If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Guys with the 3.8

Does anyone get a engine tap for a second or so during a cold start up?
My car has 250 miles on it

I've been experiencing this as well. I was thinking it may be the gas I was using. Since I got the car in Jan '09 (1800 miles) I only put Premium or Plus in the car and I never had an issue. This past week I put regular in and I started hearing what I believe is valve tapping.

After I'm finished with this tank of gas, I'm going back to Premium.

Not sure what gas has to do with it unless the engine is pinging due to pre-detonation (doubtful). Probably engine is oil starved because oil filter drains back into crankcase after shutdown (my oil level shows 3/4 quart overfill after a few hours). I have switched to synthetic and do not hear the valve taping, but I didn't hear it when I had factory fill for first 1500 miles either (but wasn't really listening for it).

I've noticed the engine sounds a little more vocal in colder temperatures. Not sure if I'd describe it as a tap or ping, but it is there. FWIW, I only notice it at the Starbucks drive-thru when my window is down and it seems to be running fine so I'm not going to worry too much. FWIW, my 2006 Pilot made a similar noise in colder weather, at least until the engine had warmed up. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running mid-grade 89 octane Shell/Chevron gasoline in my Genesis (I know regular is recommended and I'm probably wasting my money, but I'm more comfortable w/ mid-grade).

Overall though, I have to say I've been VERY impressed w/ the 3.8's combination of refinement, power and fuel-efficiency. This is probably the best V6 engine I've experienced....I'd say it approaches BMW's inline six engines in terms of lack of vibration/refinement at higher revs. If only the damn Aisin auto didn't shift well short of redline. :(

It could very well be the sound of the Fuel Injectors. Many cars exhibit a slight "tapping" sound from the fuel injectors. I had an Acura that did this. It was definitely more pronounced when it was cold out than when it was warm. Sounded a bit like valves tapping, but, the volume was too low to be valves. In any case, you should have your service department verify the sound you are hearing. That is what the warranty is all about.

My dealer didn't really know what the sound was when I took it in, but they said the it most likely is the fuel injectors. (4.6L)

Its only when you first start it up then it goes away. It only last a second or two. It sounds like the engine is starved for oil for a second. I was just asking if anyone else has experienced it and if it is "normal" . I know it was considered "normal" on my Mercedes during a cold start up

My V6 has the same noise on start-up from cold. It is definitely tappet noise due to oil starvation. I mentioned it to my dealer but they didn't seem too concerned.

As I already mentioned above, the oil filter on the V6 drains back into the crankcase and the engine could be oil-starved at startup. I mentioned in another thread that my oil fill level reads about 3/4 quart high when the car has been sitting for short time and the oil has drained from the filter.

Personally, I have not heard the noise on my V6, bu I switched to a full synthetic at 1500 miles, so that may minimize the problem. Maybe if I had the hood open and stood next to the engine when someone else started it I could hear more noise.

Wonder if I sould use a half of quart of Lucas Oil Treatment? I use it in my streetrod and when I change the oil. it comes out extremely slippery

Don't do it! Lucas products are modern-day snake oil IMO. A good quality oil has all the additives you need. I would recommend switching to synthetic (Castrol Edge, Valvoline SYNPower, or Mobil 1).

ANYONE CONSIDERING LUCAS OIL STABILIZER, PLEASE READ:

I need something. This engine tapping during start up is embarassing. How long does the engine have to "break in" before I can go to synthetic? I think Im gonna do synthetic, but change just the filter at around 3,800 miles, then change oil and filter at 7,500 miles

I switched to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20 at 1500 miles.

It's really old-school, but, before going and changing oils, if it truly is valve tapping you are hearing, the easiest test is this:

Add some STP oil Treatment to the oil when you first turn it on, while it is cold and making the sound. If it is lifters are tapping because they are dry, they should quiet up pretty quickly. If the STP does not make a difference, the noise is almost definitely the fuel injectors.

Just a thought and it will only set you back a couple bucks.

Old school is right. That may have worked for Fred Flinstone, but I don't think that works on all modern engines. Besides, everyone says the noise goes away after a few seconds--not enough time for the STP to reach the valves.

Changing to synthetic is a good idea IMO, regardless of the source of the noise, so it's not money wasted.

I experienced this tapping noice for the first time today after about 9500 miles--Started Sunday afternoon and last drove Friday evening. Have left far longer before and never noticed this tapping. Did not stop after a few seconds and I shut her down. Guess will try running a bit, but going to dealership. Does not seem like normal operation from decades of prior cars. Like the car--but definitely strange noise.

When I first bought my 2012 I didn't like the noise coming from the engine bay either. Sounds like a quick clicking or "tapping." I made them pull up another new V6 before I made my purchase, and the other car made the same sound. I still was not satisfied that this was normal and spoke to a tech from the service dept. The sound does quiet once the car is warmed for me. The GDI engines make some noise from the injectors and the way they deliver fuel.

Where the oil filter is located has no effect on weather the engine is or isn't starved of oil on start-up. The oil also drains into the crankcase on a vehicle with the filter located on the bottom as opposed to the top. Both application remain to get their oil from the crankcase. The oil filter is only design to filter the oil, not store it. Give it some thought and I think you all will agree.

IMHO

Yes, the oil drains into the crankcase either way, but if the oil filter is on top, it also drains out of the oil filter, and if on the bottom it stays in the oil filter. I am not sure how that affects engine start-up (and may not affect every engine the same way), but with an empty oil filter at start-up, it takes longer for the filter to produce oil on output from the filter, even after oil has been input into the filter. Whether that is detrimental is debatable.

The oil filter by no means produces oil pressure, the oil pump located in the crankcase does. The oil is pumped to the engine porting and channels on it way UP to the oil filter location, not from the filter down to to engine, therefor there is no difference in the process. As you stated you are unsure of the long term outcome, I am sure the Hyundai designers and research personnel and engineers are well versed in the structural mechanics of how an engine really works and are quit assured that there is no difference in the operation of the engine what so ever. In short it makes NO DIFFERENCE when talking about ENGINE NOISE at START UP. That is the subject of this particular form.
