  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm in the market for a new vehicle and I've decided on a Genesis. I'm looking at either a 2012 or a 2013 but can't decide. I know there isn't much of a difference between those 2 years but just looking for insight from others with knowledge. Also I'm undecided on exterior and interior colors. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old so I'm thinking the black interior might be the way to go but still undecided on the exterior color. Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

Go with the 2013. 2012 had higher than normal problems with engines and transmissions.

Thanks for the info! Any suggestions on color combinations with exterior and interior?

I have black exterior and black interior. If I could do it again I wouldn't get black exterior as it is impossible to keep clean. I really like the dark grey, not sure what the color is called. As for the interior black looks really good! As for year, if you are looking for a 3.8, I'd go with whatever has a better deal. It's a great car with lots of power and bells and whistles. Also, the Equus have deprecated a lot, a 2012 and 2013 can be purchased for less than 30k depending on miles. Hope that helps!

Go for the '13 because you should be able to find one with longer remaining factory warranty coverage (5 year/60,000). Be advised that you won't get the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty UNLESS you get, or buy, a CPO warranty from the dealer, or some other insurance company.

I'm getting weary of one of our member's continuing knocks on the '12 models. My '12 has been outstanding. My 5/60,000 coverage ages out in 4 months, but I bought an extended warranty that extends everything till 2024. It's also transferrable to a new owner for $50. My son will get this car in a year, or two. Lucky lad.

The 2013 model year debuted a new "Ultimate Navigation" system that comes with the Technology Package. (FYI, you can tell if a Genesis has the Technology Package by looking in front of the cup holders; if there is a round dial, it has the technology package). If you get a 2012 Genesis with the Technology Package, it will come with the same navigation system and interface that the Genesis had since they started making the car back in 2009.

I just purchased a 2013 R-Spec. Prior to that, I had a 2009 Genesis 4.6 with the Technology Package. I really like the updated "Ultimate Navigation" system in the 2013. It's easier to use, has more buttons by the dial as well as on the dash surrounding the CD slot, and is overall a better system. If you want specifics, let me know and I'll list some.

One other difference: for 2013 models, Hyundai dropped the in-dash six disc CD changer for a single disc system. A 2012 would have the six disc changer.

You have V6, which has been quite reliable, but the V8 had a lot of serious problems in early 2012. Also, as original owner, your drivetrain warranty is 10 years - 100K miles. If an engine goes bad, that is about a $12K item, something that would be a catastrophic expense to most used car buyers.

What constitutes "early" 2012? I read this a lot on here and I'm not sure what the cut-off date is considered to be.

The '12 has a single disc CD player.

That's why I suggested he get a CPO warranty.

I don't think that Hyundai has ever publicly released the build date for either 2012 engine problems (V8) or 2012 transmission problems (both engines). But they have replaced (not fixed) a fair number of 2012 5.0 engines and 2012 transmissions, so it is not any easy fix. Someone may have found out the dates and posted them, but I don't recall.

My 2012 has "6 DVD Changer" printed just below the disc slot.

Okay, that means that only Tech Package models had the 6 CD changers. The Base and Premium models came with single CD players. I sit corrected.

It's not all early 2012's that have this problem, correct? I just bought one, knowing about this problem, but in trying to decide if I should opt for an extended warranty I've dug deeper on the issue and I'm starting to get nervous.

I bought the car from a certified car nut (owns a 951 that had a cover article in a motoring mag), and I have no doubt that he took great care of it and would have been aware of any oil consumption issue. He assured me there were none, other than what is normal for high performance engines when driven hard--might need a top off between oil changes.

I have the oil change record from about 20 months ago and it shows the level as Full before service. I checked the oil after about putting 400 miles on it and it's Full. The last oil change was about 1,000 miles before I bought it.

There's about 40,000 miles on the clock and 2 months left on the warranty. I'll be okay, right? Everything's fine? Can somebody give me a hug and convincingly tell me so, even if it's not?

I can't give guarantees one way or the other, but I doubt that everyone was affected. I believe that there was a problem with the rings seating properly, and maybe it depends on how owners drove their car during break-in, or even after that.

One of the members of this forum who dealt with HMA directly about his 2012 5.0L oil consumption problem was told by HMA that after his engine was replaced, he definitely would not have the same problem with the new replacement engine. That strongly suggests that Hyundai made changes to the engines at some point in the 2012 manufacturing run to deal with the high incidence of excess oil consumption.
