turn it off immediately after a jump start and have no issues restarting

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
When you turn the car off, can you start it after three hours?.......overnight?.........a few days??
You may have to pay someplace to look at it. They can check for a voltage drain, or a bad cell in the battery.

No offense, but there's a very good chance that you're wrong.

Check the battery. Or at least measure the voltage across the battery terminals and let us know what you find.

The 2009 has a TSB to have the rubber bumper replaced with a larger one. Also check and make sure the negative battery cable is very tightly fastened to the trunk floor.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you all. After inspecting the plug under the hood, which was intact, I did go ahead and replace the battery. It was the OEM, so 6 yrs old. After 5 plus weeks the issue has not returned so the battery was the issue. Thanks for the feedback!

Batteries can suffer internal damage where they become shorted out, not related to normal discharge. It can be fine one moment, and completely dead the next.

It tends to happen more in warmer climates where the battery gets hot, and then suffers some kind of sudden shock (like car hitting a pothole). Happens less on a Genesis due to battery being in trunk, and not near the hot engine.

Some batteries come in North and South editions. The South editions are more robust internally and less likely to suffer heat/shock damage. But this comes at the expense of lower cold cranking amps, since the more robust internal structure leaves less room for the plates and acid.

Same thing was happening on my 2009 Genesis V6 Tech Pkg. Once in every 4 starts or so the car would be completely dead -- no lights, no locks, no juice at all. Would resolve itself after a couple hours on its own. I discovered I could fix it by jiggling the battery wires in the trunk. Took it to Hyundai in San Diego and they could not find the issue though they did witness it. They reseated the battery cables and it's never happened since. Still on factory battery btw.
