  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Chrome side trim on 3.8

Thanks for the reminder, Ernie.

Is this the correct 3M tape to use?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181266780149

Thank you,
-Jason

Sorry, don't know what specific 3M tape to use. Your dealer or a body shop guy would know. Mostly the clips hold the trim in, but there are some very narrow double-sided tape strips in there too. You'll have to cut them to size.

I have a 12 Rspec and I just had all my chrome trim covered with gloss black vinyl and it looks so much more aggressive!

Please post pictures!

Did you do every single bit of chrome?

Including the grill? I'm a little hazy on how vinyl wrap can be applied to such complex geometry...

Thanks,
-Jason

Anyone in SoCal interested in swapping I have the 2013 White Satin Pearl looking for the chrome pieces?

I didn't have the door handles, the edges of the grill or the window trim covered. Just the trim on the sides, bumpers and trunk.

[Hrm, I don't seem to be getting e-mail notifications of updates to this thread to which I'm subscribed--must look into this.]

Jerryss: He popped off his 2011 black trim easily, put up a little YouTube video showing it (linked to here: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=13792 ). They're in the mail on the way. It's a busy week for me, but I'll try to do a quick swap this weekend & take pics.

PMCErnie: Quick internet searches seem to reveal that there's pretty much just 1 3M double-sided auto tape out there--the only variations are 6mm wide vs. 10mm wide, & length of roll. I bought a 3-pack of 10mm-wide tape, also in the mail on its way to me.

Unevakno: Wow, your car looks tough! Love it! Odd--I don't have a winged badge on the hood portion of my grill--and did you take the rear R-spec badge & stick it on the grill? My grill doesn't have that either. (Mine's a 2012 R-spec.)

Thanks,
-Jason

Finished the trim swap with Jerryss. It went pretty smoothly.

Lessons learned:

1 - Invest in a set of trim removal tools. I've used these many times for interior trim work (pulling apart dash, console, etc.). Very handy. I think my set is a cheap Harbor Freight set, & I don't see a need to buy a fancy set.

2 - If you remove trim & plan on re-attaching it (to your car or another), inspect the underside of the trim carefully. Each clip's T shape is captured in between 2 L shapes on the back side of the trim. When you pry off the trim, the weak point seems to be where the L features meet the trim. On the chrome pieces that I removed from my car, almost all of the L features broke significantly--a few came off altogether. On the black pieces that Jerryss removed, the breakage was significantly less.

3 - To be safe, before shipping Jerryss his chrome pieces, I used plastic epoxy to repair the L shapes & bonded in the clips to add support. These are solid now!

4 - The chrome pieces on my 2013 had thin strips of double-sided tape along the top & bottom of each trim piece. It took *a lot* of force to remove them. I had to take care to not snap the trim itself in the process, by using the pry tools & prying right up against where the trim was still attached (vs. pulling on the very end of the trim piece). The body-colored trim that ahs been pulled off of other cars (per this & Jerryss' thread) seems to have come off much more easily--Jerryss's black trim had just 1 strip of 1-sided foam padding along the top, which came off cleanly & stayed attached to his black trim. My chrome pieces' 2 strips of tape partly stuck to the trim & partly to the car when I removed them.

5 - The 3M tape that I bought worked great. I could have used 6 mm wide instead of the 10 mm that I bought. The stock tape is only maybe 2-3 mm wide.

Enjoy the pics.
Thanks,
-Jason

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
PS--maybe I'm still coming down off my Comic-Con high, but the chrome trim door pieces look as if they would make *awesome* katana swords! Go with long or short (front or back doors), trim the clip-holding features on the back sides of the trim, & glue 2 parts together. They actually look really wicked!

Mr. "Visitor", are you kidding? To throw that kind of commentary at one of the members is out of line and unwarranted.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, however to blast another for taking time to personalize their vehicle in their own way will never be accepted.

How about sending some pics of your "beauty"? Oh, be sure to give it its annual wash so we'll know what color it is.

This is an inside joke, right?

I seem to recall that Visitor works in an auto upholstery shop. Those glue fumes can be dangerous.

That looks like trash.

Thank you. I appreciate your opinion. I will make sure to share it with the next person that takes a picture of the car. Feel welcome to post pictures of your car sir. I also wanted to thank the members that responded.

Jason, Thank you for the positive comments. I have since then removed the badges from the grill but the car has always had the original R spec badge on the trunk. I purchased 2 more and had them clear coated to protect the finish.
If you still have the black side trim I can meet you and swap for the OEM chrome on my car. The vinyl peels off easily.

Re: Chrome side trim on 3.8 - Jason and My Swap

So, I FINALLY posted a picture of my 2011 after Jason and I swapped Chrome / Black trims. While Jason went all black, I seem to be going more chrome, with my 19" wheels and now the Chrome Trim. ( I also tinted the car 20%)

Jason did a spectacular job in fixing the chrome trim's clips that broke when he removed it from his car. We both discovered the chrome trim is much less forgiving than the black (flexible) trim.

Anyway, here's a pic of my car with the new chrome trim. Jason and my swap worked out great!! And we both got what we wanted, and only paid shipping.

If anyone else tries it, it's a good swap!!

Jerry

I'm still waiting on your info to get this done and in the mail.

I am reviving this thread, but has anyone tried to replace the rear chrome strips? I have received mine today but it does not have the same clip system as the pictures/videos I have seen from the side strips.

I got my chrome side trim strips on eBay for about $100. They came with adhesive on the backside and I just stuck them over the existing body colored trim. You can't tell the difference.
