Crazy Electrical Problem - Odometer Reset

So I've had my Genesis for just two months now. So far I'm loving it and have not had any issues until today.

I started my car this morning leaving the gym. The engine started fine, but I immediately was greeted by some type of warning tone and the entire middle screen in the instrument cluster was blank. The trunk open light was on, the fog light indicator was on (don't have fog lights!) and a number of other warning lights were on.

I left the parking light and the car drove normally other than the lights on and the cluster blank. I indicated a left turn and noticed the turn signal did not blink or turn on at all, even with the lever held down. At this point I was concerned I might not have brake lights in addition to no turn signal, so at the light I shut the car off and restarted.

Everything came back to normal EXCEPT the odometer...it reset to 0 miles! I have driven the car again at lunch and it again was normal but is showing only 5 or so miles. I leased the car so in a way this is good, I just bought myself 2k extra miles, but on the other hand this is a major issue in that my odometer is inaccurate! I have a service appointment tomorrow but I already suspect they won't be able to duplicate.

Anyone had this happen? I'm shocked the odometer would reset itself.

Here is a pic...forgot to mention the right turn signal indicator stayed on but the blinker was not on, and the engine coolant indicated full cold yet the engine was at operating temp. The car really went crazy.

I can see the funny side of this but don't any of you see the seriousness of this? Odometers are not supposed to reset to zero randomly.

OMG, Mama Mia!! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I would cancel the service appointment and wait until you rack up some more miles so they don't get suspicious. You may want to learn how to do your oil changes if this keeps up, so the dealer doesn't try and reset your odometer to an estimated value.

The correct mileage should still be saved in the car's computers (usually in multiple locations). Hopefully they can restore it without having to claim "not actual mileage" on the title.

StarPower is correct. There is a secure memory log for actual mileage that cannot be reset, so any discrepancy between the displayed and logged reading could definitely cause problems later on. Get it fixed ASAP is my suggestion.

Is someone really going to check the computer to see if it agrees with the odometer display?

It will likely be reported as an error condition as soon as the dealer plugs in their computer to the car.

Standard practice for dealers and lease companies, at least in Canada.

Belfor, everything you described in your thread happened to me on Thursday, 10/01/15. I also own a 2015 2G Genesis 3.8 (tech package). I've had my vehicle for a week now. My odometer originally read 273mi. It reset to 0mi. My current mileage is now 110mi. That's what I've driven since the error/reset. What was the outcome of your service appointment? I'm planning to take my car back to the dealership to reconcile my true mileage, 383mi.

I went to my dealership yesterday and they ordered the cluster tech line part(s) which they will replace to remedy this problem. They stated they will reconcile my true odometer mileage after the fix. I'll post another update after the repair is complete.

Update on this, the dealer called and they will replace the cluster. The kicker is they project it will take a full week, the old cluster has to be sent out to be programmed side by side with the new cluster, then the new programmed cluster has be shipped to the dealer for installation.

Not too pleased at this point as my car will have been out of service for a total of 10 days in two and half months. I'm really hoping this is not indicative of my ownership experience--I think my last 10+ years of lexus ownership combined had less days of warranty service work as this car already has!

No solution yet but similar issue. Our 2015 v6 Genesis w/tech pkg was in for regular oil change at 12,000km (Canadian eh!) and when it was returned the odometer was reset to '0'. No other obvious electrical issues - all panel lights and gauges work as expected. Dealer replaced the entire instrument cluster panel but still no odometer reading. The dealer spoke with Hyundai Canada's top technical staff and followed their instructions. Still no go. We are now waiting for Dealer to continue repair efforts and return our vehicle in working condition. At our insistence, the Dealer is paying for our rental vehicle while we wait. If repairs cannot be made shortly we expect to request a replacement vehicle at no additional cost to us. I will post the final outcome when done.

So looks like this is becoming a known failure. I count at least 4 people on these forums where this has happened.

In my case the dealer had to send the new cluster out to a shop in Michigan where they re-programmed the cluster with the estimated mileage. The new cluster, as you would expect, comes with the mileage at 0.

I've driven about 1,500 miles since having a new cluster installed and the problem has not recurred, but it is still early.
