  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How long should a smart key battery last?

I got a low battery warning for my smart key today. The 3v battery was reading 1v on my multimeter. I just had the car serviced. Should the battery be replaced as a matter of course at each service? I don't see it mentioned in the service plan. I doubt there is any way the techy guy could quickly check the key's function.

Mine lasted a year and a half. When I got the warning that one was dying I switched the other one thinking that would get me an extension. Nope. That one tripped a warning too. I had to replace them both the next day. Methinks the fobs and car talk too much... a price to pay for the proximity stuff. :(

Make sure you store your smart key as far away as possible from your car when parked. This will prolong the battery life of the smart key and also your car battery.

I just replaced the battery in the fob I use most. Lasted almost a year and a half, but who knows how long the battery was in the fob before I leased the car.

Your post got me to thinking. Does the fob constantly broadcast a signal, or does the car "wake it up" when you get near said auto??

Engineers call it a "handshaking routine".

And yes, I'm reasonably certain, it goes on constantly when the fob is close to the car - thus depleting both batteries.

Can you define just what is too close?

I replace mine about every 6 months, but I also keep my fob in my car in the garage at night. One less thing to have to look for in the morning.

Would the side mirrors pivoting mark a distance? If not, then going to be hard to calculate without some other electric monitoring device.

I replace mine about every 6 months,

My batteries are now over 18 months old. I have looked in the manual to find the battery type and replacement procedure but can't find anything. Can someone on the site direct me to the proper manual page or tell me the battery type and how to open the fob?

Thanks!

Found it! The fob use one CR2032 battery. The fob is not the easiest to pop open; remember to remove the "hard key" first. I am going to keep a spare batter in the glove box.

Your car will also let you know when the battery is low. I don't remember the exact notification message, but it did let me know. In addition to the console warning, it also became less capable of detection over time; I had to stand closer and closer to make it work.

:eek:how do you open the fob to change the battery
i have a 2015 genesis

FYI not much sense keeping a spare battery as they also have a time limit on them and the CR2032 is a very common battery that can be found anywhere.

Worst case scenario is the battery is completely dead. You use your key located in the fob to open the car. Now press the start button with the fob. The car will start. This is a failsafe for the inevitable. I have actually removed the battery from the fob and the car starts without one so no problem there. ;)

Thanks! I though that the fob battery had to be alive and "talk" to the car to start.

I keep a spare smart key battery in my glove box, mainly because I could only find the battery sold in a 4-pack at the store I was shopping at the day I bought them. I have the Energizer Lithium 2032.

It has a "Use Before" date on it of 03/2022 on the packaging, so I assume it will last about 8-10 years in the original packaging (not sure when I bought it).

They sell them at Ikea for $2.50 in a 12 pack. OR if you are really paranoid http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-NEW-CR20...905875?hash=item46422c3bd3:g:OHsAAOSwyQtV0S2F
