I will be going from my 2002 Acura TL that I bought new to the Genesis. The Acura was well known to have transmission issues and I am on my third one on it so possible transmission issues are something that is on my mind.

I came from a 2004 Maxima which I loved but it too had transmission issues (actually valve body solenoids issues) so I can relate. This one on the genesis seems very smooth and I haven't heard of too many issues. That and rust complaints are the first things I looked for when looking to a car to buy.

The wife and I finally got out and looked at a few cars this past week-end. Are there any advantages/drawbacks of a 2013 over a 2012 other than just the 2013 being one year newer? Future resale value is irrelevant as I normally keep a car until no one but a junk yard would want it. Still kind of leaning towards the 2011 year though because of the possible transmission issues although Aquineas said that he had better results from the 2012 than the 2011.

I think the only difference was a software update and blue link. I personally would have only bought one cause it was newer, but all the ones I saw oddly had much higher mileage than the 2012 models. *shrug*

The 2012 has bluetooth for the phone, but you can't stream music thru it, you need to get a second bt receiver. I think they added that to the 2013.

I just picked up a 2012 V6. From my reading, the key changes in 2012 were:

1) SACHS Amplitude Selective Damping shocks (to solve ride/handling issues discussed in several magazine road tests)

2) 8-speed tranny for smoother shifting and better MPG (as smooth as my BMW 5)

3) Direct Injection on the V6 for better economy and power, resulting in the 333 hp. Simply a much more modern engine.

In discussing these changes with Hyundai people at the recent LA Auto Show, this is what "refined" the already good Genesis.

On the Bluetooth issue mentioned above, the 2012 with base package does, indeed, do both Bluetooth phone and music. It also does voice navigation, etc. from an iPhone. A little trick is that if the iPhone is plugged in to the multi-jack cable, you have to have the radio on CD/AUX to hear the navigation, etc. But if you simply stream Bluetooth, the voice prompts come through with anything selected. You can always simply plug the iPhone power cable into a usb/cigar lighter power supply for longer trips.

Let me clarify then, the Tech package in 2012 does not do streaming BT. I would know.

I just picked up a 2012 V6. From my reading, the key changes in 2012 were:

From 2009-2014, the Genesis has always had SACHS Amplitude Selective Damping shocks in the rear (and struts in front). The difference is that they made major changes to the spring and shock/struts rates in 2012 for a more comfortable ride, but giving up a little bit of handling. If you looked at the suspension parts from any year from 2009-2014, it would be difficult to tell them apart (with possible exception of the rear stabilizer bar, which starting in 2012 is bigger diameter, but is hollow instead of solid).

Hyundai switched from 6-speed transmissions (from ZF on V8 and Aisin on V6), to the Hyundai 8-speed in 2012 because of better MPG with 8-speed, and because it reduces the total cost of the car to use an in-house product, rather than source from the outside. Just looking at the retail cost of these transmissions (if you had to buy one out of warranty) the difference is huge (the old ones are much more expensive). Hyundai could have used the latest ZF 8-speed, but chose to develop their own.

That's right, owning a fully equipped one, the only 2 features I feel are missing for no good reason are BT music streaming (although I use a 32GB flash drive anyway) and blind spot detection (the sensors are there, dammit!). Still great cause of everything else though.
