  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

4.6 2011 or 2012

I have both the 6sp and 8sp and drive them on weekly bases. Here is my thoughts (for what its worth):

1 - The dead pedal / engine issue was present to some degree on both cars but more so on the R-Spec (but I had to intentionally recreate the issue)
2 - The flapper / magnet weakening marginally helped.
3 - Having installed the rigid collar on both cars and in both cases, they eliminated the delay issue completely, as I am unable to create the issue on either vehicle
4 - The 8sp is a tad more responsive / sporty.
5 - The 6sp is tad smoother during gear changes.
6 - The 6sp changes gears in 650ms while the 8sp is around 500ms (ie the 8sp is measured to be 15%).

Which one I like better? The answer is both, I love to drive the family around in the 6sp (4.6) on weekends and long trips, however, the 8sp (R-Spec) is my favorite for keeping my neck muscles in tiptop condition.

Hope this helps...

Wow thank you! Pardon my ignorance, but what is the desired effect of installing a rigid collar?

Well guys, after careful consideration I've made a decision. I'm going with the 2011. There appear to be real advantages to both, but the comments here and in the "dead pedal" thread scared me too much away from the 2012 transmission. It also looks like the fix worked for some, and did not work well for many others. Buying a car that I plan to drive past 200,000 miles, I just can't afford to take the risk.

Thank you BIG TIME to everyone who posted here with their insightful opinions. This was a very tough decision, and I'm still very excited to move forward with my purchase. I will post pictures as soon as I decide on "the one". Color preferences are black or titanium exterior with a saddle or cashmere interior.

Thank you again!!!!!!

Ryan

You chose... wisely.

Ignorance is Bliss

This is the first I've heard that the 12-14 audio was "detuned". It is widely known that the Gen 2 Genesis audio was detuned (less bass and volume).

Are you sure about the 12-14? Mine sounds fantastic and can't imagine that, at near full volume, would be equivalent to 20-22 (out of 44) on the 09-11.

I've posted a hand-full of times on this subject. I've owned both the original '09 full-monty Tech with the 17 Lexicon, and the 2012 V8 (which is Tech by default).

I'm particular about my audio, and the difference is significant. The clarity, imaging and dynamic range (bass "punch") in the original '09 system is superior to the '12.

That system was one of the best audio systems I've ever listened to.... anywhere, in any form. It also had the tendency for the amp to randomly go silent every couple months, requiring either a fuse-pull or 20 mins with ignition off to reset. Damn thing would take your lollipop away.

If you can find an '09 Tech, bring along a DVD-A and try it. You'll be surprised...

Or don't... and stay blissfully ignorant with your gen 1.5. :D

Did the 09 use the same rear 8 inch sub-woofer as the 12? Speakers are the same, it was just a matter of electronics calibration?

From a dead stop, it's fine because the transmission is already in 1st. If traveling, say, 30 mph and slowing down, the transmission will want to hold onto 3rd. Coming to an intersection, if you roll through it and hit the gas, there will be a delay before full power comes on. It's only an issue if traffic is coming and want to accelerate very quickly, right now.

I've had my car for about a year and a half and have learned to live with it.

My wife has driven it many times and always gushes over the power and smoothness. And she normally drives a Lexus.

Many posts on the "dead pedal" subject were by new Rspec owners doing exactly this scenario. This effect was also exacerbated in the higher torque 5.0. Turning made it worse as the stability-nanny would pre-empt wheel spin and cut throttle.

You can make a 4.6 do it, but you really have to try. It also depends a lot on your tires. Crappy tires will break loose before the torque gets high enough for the nanny to kick in.

My take: the original '12 TCU and ESC software was a bit too twitchy in the 5.0s, and Hyundai toned it down with TCU updates.

Well this happened much sooner than I expected, but I am the proud owner of a brand new (ok used) 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 V8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent 14 hours today at dealerships across the state of North Carolina. I was not intending to buy just yet, but when I test drove a Genesis with 32,800 on the odometer immaculate inside and out, I couldn't help but initiate the sales conversation. The car was gorgeous, the price was right, and the deal is done.

I drove almost three hours home from the dealership, and this is by far the best car I've ever driven. The smooth power is equal parts scary and exhilarating, as I multiple times found myself softly gliding at 80+ with no complaint from the engine whatsoever. This was going uphill in the mountains, and I thought I was driving 55.

All I can saw is wow, and thank you to everyone who helped with the decision. I owe this forum a debt of gratitude, and I am honored to now be part of this special club.

Congratulations.....you will love this car. Was it a CPO? Did you get an extended warranty? The pics are ready nice. Looks beautiful. Enjoy your new ride.

Your matriculation is now complete ... may the journey begin!

Don't forget to change your tag line:

Thanks guys! Pete, this one was not a CPO and I haven't gotten an extended warranty yet. The car was a local trade in at a GMC dealership, and it was the first day on the lot. They didn't even have pics up online yet. I paid $20,350 plus tax, which I thought was a fair deal. My target for a 4.6 Genesis at this mileage was $20k flat, but the car had so clearly been well taken care of that I thought the final price was reasonable for all parties.

Here are a few more pics.

Very nice. Easy color to keep clean looking. All it needs now are the wing caps on the wheels.

Nicky done, may you have a long, enjoyable and trouble free motoring...

I would recommend to get the extended warranty as subsequent owners will only get five years, 60k power train warranty.

Yeah, I'm in a bit of a tricky situation with the warranty. The 5 year, 60k warranty expires in August of next year. The good news is that I drive about 25k miles per year so I'll get almost full use out of the warranty. The bad news is that I drive about 25k miles per year, so a new extended warranty is only likely to be good for about two additional years max at a high cost.

The other part of the calculus is that my driving is 90% highway cruising, which puts minimum stress on the power train. I think I'm going to stop by the Hyundai dealer and see what my options would be, especially because there is a lot that can break in this car.

Since you said North Carolina.. why don't you come out and join GenSport United for the 6th Annual Fall Run on the Dragon to really get a feel for your new Sedan?

Tailwalker, LandoAWD and myself will be out there, we would love more GenSedans to join us.

It's 10/1 thru 10/4 at Fontana Resort in Fontana, NC, don't have to stay the whole time, some people just drop in for a day or two.

I would love to Fordman, especially as it appears we have near identical cars! Unfortunately I'm going to be in Virginia that weekend. As an aside I'm still learning how to handle the combination of the car's size and power, so I may not be quite ready yet for the Dragon.

Homeofstone, wheel caps are on order!

Wish I could join 'yall, but it's a bit of a drive for me to get there these days. :(
