  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi gang. This one gets me every time I change the oil on my 2010 4.6 and I was wondering what the best practice is.

Drain the oil, fill it back up, check the dipstick, oil level says full.

Start the engine, check the dipstick, oil level reads well below 'Low'.

The owners manual says the correct level is after the car stops running for 5 minutes.

The HMAService manual says to recheck the oil level after the engine is running, and ensure it says 'Full'.

It seems impossible to do both. When should it be at 'F' for this car?

thanks for any clues!

Oil level should be checked on level ground with engine turned off for 3 or more minutes. After an oil/filter change, run engine for 2 or 3 minutes then turn engine off and wait 3 minutes or so and check the oil level.

I think they mean the engine should be started, run a short time, engine shut off, and then check the dipstick level. This allows for the oil and oil filtration system to become full of oil. If you just check the oil level after pouring the oil in the crankcase, the oil filter is still dry and you could get a misleading number.

You should never mess with a dipstick on a running engine, as there are too many moving parts down there.

Oil filter has to fill up. This why the level drops a quart.

Back when I would change my own oil, I'd pour part of a quart into the filter before screwing it in. This prevents the engine from running dry for a second or two.

I have a new 2016 3.8 sedan. I have yet to change the oil and I don't know how hard this would be; But best practice is to fill the oil filter before putting it on the engine.
This helps reduce the time the engine is running without oil; you can hear the difference in the first few seconds of start up

The Genesis as do many newer and Luxury brands uses a canister fllter and not a spin on. some canisters are mounted horizontal ( like my 4.6 V8 ) so its not possible to put oil in the filter like the spin on filters.
