Slipping transmission

The reason I ask is that when the Genesis is out of warranty, when the transmission takes a dump, is there any other option other than sending 10,000 dollars to Hyundai to put a new one in?

I don't really know the answer to that one. But there are probably a fair number of transmissions sitting in junkyards where cars got totaled and the transmission is OK.

Keep in mind that so far, the Genesis sedan has used 3 different transmissions:

• 2009 - 2011 V6 - Aisin 6-speed. Aisin was created as a joint venture between Toyota and Borg-Warner to build RWD transmissions for use in Lexus and other brands. The Aisin used in the Genesis has been used in many different brands.
• 2009 - 2011 V8 - ZF 6-speed. ZF is German company that makes transmissions for many brands, including BMW's
• 2012-2016 Genesis (V6 and V8) - Hyundai 8-speed transmission.

I suspect that transmission repair shops in the US would have a hard time repairing the Hyundai 8-speed transmission, just because of lack of familiarity with it, since very few are out of warranty yet.

I bought my Genesis from CarMax with 25k miles on it. I have factory warranty to 60k miles. I did have the forethought to buy a MaxCare plan that covers everything to 125k miles or 5 years and has no deductible per visit. My dealer is more than happy to honor the warranty when the time comes. The way I drive I'll be there in 3 years anyway. At that point my plan is to buy another Genesis or who knows what Hyundai will come out with before then.
There is no way I would buy an car like this, where major components cost an arm and part of a leg, and not have my hiney covered.

I mentioned the transmission issue, and the hard shifts, when I took the Genesis in for the last oil change this past week. We have an appointment scheduled after the 4th of July, where I'm going to take it in, they are going to have someone drive it for a day to test the transmission, and give me a vehicle to drive for day (be nice if it's the 2015 Genesis they haven't been able to sell) and then I pick up my car the next day. I'll see what they say, and if they recognize the hard shifting, and go from there.

Left mine with the dealer yesterday for the transmission replacement. They gave me a 2016 Genesis (black) to drive. How sweet it is!!! Life's good.

With any luck maybe my dealer will let me drive a 2G Genesis for the day they will be driving mine to test for the transmission issues.

After the dealer test drove my car, that has been at the dealership for 2.5 months getting it's 3rd short block engine, the now say it needs CVT gears. I have no idea what that is. The engine works fine now but they say they noticed some shuddering during take off so they are replacing those. Hope they don't come at me with "we actually need to replace your transmission now", cause I don't know how to feel about not having my car back.

Are any of the short block engines possibly rebuilt engines taken out of other vehicles under warranty that have had short block engine replacements? Or are they brand new engines? I've seen some references here to transmission replacements that are sometimes rebuilt rather than brand new transmissions

...continuing with the hijack... a "short block rebuild" can be anything from simply changing piston rings to bore/hone of the block + replacement of most or all of the moving parts. The good-ol boys on "Engine Power" will teach you

Got my car back today after two days at the dealership for a transmission replacement. I did notice on the service ticket that the transmission is a remanufactured unit. Doesn't matter as long as it does the job. Runs like a top now.

I also had them look into the flapping sound at high speed that has always sounded like it is coming from the front passenger wheel well. Mechanic found that the mud flap (I take that to mean the inner liner of the fender well) was slightly loose. Problem seems to be solved. Thought I would mention that because I have seen others post about the mysterious and hard to locate flapping sound. Drove me crazy too but now it seems to be gone.

Just hope I'm done with the troubles for a while now.
