  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've always done most maint. on every car I've owned (oil, plugs, plug wires, brake pads/drums, etc..). In other words, the simple stuff.

Quick intro: I have a pre-owned, 2013 GC Base model, that had 20K on it when I bought it, so I have some very general questions:

1. Are the "stock" plugs unique (IOW, 50K-100K spark plugs) or run-of-the mill?
2. Are they difficult to replace on this car? Anything to warn me of before changing them? etc...

3. I'd read (here, I think) that brake changes are pricey ($170 or so....and NO, I don't NEED Brembo brakes, lol)), but I don't recall if that was a dealer-type price, or if it was an actual cost of DIY-type deal? LOL, I'm used to $16-$20 pads for FWD cars...that take 30 minutes or so to replace. Is there a big difference with a GC? My daily beater, a 2000 Accord, is a breeze when it comes to these simple things.

I know I could have googled all of the answers, but would like to hear from DIY owners. I've done this type of simple maint. for both of my sisters (single mothers) for years, but recall offering to change the plugs on my oldest sister's 2006 Honda, and opened the hood....and had a WTF:eek:? moment :-) (the plastic guards, etc., that now seem to be in every modern vehicle.

Any thoughts/comments/advice are appreciated!

The Genesis brakes are ceramic and for oem quality pads will cost $50.00 to $70.00. The plugs on most newer premium brands are Laser Iridium by NGK, Delco, or Denso. The plugs are $6.00 to $10.00 each and do last 80k to 100k miles. I have a 4.6 Sedan and the Brakes are 4 piston and lasted 130,000 miles. Dealer charge on the new front brakes(all parts and labor) on my 4.6 was about $600.00 as recall.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, $600 for front brakes sounds....unreal to me, but I'm sure it's true (older fck here :-)). FWIW, I did just order new tires on-line from Tire Rack; $752 delivered. The most...hell, twice as much...as I've ever spent on tires. I know...cheap bastard, but that's me :-).

Yes, I can afford this car. Yes, I can afford the up-keep. I just wonder how much could be easily done by a true DYI'r, saving a lot...like I always have. OTOH, after 35yrs, I'm no longer a homeowner, and can't do a LOT of "Saturday" projects.

600.00 for front brakes is not too bad considering I will keep the car to 230,000 miles or so and only have had front brakes replaced one time. BTW front rotors for my AMG are 800.00 each or MB OEM for 1100.00 each. So some brakes are very expensive and I also enjoy doing my own maintenance on my cars.

Re-quoting for clarification; are the ceramic pads $50-$70 EACH...or for a pair...or for a set?

Also, the plug price is not too bad (10yrs ago, my oldest son paid $6 each for the RX7 I had bought him).

I'm still hoping someone will chime in who has actually performed these tasks on our cars. I'll gladly pay the price for the pads, but no way in hell would I'd let someone add a couple of hundred dollars to that to perform a simple task like this....IF...it's not really different from most any other car. Know what I mean?

Seriously, an Accord, Camry, Altima, etc., are 30 minute (front wheels) DYI task that requires minimal effort or skill. I taught both sons to do these simple things, so that they can change their own plugs/wires, and change their own brakes for $16-$30, instead of paying a local or national chain for daring to brag (for years!), "$199 per axle!", lol. If you're OK with paying that, then cool. I'm not.

So again, I'm hoping to hear from a member who has done these things with our model(s) so he can advise me of what might be different than when working on other, typical cars, such as I mentioned above.
