If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any issues with HUD on the front windshield with certain types of tint film? B/c my 3.8 is blk/blk, I want to tint the side windows and also the front windshield to cut down on heat. I'm only doing 35% on sides and rear, no limo look for me. I'll do 50-60% up front.

I would be concerned about HUD if you tint your windshield. Also note that applying after-market tint film to a windshield is illegal in all 50 states, unless you have a letter from a physician (except the top 6 inches or so). Another potential problem is inspection stickers, parking stickers, etc.

Not to mention, how do you see properly at night?...bad idea. If anything ever happens and someone gets hurt, a tinted front windshield could put one on the wrong side of a hefty lawsuit, imho!

on other cars I have had the tint has not been an issue with the HUD. That being said I do not have that option on my genesis so I cant really speak to it. I have 5% all around and 15% on my windshield. I have had the tint on nearly every car I have owned for the last 10 years and absolutely love it. I have also been involved in a few accidents over that time and have never had an issue with the legality. It is a risk you take but in my experience most adjusters and officers do not notice it or don't care, and mine is quite obvious. Below is my Genesis and Shelby, both with the same percentages.

I have an almost clear tint on the windshield. I called Texas DMV and they said as long as the legal light transmission through the windshield (I forget the number). The tint is almost clear and anyone that looks at it will not realize the windshield is tinted. The HUD works perfectly.

Here are the exact rules for Texas (Windshield only):

Sunscreening devices can be applied to the windshield if all of the conditions below are met.
  1. Sunscreening devices must be applied above the AS-1 line [approximately top 5 inches]. If there is no AS-1 line, sunscreening devices must end five inches below the top of the windshield.
  2. Sunscreening devices may not be red, amber, or blue in color.
  3. Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a light transmittance value of 25% or more.
  4. Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a luminous reflectance value of 25% or less.
  5. A clear (un-tinted) UV film is allowed anywhere on the front windshield without a medical exemption being required.
So the actual law says if below the AS-1 line (approximate top 5 inches), then it must be a clear un-tinted film with UV protection only. However, it is very hard for anyone to notice a 70+ VLT film as to know whether it is really clear or not.

Actually, the DPS site is in error. The actual laws states that:

"The safety glass used for all vehicle windshields below the AS-1 line must have a 70% light transmission value."
http://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/readtac$ext.TacPage?sl=T&app=9&p_dir=N&p_rloc=155968&p_tloc=&p_ploc=1&pg=3&p_tac=&ti=37&pt=1&ch=21&rl=1
So the combination of factory tint, plus a film, is supposed to be 70% VLT or more, but I doubt anyone would notice a 70% film on top of 10% factory tint (I am not sure what the factory tint is).

It is confusing. The 70% VLT is the correct according to the Texas DMV tint specialist. He agreed that the specs are not as clear as they should be and he is working on correcting that.

yes I'd go 35 all around and 80 up front if i decide I want it.

A local shop has Llumar CXT film, supposedly one of the best in the mkt now? Not cheap, $299 for sides & rear but will check it out.

I guess you mean LLumar CTX Nano-Ceramic. That is a very good film and not a bad price.

The AIR 80 would be ideal on the windshield.
