If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 2012 automatic transmission shifting issues

Just dropped off my 2012 3.8 tech (68000 mi) with the dealer today for this issue. The dealer was able to replicate the problem a few months ago and flashed the tranny computer which fixed it for a while.

When I went thru this (I think I was one of the first), flashing the transmission just made it worse for me. I remember I couldn't duplicate it properly at first, but as it gradually got worse, it wasn't to hard to make it do it for the tech. They never could tell me what was wrong, just here's your new tranny. Good news is, close to 50K miles later, it's still rock solid!

Even though I still haven't seen the issue for at least 2 weeks, I guess the dealer seeing it once when I had it in 2 weeks ago was good enough. I dropped the car off yesterday so that they could have the car and drive it while talking to Hyundai corporate (who apparently has to approve transmission replacements under warranty).

They're going to replace the transmission. Done late Friday at earliest, more likely next Tuesday.

Now I have to drive this 4 cylinder Sonata until then. This car would not compete well with the Accord/Camry.

Got the car back yesterday, so far no problems. After driving the Santa Fe for a week I realized how much I missed the Genny. Good to have it back. Hopefully my tranny lasts for another 50k miles as well. I plan on keeping the car for a while.

Yeah, when mine was laid up a while, courtesy of a to-close encounter with a deer, driving that little Nissan rental really made me appreciate mine when I got it back!

they ordered my transmission last Friday and they still don't have it. I made them get the UPS number, and it's gonna be at least 2 more days. Sigh. I'm going to get my Genesis so I don't have to drive this terrible Sonata. Even my kids complain about it.

This is really turning me negative on Hyundai.

I have my car at Hyundai dealer this week and they can't find the issue. Exact same issue as you all describe....Not under warranty though....Should I just go ahead and replace the transmission? Not sure the cost....

Since they never could tell me what was wrong, I have no idea if it's repairable or not. Replacing it won't be cheap, I'm sure. I'd start looking online at bone-yards to see what's available and how much.

Don't replace something like this if you can't reproduce the problem.

I was carrying around my GoPro to try to catch this issue. You could do the same with your phone (I didn't as work required a fast screenlock and a freaking 8 digit passcode on the cell phone). Just be sure to catch the tack on your video and try to remember what gears you're in.

thought I'd post an update. Note: 2013 Genesis sedan v6.

AFter they initially saw proof of the problem, they wanted to have the car for a whole day. I scheduled that on a Wednesday. THey did multiple test drives with a computer hooked up and talked to Hyundai Corporate. Corporate has to approve a transmission replacement under warranty.

Then came my favorite thing about Hyundai. The dealers don't stock a lot of parts, and it takes a while to get them. They ordered it on Wednesday. Hyundai first said "we don't have a transmission in the U.S." then shipped the part from California on Friday. Part arrived next Wednesday. They installed on Thursday.

It's a remanufactured transmission.

I found the notes on the invoice interesting:
---------------------
C/S RPMs rev up between shifts 4500r00 4500r33 95440f77

2.6 C/S flared shift. verified vehicle has flared shift. usually between 3-4. Graphed GDS data and found shift to take 2.7 seconds due to internal fault in transmission assembly. replaced transmission, flushed cooler, reset adaptive values, and performed ECU update per campaign #14-AT-002 and test drive vehicle to verify proper operation.
------------------------

I expressed displeasure at getting a remanufactured transmission, but noted that I understood this wasn't a dealer policy.

The guy starts to explain how this is normal, but then I asked him if the other 2 parts replacements done on my car since I got it were remanufactured and he stopped talking. The service manager was nice during this whole process; my issues weren't with him. They're with Hyundai.

But then the guy next to him starts to talk about the transmission. "Only the housing is re-used, all the parts inside are new etc. etc." He stopped when I started quizzing him about the training he'd undergone about Hyundai part services and Hyundai warranty/service policy in order to gain this knowledge.

So it was a good day. I'm no longer driving that damn 4 cylinder loaner Sonata that even my children complained about.

Hi guys! I joined this forum due to the exact issue in the original post of this thread. Basically, the car will work fine for days, then it will randomly start having what appears to be transmission issues, particularly between the 1st-2nd gear shift, and the 2nd-3rd gear shift. Like when it tries to shift to the next gear, something doesn't catch, and the RPM revs up extremely high, then the entire car stutters hard trying to get it in gear. I've found that if I let off the gas when the RPM's go up, it doesn't jerk the car, but it is a major, major hassle.

I've taken it into the dealer twice now (one time I barely was able to get the car to the dealer due to the issues), and neither time could they "reproduce" the issue and therefore did no work on it. It also seems to be more common at night for whatever reason, usually on my drive home from work.

This is super annoying, and I am at 55,600 miles, so getting close on my warranty. Do you guys have any tips on what I can tell the dealer technicians about this? I'm scared about hitting 60k with this issue. Thanks!

2012 3.6 Genesis.

I spent about 15k miles telling service about the issue and they could never reproduce it. I brought videos in and everything but they said they have to have it do it and have it connected to the computer so they can send for warranty. Finally they got it. Warranty on drive train is 100k. I'm at 90k. They were on back order and had me in a new Genesis for two months and they finally gave me a new one because they couldn't get a reman trans. Just make sure every time you go in you have nite the account of the issues so if u go over warranty you can fight it that it was there earlier.

Another genesis owner transmission issue here. My car is at the dealership just authorized for new transmission. 31k
Hopefully these remanufactured transmission will have success. maximo

Wakeupson
I just deleted my videos I might see I can get them back but mine would jump from 2-5 rpms if I didn't not take my foot off the gas and sometimes get close to redline. Sometime it would shift smooth the next time it would feel like the back end would come out during the shift.
So here is the next one. Now I have a recall on my wiper motor oh I already replaced it and paid $600 for it and how I explain what it was doing to the dealer is exactly how the letter describes the issue. Let's see if they will pay me back on this one.

Had the same thing with mine at about 25/30K miles. Got 70K on it now, and the replacement transmission has been flawless.

My 2012 3.8 Genesis is at the Dealer now to determine if I need a new transmission.. From a standstill; mostly in stop and go traffic, my RPM would go from 1000 to 3500 and then back to 1000 and give a banging jerk. Once it was so bad the ESC light flickered. Hopefully they will give me the new transmission. My Mileage is 67,000 and I have the 100,000 power train warranty. The Dealer gave me an Elantra as a loaner until they determine what they will do.

Perfect description of what mine did.

Amartz, good to here your transmission is working well. One less thing to worry about. Got mine back and so far so good. I forgot how great the shift is when working right. Maximo
