If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. A rock hit the windshield on my Genesis today. It is the lower part of the windshield and is about 1.5" in diameter. Anyone have any experience with a Genesis windshield replacement? I have an ultimate, so I assume it has a special windshield for the HUD and the other sensors behind the mirror.

I have the first generation sedan and I had no issues with my replacement.

Looks like there are two windshields for the 2015-2016 Genesis:

  • Without Lane Departure Warning 86111-B1000 - MSRP $890.03
  • With Lane Departure Warning 86111-B1030 - MSRP $1,867.31
These items can be purchased online from Hyundai dealers for at least a 25% discount to the above MSRP.

So looks like Tech and Ultimate packages share the same windshield.

Your insurance company will probably point you to a third party installer who will use OEM equipment at a price significantly lower than a dealer installation.

What he said.^^^

I don't think dealers install windshields, they just sell the OEM parts. They certainly don't have much, if any, experience installing them. Even if a dealer took the business, they would probably outsource it to a windshield replacement shop and markup the price.

But the only place to get the OEM parts is from a Hyundai dealer, unless some glass shops have an arrangement to get them from HMA.

Obviously, on popular cars, there are aftermarket windshield parts available, but not sure about the Genesis.

1) Correct, the dealer would outsource the installation
2) Third party installers (ie., Safelite, EZAutoGlass, etc) obtain the windshiled from a Hyundai distributor
3) Insurance companies typically get three prices from "authorized installers" of their choice and let you pick one
4) I've had this done on a Jag and Infiniti. In each case the insurance company would pay no more than the median price obtained from the quote of the three installers they chose (hundreds of $ less than the dealer would have charged)
5) The third party installers did a fine job and used OEM windshields

There is only one USA distributor, and that is Hyundai Motor America. But I don't know if they distribute parts to anyone but Hyundai dealers. Maybe or maybe not.

For a Hyundai made in the USA (Sonata, Elantra, etc), that is probably different, as the windshield is probably made in the USA and "might be" sourced by glass shops from the OEM part supplier, or even a third party supplier if the car is popular enough.

I just had one hit my windshield (very low on the windshield) a couple weeks ago. I posted about the process in one of the threads....I think the "What did you do in your Genesis today" thread.

Anyway...did you already contact your insurance company and have them send someone to see if it can be filled instead of having to replace the windshield? I have Geico and called them and they work with Safelight. They sent the Safelight guy out same day and he looked at it and said that it was pretty big, but probably fixable so he would try. Anyway it took him about 20 minutes and then he examined it after he did everything he could and said that it was "fixed". Now if it spreads or cracks anymore Safelight is on the hook and will pay for a new windshield. The whole process didn't cost me a penny. I didn't have to pay for the Safelight guy, didn't have to pay my deductible, and my insurance rate won't go up because it's a no fault "claim".

The Safelight guy said that every major car insurer in the US does this except for State Farm.

I think I had to pay an extra charge to get no deductible windshield coverage from State Farm. Before I owned my Genesis, it was not worth getting that coverage since my previous windshield replacements were only about $300. But I got the extra coverage for the Genesis windshield from State Farm.

You could very well be right. I should have qualified it by saying that the Safelight guy said rock/crack fixing was included for free with all major insurers except State Farm.

Insurance is covering the repair. I initially tried to get a repair to my existing windshield, but the crack spread and is not 1' long, so I have to go with the replacement. I specified OEM glass and safelight will probably be the ones installing it. I then have to have the clear tint reapplied (insurance covers this) and the lane departure system then needs recalibrating by the dealer.

What effect does the clear tint film have on the Heads Up Display?

I did difference with the HUD and windshield film applied. The tint shop said theire wouldn't be and I agree.

Based on the posts above, there isn't a difference in windshield part number with/without HUD?

lobsenza, just out of curiosity, where were you in the Austin area when the damage was incurred?

my windshield has been replaced and on the old one there were marks that it is solar, durable, soundproofing and etc.
on the new one there is also a mark HUD on it.
My HUD works well on both, but it seems there are different types for HUD and without

It is possible that the there is something in the LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System) windshield for HUD, but in the USA the same windshield is used for both the Tech Package and Ultimate, even though HUD is NOT included in the USA Tech Package. However, I believe that someone said HUD is included in Canadian Tech Package.

As I mentioned above, according the Hyundai Parts catalog for USA dealers, there are only two Genesis windshields for the 2015-2016 Genesis, and one says it is for the LDWS on the Tech and Ultimate Packages, and the other is for Base and Signature trims without LDWS. But the LDWS version of the windshield may also have something for HUD, even if it is not used in some locations like the USA Tech package.

The rock hit my windshield fairly close to Hillsboro TX. We were driving from Austin to Dallas. I think it was kicked up by a vehicle, but I am not 100% sure. It hit near the bottom of the windshield mostly on the black band, but a little on the glass. Initially, the damage could barely be seen from the inside of the car. I tried to get it repaired Friday night before it spread, but i could not get an appointment until Saturday morning. By Saturday morning, there was a 1' long crack in the middle of the windshield.

My factory windshield does say HUD. It is possible that there are 3 versions of the windshield at the factory, but the middle (non HUD with lane keep) is not available for replacement.

I doubt that there are 3, since in looking at the Hyundai parts catalog I only see 2. I think the HUD one is the same as the LDWS one. In some countries both HUD and LDWS are included in the Genesis sedan Technology Package, even though that is not the case in the USA (HUD requires Ultimate Package).

Often it is cheaper to make fewer different parts, which might include some features not needed, than it is to only include the exact features needed and end up with more unique parts.
